euronews focus - Venezuela reaches for new tourism heights
www.euronews.com The highest peaks in Venezuela are at the centre of an ambitious re-building programme. As part of an effort to reconstruct the country's tourism industry it will build the Mérida cable car, which is the longest and highest in the world. Construction at almost five kilometres up in the northern Andes on Pico Espejo takes nerve and precise planning. Four hundred and fifty engineers work around the clock, battling severe weather conditions and the altitude. Being in a National Park the project has to be sensitive to the environment, recycling materials and limiting the extent of the works' effects on the surrounding area. The cable car has to lift its own building materials - up to 2000 tonnes per trip. The Venezuelan government is putting 246-million euros into the project. The tourism development coordinator for the Mérida cable car, Jaime Bautista told euronews: "Beyond the economic investment, beyond the technological achievement, this cable car aims to create environmental awareness, stimulate visitors to know nature and to enjoy high mountain activities." The Merida region is a favorite destination for Venezuelans. Tired of tropical temperatures, it is something of an exotic novelty to spend time in the Páramo heights having to wear gloves and woolly hats for a few days. The new cable car, due to open at the end of 2013 should attract international visitors to Mérida too. Venezuela's socialist Government has recently approved a new tourism law, aiming ...

Le Tourist Trophy, les jeux du cirque ? ( video contenu officiel moto journal )

euronews focus - Taking the pulse of medical tourism in of South Korea
www.euronews.com South Korea has been making a huge effort over the past few years to develop medical tourism as one of its new growth industries. To make life easier for foreign visitors, information centres have been set up to offer advice and guidance to a growing number of foreign patients (mainly from Japan, China and Russia), who come to South Korea in search of all manner of medicinal marvels. "We help about 60 foreign patients per day, which means that there were more than 12000 in our first year of business. They ask for very diverse treatments, from cosmetic surgery to traditional medicine," explains Ki Rip Park, from a Medical Tourism Information Centre in Busan. In Seoul, business at the Jaseng Hospital of Eastern Medicine is booming. It specialises in non-surgical spine treatments and has an international clinic to accommodate its foreign patients, with translators on hand to help out. Naoko, from Japan, suffers from severe back pain and has become a regular here. She gets Chuna therapy, as well as a mixture of electric stimulation acupuncture and herbal medication. Naoko Kawaragi, a medical tourist told euronews: "Sometimes I cannot walk, I cannot stand, I cannot stretch. I started coming here two years ago. Now I come here every three months and I stay for three days. Before I couldn't even walk." Treatments combine old and new - East and West - a medical fusion that allows new treatments to develop, attracting an increasing number of Westerners along the ...

"VOGUE BOY": ME AT NINE, PERFORMING TO MADONNA IN SUMMER '91!
http://robertjeffrey.blogspot.com
www.facebook.com/robertjeffreypage
I performed to MADONNA's "VOGUE" in the Summer of 1991 when my parents took me to Hampton Beach Casino in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. A business in the casino at the time gave tourists the chance to lip-synch to their favorite pop songs in front of a blue screen background, and I was lucky enough to partake that summer.
In honor of the twentieth anniversary of MADONNA's "TRUTH OR DARE" and in celebration of MADONNA's upcoming "W.E.", here is my nine year old self paying tribute to the woman who changed my life and continues to inspire me just as much today as twenty years ago.

The Bridge
The Vision:
Back in October of 2009, I set out to make a film that would push my talents as both a storyteller and a filmmaker. I wanted to create a film that would challenge myself and my audience, meshing both classical and experimental storytelling techniques from music, books, & films that have inspired me in one way or another. I wanted to make a film that didn’t do any spoon-feeding, where my audience would leave with questions as well as answers. It was a long a difficult road to get to this point and there were days where I felt that I was in way over my head but eight months later, I can proudly say I’ve finally completed my film “The Bridge” and it was an experience I would never forget.
The Inspiration:
The story of The Bridge was a story a cousin had told me when I was eight years old. It was a ghost story about two siblings on a bridge. I remember it haunting me for weeks and causing many sleepless nights under my sheets. Obviously, it had a lasting influence in my life. It had always been one of those stories that I wanted to adapt into a short film so when the opportunity finally came one day, I decided to pull to trigger.
When I was in film school, I would constantly fantasize about making some sort of epic period piece, especially one that took place during WW2. So when I decided I was going to make The Bridge, I instantly followed it up with “hell, why not make it into a WW2 movie”? I could have easily made this film as a contemporary piece but where would the fun be in that? I never do things because it’s easy; I do it because it’s hard. I love a challenge. I figured I could keep the same characters, themes, motifs, style, and wrap it around a WW2 setting. So I did.
Pre-production:
So it began. After a quick outline, I started writing the screenplay and, being a one-man crew at the time, I also started doing work on costumes and props. I lived and breathed WW2 24/7. I watched every WW2 movie and documentary I could get my hands on. I even got my hands some real WW2 letters to get a grasp on the era’s language. I felt like a student again and I loved it. I scoured eBay for every WW2 field gear I could afford to buy and the stuff I couldn’t get, I had them custom made cheaply in China. I wanted it to be detailed and authentic as possible while keeping my almost non-existing budget down. I remember coming home one day and having almost a couple dozen eBay packages on front door. It looked like the front door of the post office.
Casting:
The casting of The Bridge was actually one of the smoothest aspects of the entire process. I first went to my good friend Amy and asked her if she would like to help me produce the film. Having worked with each other before, I didn’t really have to ask twice. She was happy to be my first recruit.
For the leading role, I asked my good friend Pablo Soriano to take the part. Having worked with him before, we have a good understanding of each other. He is just a naturally gifted actor and he makes my job as a director so much easier. Plus, his puppy dog eyes make him a perfect protagonist.
For the leading female role, I went looking for a girl who had beautiful, almost hypnotic eyes. That’s when I spotted Leah in one my good friend’s music video. I called up Carlos and basically told him, “I need to have that girl for movie”. A few days later, she was on board.
I owe the discovery of Mike, the character who plays James Connolly, to my producer Amy. She had read the script and recommended him. I remember her telling me “Mike IS James”. Words that any director would love to hear and as usual, Amy was right.
So a couple months later, the script was complete, the costumes and props were ready, and the cast was cast. We were ready to shoot!
Production:
With our extremely limited budget, I knew right from day one that we were going to shoot “The Bridge” on DSLRs, specifically the Canon 7D and 5D Mark II. With this in mind, I knew (as also the DP of the film), I was going to push these cameras to its limits. I wasn’t going to let my equipment limit my vision of the film. I knew at the very beginning that I may or may not have a crappy movie in the end but hell, it’s gonna look damn good! We all know about the camera’s limitations but I wasn’t going to bitch and moan about it, I was going to work around it. I took it as a personal challenge to make these cameras work and I did.
About 75% of the film was shot with the 7D and the rest with the 5DM2. The main reason I shot with the 7D more was the 24p firmware update wasn’t available for the 5DM2 during the bulk of the shooting. I prefer the 5DM2’s full frame sensor the 7D cropped sensor.
Production, like any other shoot, had its ups and downs. Ours was mainly San Francisco’s unpredictable weather. You can blink and the bay area can go from miserable foggy weather (which is what I wanted for the film) to perfect summer beach party weather.

