Marc Shaiman - Patch Adams
Hunter Doherty "Patch" Adams, MD (born May 28, 1945 in Washington, DC) is an American physician, social activist, citizen diplomat and author. He founded the Gesundheit! Institute in 1971. Each year he organizes a group of volunteers from around the world to travel to various countries where they dress as clowns in an effort to bring humor to orphans, patients, and other people. His life inspired the film Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams. Adams is currently based in Arlington, Virginia. In collaboration with the institute, he promotes a different health care model (ie one not funded by insurance policies). Early life Adams had a difficult childhood. His father, an officer in the United States Army, had fought in Korea, and died while stationed in Germany when Adams was 16-years-old. After his father's death, Adams returned to the United States with his mother and brother. Upon his return, Adams has stated that he encountered institutional injustice which made him a target for bullies at school. As a result, Adams was unhappy and became actively suicidal. After being hospitalized three times in one year for wanting to end his life, he decided "you don't kill yourself; you make revolution." According to Adams, ever since this realization, he has been active with no breaks in his revolution for love, peace, and justice Early career After graduating (1963) from Wakefield High School (Arlington County, Virginia), Adams completed pre-med coursework at the George Washington ...

Smash - Original Music - Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman
SMASH, the new musical series on NBC, will be filled with original music from Tony-winners Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Watch as Smash choreographer Josh Bergasse gives you a sneak peek at what you can expect from the music in the new show starring Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Jack Davenport, Christian Borle, Anjelica Houston and more! Smash Premieres Monday February 6, 2012 at 10/9c on NBC www.nbc.com There's nothing more exciting than the opening night of a hit Broadway musical, except maybe what happens getting there. While Wicked and The Lion King pack audiences in on the Great White Way, Julia and Tom, a successful songwriting team played by Debra Messing and Christian Borle, begin work on a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. When a tenacious producer (Anjelica Houston) jumps aboard, so begins the difficult task of casting the silver screen icon. Ivy Lynn, a tough Broadway veteran, seems like the obvious choice. But enter Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee), a young girl from Iowa with a dream of making it on Broadway who walks in and blows everyone away. So who will get the part and begin a journey that will change their lives? It's an age-old story, but a star just might be born once again. While everyone is consumed with putting the show together, real life has a tendency of getting in the way. Julia and her husband are in the middle of a complicated adoption; the producer's husband begins divorce proceedings which could threaten ...

CITY SLICKERS (1991) - Marc Shaiman - Soundtrack Score Suite
The original City Slickers film was a curious comedy which placed Billy Crystal, among others as city executives who wanted to get away from it all and go on a cattle drive. Obviously, things don't go quite as planned and so they have adventures, find their true selves, blah, blah, blah... although the main point of the film was to be a comedy western. I don't recall whether it was any good or not, but they made a sequel so it must have been moderately successful. It is curious that Bruce Broughton got type cast as the only young(ish) composer who can write Western music since Marc Shaiman's hilariously over the top music for both City Slickers films is delightful and if he was given a serious Western to write music for, I think he'd be more than up to the task. The main title for City Slickers must go down as one of the more ludicrous overtures commited to celluloid, the main theme going through a series of variations and bouncing along at a break neck pace after which the orhcestra must have required oxygen. Perhaps the comic high point would be where there's a gunshot and everything stops. The remainder of the disc goes through various episodes, Career End being a curious jazz number which doesn't seem to have anything at all to do with the Western genre at all, quite nice though. It is the law (I think) that all American comedy films must be sentimental to the hilt and so no Marc Shaiman comedy score is complete without a mushy episode and this is provided in Find ...

ADDAMS FAMILY Values Soundtrack Score Suite (Marc Shaiman)
This is a fun little suite that I decided to do with Marc Shaiman's score to Addams Family Values. It wasn't a particular favorite film of mine but the score is another story. I didn't have the time nor resources to make a decent slideshow so I opted to use the official album cover. With that being said, I do not own any rights to this work nor claim to. All the credit goes to composer Mark Shaiman and record label Varese Sarabande for their fantastic collaboration. Since this album is now out of print hopefully a record label will pick up the rights and release an expanded or complete score. I hope you all enjoy! 1993 - Original Motion Picture Score Composed by Marc Shaiman Mixed, Edited & Arranged by CAP88

Marc Shaiman - CITY SLICKERS II: THE LEGEND OF CURLYS GOLD (1994) - Soundtrack Suite
This is one of my very first score suites from way back in 2009. So please excuse the "transitions". ;-) When the first City Slickers film stormed into theatres in 1991, it unexpectedly earned massive returns for Columbia. And when Jack Palance infamously followed his Oscar win for his role in the film with some manly one-armed pushups and alluded to his knowledge of the ladies while on stage, the studio was inevitably headed towards sequel territory. With mostly the same cast, City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold throws Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Palance back in the saddle and this time on a quest for hidden gold. Like the first film, the sequel has its more serious moments of bonding and identity crisis, and in the somewhat mishandled balance between these moments and the action scenes, most of the humor was missed by critics and audiences. The screenplay for City Slickers II is far more cliched than that of the first film, and it's no surprise therefore that Marc Shaiman tips his hat some famous Western film music in his sequel score. When he scored City Slickers in 1991, he was fresh on the scene, with only a feature project or two under his belt. His Western parody score pushed all the right buttons, however, and showed his talents for writing in several genres of music that were humorously incorporated throughout the film (and most of which previewed in the rowdy title sequence). The problems that the original City Slickers score suffered from were ...

A Few Good Men Soundtrack: Honor - Marc Shaiman
From the 1992 movie: A Few Good Men (directed by Rob Reiner), this is the track: "Honor"; composed by 5-time Oscar Nominee Marc Shaiman. In my humble opinion this composition rates among one of the best closing music compositions around, and completes an excellent film. Addams Family Waltz (comp. by Marc Shaiman) (Advanced Piano Solo V.) (RARE!)
FINALLY! Here's my first video with my new webcam and a modified piano sound (used some EQ and Reverb and WOW..it works!) It's a pretty difficult tune from the Addams Family movie. Composed by Marc Shaiman. (Notice: It seems to be that the audio is not exactly synchron to the video, but as you can see at the bass notes it is. It's just a problem of the frame rate (is too low)) The sheet music I used here you can find in this book: Movie Songs of the 90s, Vol.2 (ed. by Carol Cuellar), publ. by CPP/Belwin, 1993 (not available currently, but I found this Amazon link): www.amazon.com

Marc Shaiman - City Slickers II The Legend Of Curly's Gold
A sly but affectionate homage to the classic Western scores of Ennio Morricone and Elmer Bernstein, City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curly's Gold captures Marc Shaiman at his most delightful. Each theme bursts with energy and invention, whether dizzily comedic or intimately romantic in its orientation. Shaiman keeps each theme short and to-the-point, never allowing a gag to overstay its welcome. To its credit, the music is only a few tweaks away from the sweeping Western scores it satirizes, so authentic are its French horn flourishes, harmonica squawks and campfire guitar melodies.
