Defiant Assad Vows To Fight On Syrian President Bashar al Assad accuses foreign powers of interfering in the conflct in his first public speech for seven months. Syria's president has blamed Islamic extremists and "outside forces" for orchestrating the conflict in his country in a rare public address to the nation. The embattled leader, who appeared before cheering crowds at an opera house in the capital Damascus, struck a defiant tone and was frequently interrupted by supporters chanting: "With our soul with our blood we sacrifice ourselves for you O Bashar." With insurgents fighting their way closer to the seat of his power, President Bashar al Assad spoke about the latest developments and "suffering" in Syria. He said the conflict was not between the state and opposition, but the "nation and its enemies". "We are now in a state of war in every sense of the word," he said. "This war targets Syria using a handful of Syrians and many foreigners. Thus, this is a war to defend the nation." thefilmarchive.org February 22, 2012 The Siege of Homs is a military operation being conducted by the Syrian military in the city of Homs, the third most populated city of Syria, located 100 km north of Damascus and sometimes called the "Capital of the Revolution" by the opposition. The fighting initially started as a crackdown against pro-democracy protestors, as described by the opposition, and what the government has referred to as an operation against "armed terrorist groups". The situation evolved into prolonged street fighting between the security forces and the newly formed Free Syrian Army which gained ground and the control of several quarters of the city. In late December 2011, an Arab mission was sent to monitor the situation following the Arab League plan. Following the abortive mission, which was ridiculed by Assad, and Russian and Chinese vetos at the UN, the Syrian Army launched an offensive against the district of Baba Amr. Though Baba Amr had no heavy weapons, artillery was used in the assault. In late February 2012, journalist Marie Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik were killed. It is believed possible they were targeted as their deaths removed the last independent witnesses as the army closed in. The Syrian army launched a large-scale offensive on Baba Amr, shelling the entire district and blocking all supply routes, which forced all civilians and FSA to evacuate from Baba Amr. UNITED NATIONS - Kofi Annan, the UN Arab League envoy for Syria, said Thursday that he will step down from his post at the end of the month, departing with a stinging criticism of the international community and warring parties for not stopping the violence in the war-torn country. Annan's resignation deals a decisive blow to the already faltering international efforts to find a diplomatic solution to a crisis that has left more than 14000 dead and pitched the country into deepening civil war. The announcement came as Syria braced for a major armed clash between the government and rebels in the contested city of Aleppo, UN officials said.
