Albert J. "Budd" Johnson (December 14, 1910 – October 20, 1984) was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist who worked extensively with, among others, Ben Webster, Benny Goodman, Big Joe Turner, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday and, especially, Earl Hines.
Budd Johnson initially played drums and piano before switching to tenor saxophone. In the 1920s he performed in Texas and parts of the Midwest, working with Jesse Stone among others. Johnson had his recording debut while working with Louis Armstrong's band in 1932-33 but he is more known for his work, over many years, with Earl Hines. It is contended that he and Billy Eckstine, Hines' long-term collaborator, led Hines to hire "modernists" in the birth of bebop, which came largely out of the Hines band. Johnson was also an early figure in the bebop era, doing sessions with Coleman Hawkins in 1944. In the 1950s he led his own group and did session work for Atlantic Records - he is the featured tenor saxophone soloist on Ruth Brown's hit "Teardrops from My Eyes". In the mid-1960s he began working and recording again with Hines. His association with Hines is his longest lasting and most significant. In 1975 he began working with the New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1993. His grandson, Albert Johnson (aka Prodigy), is a member of the hip-hop duo Mobb Deep.
Johnson is a surname of English origin. The name itself is a patronym of the given name John, literally meaning "son of John". The name John derives from Latin Johannes, which is derived through Greek Ἰωάννης Iōannēs from Hebrew יוחנן Yohanan, meaning "Yahweh has favoured". The name has been extremely popular in Europe since the Christian era as a result of it being given to St John the Baptist, St John the Evangelist and nearly one thousand other Christian saints. Johnson is the ninth most common surname in Sweden/Scandinavia, second most common in the United States and 154th most common in the world.
Earl Kenneth Hines, universally known as Earl "Fatha"Hines (December 28, 1903 – April 22, 1983), was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one major source, is "one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz".
Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, a member of the Earl Hines big-band along with Charlie Parker, wrote, "The piano is the basis of modern harmony. This little guy came out of Chicago, Earl Hines. He changed the style of the piano. You can find the roots of Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, all the guys who came after that. If it hadn't been for Earl Hines blazing the path for the next generation to come, it's no telling where or how they would be playing now. There were individual variations but the style of ... the modern piano came from Earl Hines."
Pianist Lennie Tristano said, "Earl Hines is the only one of us capable of creating real jazz and real swing when playing all alone." Horace Silver said, "He has a completely unique style. No one can get that sound, no other pianist".Erroll Garner said, "When you talk about greatness, you talk about Art Tatum and Earl Hines".
The Darcys are a Canadian two-piece art rock band from Toronto, Ontario.
They released their debut album, Endless Water, in 2007. Subsequently the band signed a three-album deal with the record label Arts & Crafts. The third of those, 2013's Warring, was nominated for a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and was a longlist nominee for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize.
The Darcys, who obtained their name from Jane Austen’s English-lit classic Pride and Prejudice, first began as the two-piece project of Jason Couse and Wes Marskell in Etobicoke, Ontario which gradually transitioned into a full band in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the additions of Dave Hurlow and Kirby Best. In December of 2007, The Darcys’ debut album, Endless Water, was released. In the years following, the group returned to Toronto, and Michael le Riche was added to the lineup.

"Sweet Home Chicago" is a popular blues standard in the twelve bar form. It was first recorded and is credited to have been written by Robert Johnson. Over the years the song has become one of the most popular anthems for the city of Chicago despite ambiguity in Johnson's original lyrics.

Brian Eno is a man of many talents - he's known for his days in Roxy music and for working with David Bowie. He's produced many at the top of the musical industry and is also recognised as the architect of "ambient music". This week is a busy one for him. He has an album out and an art show with light and sound installations. Krishnan Guru-Murthy went to meet him.
Elke Sommer is interviewed at her Beverly Hills home in this rare half-hour appearance with cable TV host Skip E Lowe.
In this week’s show, Eric Worre sits down with Network Marketing Professional and Leader, Babette Teno. Like many people, Babette was attracted to network marketing for the freedom, unlimited earning potential, and what she is most passionate about: helping people. Helping people with their health and helping them achieve financial freedom. Babette is a nutritionist by education, but started seeking financial independence in 1990, when her father passed away after being misdiagnosed. She promised her father that she would help as many people as possible. After her father died, she found out that there wasn’t enough money to pay for his funeral. Her mother had thought there was enough money, but had never asked her husband, so her and Babette had to sell things just to pay for his funera...

Description: The Jazz Icons: Quincy Jones DVD, released Sept. 26, 2006, spotlights a young "Q" conducting his "dream band"—an 18-piece orchestra of world-renowned players such as Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab, Budd Johnson and Benny Bailey. This 80-minute program, featuring 17 songs, is one of the finest examples of big band jazz ever to be captured on film. Shot in Switzerland and Belgium in 1960, these two concerts are the only known visual documents of this legendary tour—an important lost chapter in an illustrious career which has spanned six decades. Tracklist: Live in Belgium '60 01. Birth Of A Band 02. Moanin’ 03. Lester Leaps In 04. The Gypsy 05. Tickle Toe 06. Everybody’s Blues 07. Big Red Live in Switzerland '60 08. Birth Of A Band 09.
