26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Leogang 4X/ DHI - Round 5
Aaron Gwin (USA) just crossed the finish line after he had secured the last starting position with the best time in the qualifying and now the winners of the men's and women's DH race at the UCI World Cup stop in Leogang are set. None of the men was able to get close to Gwin's time (USA/3:44.181) and Floriane Pugin (FRA/4:29.427) finished with a comfortable lead ahead of her competitors. Cheered on by the spectators that had flocked to Saalfelden Leogang despite the changing weather, the athletes showed an absolutely spectacular race. About 13.000 mountain bike fans had come to Leogang on this long World Cup Weekend to attend this international biking highlight. _ The DH course in Leogang is famous for its technical sections that demand a great deal of concentration and skill of the riders. Especially the last passage with its roots made slippery from the rain posed quite a challenge for the riders. The track that measures 2.600 meters and stretches over 830 altitude meters, was a lot faster than last year, even though the mud did its part to slow the riders down. The Sunday afternoon was rung in by the ladies' DH finals. Even though the race itself took place in dry weather, the course was soft from the rain that had come down in buckets and especially the root section posed quite a challenge for many of the ladies, as well as the following men's race. Floriane Pugin (FRA) delivered a truly impressive run and overtook with her time of 4:29.427 the two British ladies ...

26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Mont-Sainte-Anne - XCO
The fourth round of the cross-country competition in UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano took place in the legendary Canadian venue of Mont-Sainte-Anne and, once again, produced some fierce battles. One day after Canada Day celebrations, Catharine Pendrel (Luna) gave Canadian cycling fans another reason to celebrate with her victory at the only Canadian stop of the World Cup. Series leader Julie Bresset (BH-Suntour-Peisey Vallandry) finished third behind Irina Kalentieva (Topeak Ergon), after crashing while at the front of the race with Pendrel. After her crash, Bresset was slow to get going again, and Kalentieva was able to bridge up to her on the fourth lap. The Russian then dropped the World Cup leader to move into second, and Bresset briefly lost control of third to Katerina Nash (Luna) when she had to stop into the pit for a rear wheel change. Marie-Hélène Prémont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) was also close to catching her. However, Bresset was able to reel in Nash on the final half lap to hold onto to third, with Nash taking fourth and Premont fifth. Elite Women: Bresset holds on to series lead Pendrel remains in second in the overall standings after four rounds, 140 points behind Bresset. Premont jumped from ninth to third in the standings, at 480 points, tied on points with Lene Byberg (Specialized). "This was one of my main goals for the season," explained Pendrel. "I had a poor start, but was able to make my way up to the leaders on the first lap. Julie ...

26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Val di Sole - XCO
The final round of the UCI World Cup presented by Shimano concluded in Val di Sole, site of the 2008 world championships. In the cross-country final, Catharine Pendrel (Luna) took her third World Cup victory of the season at the World Cup Final in Val di Sole, Italy, but it wasn't enough to beat Julie Bresset (BH-Suntour-Peisey Vallandry) for the overall title, trailing by a mere 40 points in the final standings. Jaroslav Kulhavy (Specialized) is proving to be unbeatable, as he took his fifth win in seven races at the Elite Men's World Cup final. Kulhavy fended off a strong challenge by the Swiss duo of Nino Schurter and Florian Vogel (both Scott-Swisspower) to outsprint Schurter for the win. Pendrel came into the final race 140 points behind Bresset, and decided to attack from the start. "I figured I had nothing to lose, so I just went hard for the whole race," she explained. By the start of the second lap it was just Pendrel and Bresset, and the Canadian dropped her French rival on the steep climbs. Bresset was struggling with the heat and the climbs, and first Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa Multivan Merida) bridged up and dropped her, and then world champion Maja Wloszczowska (CCC Polkowice) did the same, joining Dahle Flesjaa. Wloszczowska, dropped Dahle Flesjaa in the final half lap, and took second place, establishing herself as a strong contender to retain her rainbow jersey, while Dahle Flesjaa, taking her second World Cup podium in two weeks with third has also moved ...

