Sea Gypsies Losing Out - Philippines
July 1994 - In the waters around the Philippines nomadic fisherfolk anchor their houseboats close together at night - some small protection against the pirates who rule the Sulu Sea. Life on the ocean spells fear, violence and hunger for the Philippines Sea Gypsies - the Badjao. They are caught between discrimination on the mainland and hardship at sea. Adding to their problems, dynamite and trawler fishing have devastated life on the coral reefs around the Philippines. Many Badjao can hardly catch enough fish to make a meal or buy diesel for their boats. This minority's culture and even existence hangs in the balance.

Islands in the Philippine Sea at Night
For High Resolution version, visit our video page: eol.jsc.nasa.gov This video was taken by the crew of Expedition 29 on board the International Space Station. The sequence of shots was taken October 20, 2011 from 17:48:40 to 18:05:17 GMT, on a descending pass from eastern China to western New Guinea, and rounds out to an ascending pass just as the video ends north of Australia. As the pass begins southeastward towards the South China Sea, the first noticably-lit area is that of Hong Kong and Macau. The island of Taiwan can also be easily seen left of track. The ISS passes over the South China Sea towards the Philippines, which have some cloud cover and storms. Finally, the pass ends just north of Australia, where the Yorke Peninsula can be seen as a dark, rusty color protruding into the water.

Pass over Eastern Asia to Philippine Sea and Guam
This pass begins over Mongolia, looking towards the Pacific Ocean, China, and Japan. As the video progresses, you can see major cities along the coast and the Japanese islands on the Philippine Sea. The island of Guam can be seen further down the pass into the Philippine Sea, and the pass ends just to the east of New Zealand. A lightning storm can be seen as light pulses near the end of the video.

Philippine sea gypsies' way of life under threat - 13 Dec 08
The traditional way of life of Philippine sea gypsies, known locally as the Badjao, is facing a new threat. Having already fled separatist conflict in the south, many are now confronting eviction from their homes, to make way for new waterfront housing. Supporters of the development say the move will help the sea gypsies, while opponents say it's just an excuse for developers to make a profit. Marga Ortigas reports from Puerto Princesa.

China Focus - Loida Lewis on the Philippines and the South China Sea
China Focus has moved to a new channel, Be sure to subscribe to www.youtube.com The Spratly Islands and the Scarborough Shoal have been subject of big disputes between China, the Philippines, and other southeast Asian nations. Whoever controls the South China Sea—or the "West Philippine Sea" as Manila is now calling it—controls key shipping lanes as well as offshore oil and natural gas deposits. Last month, the conflict escalated when the Chinese navy sent a garrison to the Scarborough Shoal. Joining host Shelley Zhang on China Focus to discuss the issue is a woman who The Philippine Daily Inquirer called "China's Newest Public Enemy Number One" for her role in calling for a boycott of made-in-China goods: Loida Nicolas-Lewis, the national chair of US Pinoys for Good Governance.

Sulpicio Lines Tragedy 2008 - Philippine Sea Tragedy
Song: The Lord Bless You ang Keep You by: The Philippine Madrigal Singers MANILA, Philippines - A total of 70 bodies of passengers and crewmembers of the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars have been retrieved so far, an official from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Tuesday night. Lt. Cdr. Rogelio Villanueva, a Coast Guard representative, said three of the bodies were recovered by divers who entered the wreckage of the ship Tuesday morning. MV Princess of the Stars, owned by Sulpicio Lines, capsized off the coast of Sibuyan Island in Romblon due to strong waves brought by Typhoon "Frank." The ship was carrying 849 passengers and crew when it capsized. Villanueva said eight of the bodies were recovered from San Fernando town in Romblon, four from Mulanay town in Quezon, and 55 from the town of Claveria town in Masbate. Forty-eight survivors were accounted so far, Villanueva said. Villanueva also clarified that the 15 bodies retrieved last Monday from Burias Island, also in Masbate, were not from MV Princess of the Stars as they earlier reported. Villanueva said they might have come from eight ships and bancas which also encountered maritime accidents at the height of the Typhoon "Frank" last weekend. The official said at least 30 divers were sent to the vicinity of the ship Tuesday, with more to be added in the coming days. Rescue and retrieval operations, however, were temporarily halted Tuesday night due to poor illumination inside the ship. Villanueva said the ...

Spain is ready to support the modernization efforts of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and is willing to provide equipment to boost the military's capabilities. Earth
Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them.
HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

TIMELAPSE: Chase the Clouds
They say that in every man’s heart is the desire to go higher. This might be the highest that I could ever ascend in this lifetime. 2,922 meters above sea level, just over 30 meters short of Mt. Apo (Philippines). Here, I took myself to a new adventure of chasing light above clouds.
Watch and experience Mt. Pulag’s Microclimate presented in timelapse. Take notice of radical changes in light and colors happening in very short periods of time. Don’t miss the spectacular sunrise above clouds.

Philippine Coast Guard Get 10 Bizan Class Patrol Ships From Japan To Protect West Philippine Sea
Japan is ready to provide about 10 units of 40-meter Bizan Class patrol ships to the Philippine Coast Guard to beef up its maritime security capabilities, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin confirmed Friday. "What I know is that they [Japan] offered assistance. I'm just not sure if it will be pursued," Gazmin told radio station dzRH. When asked how many ships may be provided by Japan, Gazmin said: "Mga sampu." The defense chief refused to elaborate, saying details should come from the Coast Guard. Coast Guard commandant Vice Adm. Edmund Tan, said the 10 patrol ships would be provided through a loan. "They will not be given for free," Tan said. Tan also did not elaborate. "It depends on the process of our papers. It is still for approval of the NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority). There are still meetings to be conducted," he said. Previous reports said Japan has agreed to provide ships to the Philippines this year. The Japanese Embassy, however, has yet to confirm these reports. Gazmin's statement came amid tensions between the Philippines and China owing to the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal standoff. The Panatag Shoal standoff started on April 10 when two Chinese surveillance vessels barred the Philippine Navy from arresting Chinese fishermen who had poached maritime species from the area. Unlike China, which has been boosting its military and maritime capabilities, the Philippines lacks naval assets and has a weak maritime security capability.
