In 1939 Aaron Copland wrote incidental music for the Irwin Shaw play Quiet City. Commissioned for the Group Theater by Harold Clurman and directed by Elia Kazan, the play closed after only two try-out performances. Copland later used some of the music for a one-movement composition, changing the original instrumentation from trumpet, clarinet, saxophone and piano to trumpet, English horn and string orchestra. The piece was premiered on January 28, 1941 by conductor David Saidenberg and his Saidenberg Little Symphony at Town Hall.
According to Copland, the piece was originally "an attempt to mirror the troubled main character of Shaw's play", and that "Quiet City seems to have become a musical entity, superseding the original reasons for its composition". Copland's biographer Vivian Perlis has said that it "reflects the introspective Copland, who liked to compose during the late night hours and enjoyed the idea of quiet streets before a city awakens for a new day".
I hope that the solitude found in so many of Edward Hopper's paintings, as well as in many of these vintage photographs of New York City, complements Copland's music for the viewer as well as it does for me.

Aaron Copland (
/ˌærən ˈkoʊplənd/; November 14, 1900 – December 2, 1990) was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music. He was instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, and is often referred to as "the Dean of American Composers". He is best known to the public for the works he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s in a deliberately more accessible style than his earlier pieces, including the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, Rodeo and his Fanfare for the Common Man. The open, slowly changing harmonies of many of his works are archetypical of what many people consider to be the sound of American music, evoking the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. However, he wrote music in different styles at different periods of his life: his early works incorporated jazz or avant-garde elements whereas his later music incorporated serial techniques. In addition to his ballets and orchestral works, he produced music in many other genres including chamber music, vocal works, opera and film scores.

William H. Bonney (born William Henry McCarty, Jr.) est. November 23, 1859 – c. July 14, 1881, better known as Billy the Kid but also known as Henry Antrim, was a 19th-century American gunman who participated in the Lincoln County War and became a frontier outlaw in the West. According to legend, he killed 21 men, but he is generally accepted to have killed between four and nine.
McCarty (or Bonney, the name he used at the height of his notoriety) was 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) to 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) tall with blue eyes, a smooth complexion, and prominent front teeth. He was said to be friendly and personable at times, and many recalled that he was as "lithe as a cat". Contemporaries described him as a "neat" dresser who favored an "unadorned Mexican sombrero". These qualities, along with his cunning and celebrated skill with firearms, contributed to his paradoxical image, as both a notorious outlaw and beloved folk hero.
Relatively unknown during most of his lifetime, Billy was catapulted into legend in 1881 when New Mexico's governor, Lew Wallace, placed a price on his head. In addition, the Las Vegas Gazette (Las Vegas, New Mexico) and the New York Sun carried stories about his exploits. Many other newspapers followed suit. After his death, several biographies were written that portrayed the Kid in varying lights.

Commissioned for the Group Theater by Harold Clurman and directed by Elia Kazan, the play closed after only two try-out performances. Copland later used some of the music for a one-movement composition, changing the original instrumentation from trumpet, clarinet, saxophone and piano to trumpet, English horn and string orchestra. The piece was premiered on January 28, 1941 by conductor David Saidenberg and his Saidenberg Little Symphony at Town Hall.
According to Copland, the piece was originally "an attempt to mirror the troubled main character of Shaw's play", and that "Quiet City seems to have become a musical entity, superseding the original reasons for its composition". Copland's biographer Vivian Perlis has said that it "reflects the introspective Copland, who liked to compose during the late night hours and enjoyed the idea of quiet streets before a city awakens for a new day".
I hope that the solitude found in so many of Edward Hopper's paintings, as well as in many of these vintage photographs of New York City, complements Copland's music for the viewer as well as it does for me.

The essential spirit of Aaron Copland’s music is embodied perhaps nowhere so well as in his ballet scores, which are among his best-known works. Copland wrote Rodeo for Agnes de Mille, and it proved to be the choreographer’s most enduring success. The scenario tells the story of a young woman, accomplished in all the skills of a cowpoke, who hopes to attract the attentions of the head wrangler on a ranch. In a decidedly pre-feminist resolution, he is unimpressed by her skill but succumbs to her charms when she trades her cowboy duds for a dress and shows a more “womanly” side at the rodeo dance.
The ballet is divided into five musical scenes; the popular concert suite derived from it into four.
- The opening “Buckaroo Holiday” incorporates two cowboy tunes, “If He Be A Buckaroo By His Trade” and “Sis Joe”; this section is marked by the use of ever-changing rhythms and unpredictable turns of harmony.
- The “Corral Nocturne,” in an asymmetrical 5/4 meter, is a plaintive portrait of a cowgirl’s loneliness.
- “Ranch House Party”, a delightful ricky-ticky bar-room piano solo follows, reputed to have been written by the young Leonard Bernstein for insertion into the ballet as a gift to his mentor. This part is omitted completely in the concert suite.
- “Saturday Night Waltz” makes use of another cowboy song, “Goodbye, Old Paint,” to which Copland adds his own stamp by the employment of cross-rhythms.
- “Hoe-Down” is undoubtedly the ballet’s best-known episode, largely through its use as the music to accompany the words “Beef: It’s What’s for Dinner” on television, and as a hit for the band ‘Emerson, Lake & Palmer’.
Written in the midst of Copland’s “populist” period, Rodeo is distinguished throughout by the composer’s exuberance, evocative sense of orchestral color, distinctive harmonic language, and singular expressiveness.