London@UCI Track World Cup
The 2011-2012 UCI World Cup presented by Samsung reached its zenith in London's new velodrome, where the fourth and final round, which also served as a test event for the upcoming Olympic Games, ended as expected with victory for the British team. In the overall rankings for the series, Germany won with 291 points, thanks largely to wins in Astana and Cali. Defending World Cup holders France came second with 247 points, ahead of Australia with 241. The final assessment of the competitions held in the British capital, where cycling's popularity continues to grow, was extremely positive. The quality of the facilities that will host the Olympic events, the excellent arrangements made by LOCOG and the unique atmosphere of this weekend's competitions in the velodrome give the best possible guarantee of success for the six days that will be devoted to the Olympic track programme. Sir Chris Hoy was the hero of the day once again, never failing to draw the enthusiasm of the crowd. Having already won the keirin, the triple Olympic champion from Beijing also flew to victory in the sprint tournament, seeing off Grégory Baugé of France first, followed by German riders Maximilan Levy and Robert Förstemann. As this was his second win of the season, the first being in Astana, the Scotsman also took first place in the final overall World Cup rankings for the event. Another key moment of the afternoon was the highly anticipated duel between the two best men's pursuit teams. The Australian ...

Namur@UCI Cyclo Cross World Cup
The first-ever round of the Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup raced on the muddy slopes of the citadel in Namur (BEL) offered a great spectacle. Belgian veteran Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) captured a hard-fought win over Belgian Champion Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) in the Elite Men category. The 35 year-old is the new leader in the World Cup rankings. Dutch star Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit) dominated in the women's race, which was raced in snowy conditions. Her compatriot Daphny van den Brand (AA Drink -- Nederland Bloeit) remains overall leader in the World Cup standings. French Champion Francis Mourey (FDJ), Aurélien Duval (France), Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) and Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Revor) led a large group through the first laps on the muddy course in chilly Namur. During the fourth of eight laps, Albert accelerated. Nys followed his example with an attack on the fifth lap. Only Vantornout remained on Nys' wheel. A little later Nys flatted and was caught by an unleashed Stybar. The Czech soon steamed through to neutralize Vantornout's advantage. For a brief moment there were six riders in the group, but Pauwels punctured and lost time. Nys seized his moment to take the lead and set the pace up front. Pauwels didn't bridge back up and in the last lap it seemed like Albert was heading for the win. Nevertheless Nys closed the small gap on the Belgian Champion and with a last effort he reached the finish area solo. Albert was runner-up at 5s ahead of Vantornout ...

26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Novo Mesto - XCO
The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano returned to the Czech Republic for the first time in 14 years with round six in Nove Mesto na Morave for cross-country experts. In front of a home crowd of nearly 20000 fans, Jaroslav Kulhavy (Specialized) won his fourth World Cup victory of the season, and wrapped up the overall title with one race remaining. Catharine Pendrel (Luna) took her second win of the season in the women's race, closing the gap to World Cup leader Julie Bresset (BH-Suntour-Peisey Vallandry) to 140 points. The technical course clearly suited some riders more than others, as a number of top contenders finished well back. Bresset got off to her usual fast start, with Pendrel chasing alone, followed by Eva Lechner (Colnago Farbe Sudtirol). For the first couple of laps the status did not change, but then Bresset started to lose ground as she crashed multiple times, and Pendrel passed and dropped the French rider on the third lap. "It was a very difficult, technical course, and I had much problems," admitted Bresset. "I crashed three times and then Catharine passed me and I could not stay with her, she was too strong." Pendrel took a 32 second lead by the halfway point in the race, and extended it to nearly a minute by the finish. Behind the two leaders, Kalentieva had caught Lechner on the second lap after a slow start, and so did the new European champion, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa (Multivan Merida), as the Italian barely manage to fend off British ...

Downhill highlights @UCI Mountain Bike World Cup 2012
The Gravity series for the RockyRoads UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano returned on Sunday with round two in Val di Sole, Italy, and both the men's and women's competitions saw dominating performances by the winners. Rachel Atherton (GT Factory) beat the rest of the women's field by nearly five seconds, while 2011 World Cup Champion Aaron Gwin (Trek World Racing) was almost eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the men's race. Val di Sole is known for its highly technical, rough and dusty track, and this year was no different, with new sections of the course buried under soft, loamy dirt that was nearly 30 centimeters deep in places. Sabrina Jonnier (Labyrinth Shimano) was the first woman to spend an extended time in the Hot Seat, but she was then bumped out of contention by a pair of Austrian riders - Anita Molcik (Four Elements) and Petra Bernhard (Alpine Commencal Austria) - before a trio of French riders took the top spot in quick succession, with Myriam Nicole (Commencal/Riding Addiction) the first to break the four minute barrier. However, Nicole's reign at the top was brief, with Atherton the next rider on course. Atherton, the World Champion here in Val di Sole in 2008, and coming back from a shoulder injury that derailed most of last season and saw her missed the opening round this year, was noticeably faster than any other woman, finishing 4.485 seconds ahead of Nicole. The only rider remaining was the world champion, Emmeline Ragot (MS ...

