The 67th annual Venice Film Festival held in Venice, Italy, took place from September 1 to September 11, 2010. American film director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino was head of the Jury. John Woo was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement prior to the start of the Festival. The opening film was Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. The Golden Lion for the best picture In Competition was awarded to Somewhere, directed by Sofia Coppola. The Silver Lion award for best director was given to Álex de la Iglesia, for A Sad Trumpet Ballad. In a break with tradition of limiting a film to receiving no more than one major award, the Special Jury Prize and the Best Actor (the Volpi Cup) went to the same film, Jerzy Skolimowski's Essential Killing. In the past, no one film had been given two major awards, and Tarantino was forced to appeal to Festival head Marco Müller to alter the rules. This rule change will be upheld for future editions of the Festival. My Own Private Idaho is a 1991 independent drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant, loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V, and starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. The story follows two friends, Mike and Scott, as they embark on a journey of personal discovery that takes them to Mike's hometown in Idaho and then to Italy in search of Mike's mother. Van Sant originally wrote the screenplay in the 1970s, but discarded it after reading John Rechy's 1963 novel, City of Night, and concluding that Rechy's treatment of the subject of street hustlers was better than his own. Over the years, Van Sant rewrote the script, which comprised two stories: that of Mike and the search for his mother, and Scott's story as a modern update of the Henry IV plays. Van Sant had difficulty getting Hollywood financing, and at one point considered making the film on a minuscule budget with a cast of actual street kids. He sent copies of his script to Reeves and to Phoenix, assuming that they would turn it down, but both agreed to star in the film. My Own Private Idaho had its premiere at the 1991 Venice Film Festival, and received largely positive reviews, from critics including Roger Ebert and those of The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly. Fifteen minutes into second practice, Alexis Rainsford and Saar driver Tony Durbin did not take long to collide with each other. After Rainsford had been holding Durbin up for several corners, Durbin attempted a pass through the Dwyer S and made contact with Alexis Rainsford, sending her into the tire wall. Rainsford went to a backup car, which infuriated team owner Cyril Volpi, who believed the primary car was three tenths of a second over the rest of the field. Durbin insisted Rainsford was driving too slow through the other parts of the course. "Only that dumb b**** blocks you during practice and intentionally runs three, four seconds off your pace to spite you." Durbin said to the press. "I made a move and I guess I took her by surprise and she didn't realize blocking doesn't work when you're side by side. I don't appreciate someone running into my door."