Be Your Own Souvenir!
_This proposal aims to connect street users, arts and science, linking them to under-laying spaces and their own realities. The installation was enjoyed during two weekends in January 2011 by the tourists, neighbours of La Rambla and citizens of Barcelona, a city that faces a trade-off between identity and gentrification, economic sustainability and economic growth.
_This shapes through a technological ritual where the audience is released from established roles in a perspective exchange: spectator-performer, artist-tourist, observer-object.
_The user becomes the producer as well as the consumer through a system that invites him/her to perform as a human statue, with a free personal souvenir as a reward: a small figure of him/herself printed three-dimensionally from a volumetric reconstruction of the person generated by the use of three structured light scanners (kinect).
_The project mimics the informal artistic context of this popular street, human sculptures and craftsmen, bringing diverse realities and enabling greater empathy between the agents that cohabit in the public space.
_Dataflow
All the software used in this project is free and open. Custom software has been developed using openFrameworks and openKinect in order to produce a tunable full 360 degree point cloud. Using a midi controller, the three differents input pointclouds (3 Kinects) can be adjusted in space and resolution. The resulting combined point cloud is processed by Meshlab to produce a mesh reconstruction. Skeinforge takes the mesh, previously cleaned up through Blender, and outputs a gcode file, which can feed a cnc machine (Rapman 3.1).
_Special thanks to
Ramon Parramon for mentoring the project with wise ideas

mongolia!
this summer we got an amazing opportunity to go on a ten-day motorcycle trip across the scarcely populated steppes of mongolia and live their nomadic life.
while researching mongolia prior to our trip, we found out that most of the native mongolians love having photographs taken of themselves. although mongolia's capital, ulaanbaatar, is fairly urbanized, modern technology is not as commonly seen in the countryside. many of the families we met had very few or no pictures as a family together. most opportunities to have a printed photo of themselves either came from tourists or from visiting the city. also, most young people (we met a boy Vanessa's age, 17, who didn't have a printed photo of himself) have never had a photo to keep of themselves. we decided to bring a bunch of polaroid film along on our motorcycles so each local we met along the way could have a picture to keep of him or herself!
when we asked one family if we could take a picture of them, we were kind of scared of bothering or distracting them from their daily duties. we didn't see the family for the next ten minutes so we assumed they didn't want a picture. finally, the family (the first family seen in the video) came out of their yurt dressed in traditional celebratory clothing! we were so honored to be able to capture a moment of them together.
people huddled around us just to have their photo taken and once they got one, they'd return to their yurt, but eventually return with other friends or family members who also wanted a polaroid.
each person photographed really prized and protected his or her polaroid (fearing that we wanted to keep it), and barely let us see it when it was developed! the children automatically stored it away once we showed them it. it was a really great experience and showed us how much just one photograph can mean to people. although many people claim they want to escape this mess of technology in more delevoped countries, we often tend to take the beauty of some technology, such as photography, for granted.
anyways, this video is the reactions of just a few people we photographed...enjoy! :D
the song is "janglin' (itunes session)" by edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros
(UPDATE: through articles and this description, there have been several misunderstandings.. we're sorry for any misunderstandings and we hope we cleared it up! we made this video originally just for ourselves, our friends, and our family. we never imagined it would get this many views, although we're very grateful for them, so our description might not have been perfect.. we don't want to blame any articles either, because our original description for our intended few viewers was a bit ambiguous. we hope you can please ignore any misconceptions and enjoy the profound delight these people received from the magic of photography! :) their nomadic lifestyle is very beautiful, but just different to ours. our trip to mongolia was a very unique and special experience, which we hope to share with as many people as we can.)
