Meet Chico, my Labrador with Centronuclear Myopathy
This is Chico, also known as Chief. Chico is a Labrador Retriever, and at first glance he looks like the picture-perfect example of the breed. Isnt he so handsome?? But unfortunately Chico is affected by a genetic disorder in purebred Labs called centronuclear myopathy (CNM). CNM has gone by many names since its appearance in the 1970s, most commonly Muscular Myopathy of the Labrador, but also muscular dystrophy, myotonia, generalized muscle weakness, polyneuropathy, and hereditary myopathy. Generally, dogs with CNM seem normal as young pups, but may grow slower and be lazier than the other pups in the litter. Around 3-5 months of age, the dog will start to show definite signs of the disease. The symptoms are bunny-hopping, walking differently, stumbling and falling often, and in the worst cases, inability to hold up their head. They also have difficulty swallowing, and sometimes inhale or choke on their food. The symptoms never go away or get better. Luckily Chicos case in particular is fairly mild, but if you look closely you can see how it has affected him. In these pictures, you can see that he doesnt lie on his back legs, but rather with them sprawled off to one side. You can clearly see that he is missing a lot of muscle mass in his back legs. Its also pronounced in his chest, as you can see in these pictures. With centronuclear myopathy the skeletal muscle fibers dont develop properly. Since the missing muscle fibers will never develop, you cant just beef up a dog ...

Lab with CNM (centronuclear myopathy) plays (RAWR!) in the snow, Part 2, starring Noodle
Noodle, a rescued purebred yellow Labrador retriever with centronuclear myopathy (CNM), romps around the ranch after a snowstorm. This debilitating congenital defect causes extreme muscle weakness and fatigue. Accompanying defects include hip and knee dysplasia, which Noodle has, and megaesophagus, which we've minimized thus far. As you can see from his activity, a dog with this condition can make a great pet to a supportive caretaker. Noodle has come a long way. As a puppy, he couldn't hold his head up, control his tongue, hold a tug toy, walk for more than a few feet without having to crawl, or climb stairs. Noodle is the product of bad breeders in Soap Lake, WA. Ethical breeders perform inexpensive (seriously--it's super cheap and easy) genetic testing on prospective sires and dames and prevent any carriers of this double-recessive trait from ever generating new puppies. Any dog that's a carrier should be altered, but unethical, lazy, and greedy breeders (such as backyard breeders and puppy mills) will simply give buyers a new pup if one from a litter is returned, and then kill or dump the defective pup. Are you considering adding a Labrador retriever to your own pack? Shelters are full of young Labs and Lab mixes. Please consider adoption or rescue. If you want to purchase a purebred puppy, please do your research ahead of time. Puppy mills and backyard breeders are the reasons that tragic health defects like CNM persist today. Thank you, and have a Doodle-y day!

Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy and the Effects on the Performance Horse.m4v
A multimedia project for the 2011 Student Bio Expo by Emma Sparrow. Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy is genetic tendency that makes it hard or impossible for the animal to digest grains or sugar properly and leads to damage to the muscle tissue during physical exertion. EPSM is most commonly associated with draft horses while PPSM is commonly associated with Quarter horses or paints. In a normal horse, glycogen is the energy source used for muscle contraction. An EPSM horse cannot complete this process, resulting in excess stored glycogen which affects the horse physically.

German Shepherd with Aggravated Fibrotic Myopathy in hind leg
Our GSD was diagnosed with Fibrotic Myopathy about a year ago, which she typically does not have any issues with, however yesterday we went on a long walk and her left hind paw has been causing her a lot of discomfort since this morning. We're unsure if it has to do with the FM injury that causes her left hind leg to drag a tiny bit. I wanted to get this online for others to see.

Muscles between the ribs and those of the diaphragm, which moves up and down to allow inhalation and exhalation of air, also can be weakened." "symptoms also can begin in children past infancy but not yet adolescents. Generally, the earlier MMD begins, the more severe the disease symptoms." "Delayed muscle relaxation after contraction Impaired nourishment of nonmuscular tissue Weaknesses in the facial muscles, arms and legs, and muscles affecting speech and swallowing Baldness in men and women Intellectual impairment Respiratory problems Heart abnormalities in early adulthood Although Duchenne MD is present at birth, signs and symptoms do not usually appear until the child is 3 - 5 years of age. They include: Delayed motor movements Frequent falls Difficulty running, jumping, and getting up from a sitting or lying down position Large calf muscles Weakness in the lower extremities Cognitive impairment Cardiac impairment Breathing difficulties and a chronic disorder of heart muscles develop during adolescence, usually after the individual becomes wheelchair bound."
