euronews inside Port Said after dozens die in riots
www.euronews.com A euronews correspondent in Egypt is in Port Said, a city that has been virtually locked down by the military after 21 death sentences sparked fatal violence there. At least 32 people died in ferocious protests that broke out after the verdicts, that were connected to a football stadium disaster last year. Our reporter Mohammed Shaikhibrahim said that. The Egyptian army controls all roads in and out of Port Said, and it is tough to get into what has been declared a military zone. Gunshots rang out through the night. Protesters were angry that people from their city were being blamed for the deadly stadium disaster in Port Said at a match last February against a visiting team from Cairo. This latest violence kept medical services busy with a steady stream of wounded. After avoiding sniper positions and crossing another military checkpoint our correspondent found local residents were shocked at the security forces' response to the street protests. "There's no doubt," said one, "the shots were fired to kill people. The goal was to eliminate anyone they came across. Another expressed anger with Cairo. "We don't want to be part of Egypt anymore," he said, "we want Port Said to be independent." Some of the fiercest clashes took place outside the prison where most of the defendants were being held. One unconfirmed report said they had been transferred by the military after protesters threatened to break in and free them. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www ...

Egypt's mystery of the Port Said snipers
www.euronews.com Local people in Port Said alerted euronews correspondent Mohammed Shaikhibrahim to the presence of a nearby sniper. There was much pointing and shouting as attention was drawn to a building further down the street, where the sound of shooting was clearly coming from. An orange ambulance did a U-turn; it was believed to be evacuating someone who had just been wounded. It was claimed that minutes beforehand, four civilians were injured by the sniper's bullets. "There are snipers," cried one man, in an agitated state. "They're killing people." Others pointed out what appeared to be spent cartridges lying on the ground. A closer look enabled a barred window in a low-rise building to be singled out. A figure could be seen peering out. He was wearing a black mask, what looked like a camouflaged vest - and appeared to be holding a gun as he scanned the street outside. The man's presence raises more questions that it answers. Who was he: police, army, some kind of militant? Our correspondent - who was taken to see more damage apparently caused by a sniper - says Egypt's military have not intervened in the violence; rather they have been protecting buildings important to the state, such as banks, government offices and power stations. By late Monday, the death toll in recent violence in Port Said rose to at least 42 dead and over 1000 wounded, according to medical sources in the city. Ahly Ultras joy at Port Said ruling التراس اهلاوي يحتفلون بالقصاص
Caution: Video contains strong language. Jan 26 - There were wild celebrations outside the Ahly Sporting Club on Saturday after a court ruled against those accused of killing over 70 Ahly fans in Port Said last February. The court handed 21 death penalties to the defendants. In the moments after the court ruling, Ahly Ultras - hardcore supporters of the club - chanted against fans of Port Said and against former defence minister Mohamed Hussain Tantawi, who they hold partially responsible for the killings.

Egypt's Port Said still simmering with anger
Egyptian opposition groups are calling for more protests against President Mohamed Morsi. It follows the country's main parties signing an agreement condemning recent violence and calling for dialogue with the government. The document is an attempt to end violent demonstrations that have killed 54 people across the country in the past week. Most of the dead were from the city of Port Said. The violence there began after 21 local football fans were sentenced to death for their involvement in Egypt's worst ever soccer riot. Calm has returned to the city, but many fear violence could return. Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel Hamid reports.

Is Egypt on the Brink of Collapse? Sharif Abdel Kouddous Reports From Restive City of Port Said
emocracyNow.org - Ongoing mass protests have led the Egyptian government to declare a state of emergency and the country's defense minister to warn of the potential "collapse of the state." We go to Democracy Now! correspondent Sharif Abdel Kouddous in the city of Port Said, where thousands have filled the streets in defiance of a nighttime curfew. "[Egyptian President Mohamed] Morsi is trying to do what Mubarak did for so many years -- trying to use the police on the streets to solve his political problems," Kouddous says. "Right now, Egypt is ungovernable." Egyptian Protesters March In Port Said
Translation of soundbite #1: PROTESTER, GERGES SHENOUDA, SAYING: "We are here today to bring justice for the martyrs because innocent people are dying. The country is ruined by the Brotherhood's rule. So we call on everyone who knows any of the victims that they come out and bring them justice." Translation of soundbite #2: PROTESTER, MOHAMED SABER, SAYING: "I am here in solidarity with the people of Port Said who were wronged by the hands of the police. I can't say that everyone in Port Said are criminals, like many have described, but I can say that the people of Port Said are decent and love their country; but the result was treachery and the death of our sons. We are here today to express how we feel; we are in mourning here in Port Said." Thousands of opponents of President Mohamed Morsi returned to the streets of Egypt on Friday (February 1), demanding his overthrow after the deadliest violence of his seven months in power. Hundreds could be seen marching through the Suez Canal city of Port Said, scene of the worst bloodshed of the past nine days, chanting and shaking their fists. Protesters chanted: "Down with the Brotherhood." Holding aloft portraits of those killed in the latest violence, they shouted: "We will not give it up to the Brotherhood!" Protests marking the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak have killed nearly 60 people since Jan. 25, prompting the head of the army to warn this week that the state was on the verge of collapse ...

The people of Port Said are rolling up their sleeves to take on the president, promising a second round of blood-letting. The people of Port Said believe they saw off the British in the 1950s and the Israelis in the 1960s. 'West feeds Egypt unrest to make govt follow its course'
Chaos is spreading in Egypt - with more deadly clashes in Port Said and Cairo. At least 32 people, including two police officers and two footballers have been killed after crowds tried to storm a prison in the seaside city. The riots followed death sentences given to 21 people for their role in last year's football stadium riot which left dozens dead. While in the capital - police fired tear gas as anti-government protesters tried to storm government buildings. Mark Glenn - a journalist for the American Free Press Newspaper - says the riots could be being instigated from the outside.