HUGE WIN IN FOR MR. MINN AND THE SANTA CRUZ SYNDICATE AT WORLD CUP OPENER!!
ietermaritzburg, South Africa
March 18, 2012
Greg Minnaar wins the UCI World Cup Downhill season opener aboard his Fox/Shimano equipped carbon V-10 with an exhilarating run that had the hill alive with the roar of thousands of fans including the oneLife crew and the Minnaarmy! Steve Peat came in 15th and Josh Bryceland 21st on this improved, pedaling course in Greg’s hometown of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
It always feels like a homecoming for us to be in this friendly city and the Syndicate was welcomed back by all Greg’s family and friends. The local support of the race is big and there were many improvements to the track and the race venue. Training went well all week and the boys came into the season fit and lean. Greg was fastest in qualifier by the slimmest margin of .008 over Aaron Gwin and he picked up max points for his efforts. Steve was 11th fastest and Josh 17th.
Rain was on and off during the week and we had quite a bit come down on race night. Things dried up quick and we had a beautiful day for the race. Everyone got to the top of the hill eager to get the season underway. Greg started into his race run and made a few mistakes and was 2 seconds down at the first split. He gained some time by the second split and was only 1 second off the pace. Steve said, “Greg can make up that time.” As Greg neared the finish the volume of the crowd was at a fevered pitch and this certainly had to boost the effort into overdrive. As the leader board went green the oneLife crew of friends pushed the fence down and flooded into the finish arena while Steve lifted Greg off the ground in victory.
An ecstatic Greg says, “I made a few mistakes on the top part of the track and I knew I had to make up some time. On the bottom section I had to stand and pedal hard and I fought all the way to the finish. You know when you are coming into the finish and you see the oneLife crew breaking the fence down that you’ve had a good run. And then Steve jumped over the fence and grabbed me I knew I had won. It’s a great feeling to do well in front of all my family and friends and their support is amazing!”
Steve comments, “Another great weekend racing in Maritzburg. The fans and the onelife crew made it an awesome weekend, and I feel privileged that it was my 100th World Cup start. Luckily the track dried out and made the racing fast and tight. Although I wasn’t too happy with my 15th place result, I was over the moon for Greg. He dug deep and took the win for the home crowd!!”
Josh placed 21st and said, “After a hard winter training I don’t feel I quite did myself justice on my race run, but I left it all on the hill and the bike feels better than ever. I’m really happy for Greg, not only just with the win in his hometown, but starting the season with a win and full points. Also good to see Peaty Dog still has a little bit of fire in him, as always.”
The win makes Greg’s 16th World Cup win (11 on Santa Cruz) and is his 53rd World Cup Downhill podium, (besting Steve’s 52 podiums). Greg now leads the World Cup overall with 250 points over Aaron Gwin’s 200 points. Steve is 14th in the standings and Josh is 17th. Greg will be in the leader jersey going into the next World Cup in Val Di Sole, Italy in May.

2012 UCI Women's World Cup Flèche Wallonne race
A change to the traditional parcours created an exciting finale to the 15th edition of the Women's Flèche Wallonne. The women covered the same finishing lap as the men, a change from in previous years and a much more challenging prospect than the circuit which has been used previously. The first part of the race was touched with drama -- previous winners and favourites for the day, Emma Pooley (AA Drink) and UCI World Cup's leader, Marianne Vos (Rabo Women), were both involved in crashes and forced to chase back to the peloton. Both, in fact, were delayed multiple times, for mechanical reasons and Vos was forced to change bikes. It was Amanda Spratt (GreenEdge-AIS) who made the significant break of the race, she rode away from the bunch on the first major climb and quickly gained almost 2 minutes lead on the bunch. She was away for almost fifty kilometres, the only rider to challenge her was a chase by Inge Cilvinaite (Diadora Pasta Zara), who 'got stuck' a minute behind Spratt and fifty seconds in front of the bunch. They were left out in front and were only caught by the bunch just before the return to Huy and the first of two climbs of Mur de Huy. A key move was made by Linda Villumsen (GreenEdge-AIS) after that first climb of the Mur. A break of fifty riders formed at the front and she attacked. She quickly used an inflation cartridge, but the tire went flat again almost within sight of the finish, and she started to run. Pendrel and Nash weere surprised to come upon their team mate, with less than 100 metres to go, sweeping around her and sprinting to the line, with Pendrel getting the victory. Gould hung on for third ...
