Living the Language - Bolivia: The Aymara
The streets of the Bolivian capital La Paz have changed, as have the faces of power. Previously untold stories of colonisation and hardship are now being heard, often in languages once excluded from public discourse.

Lenguas

Joke of The Day - Cool Crab (In Aymara Language) - 11 Dec 2011
Please join us for a joke told in Aymara, an official indigenous language of Peru and Bolivia, entitled "Cool Crab." A female crab saw a male crab walking vertically. She thought, "This crab is so cool. I have to marry him." The day after their marriage, the male crab started to walk horizontally like all other crabs. The female crab asked him, "Didn't you walk vertically yesterday?" The male crab answered, "Darling, how can I be so drunk every day?"

Peru: Language Discrimination on Quechua Speakers
There is an intense level of discrimination towards indigenous-language-speakers in Andean countries such as Peru or Bolivia. This documentary explores the challenge that Quechua speaking persons have to face everyday when they have to litigate at courts of Cuzco, the former capital of the Quechua-speaking Inca Empire. FOT 3 Episode 11: Bolivia
Bolivia's Aymara youth are showing new pride in their culture by creating and singing songs in their own language. From the country's first Aymara president, Evo Morles, to its first Aymara Chancellor, the voice of the Aymara people is being heard around the country. Once banned, the Aymara language is now one of the official languages of Bolivia and has been taught in schools since 1994. Radio San Gabriel, a station that airs exclusively in the Aymara language is branching out and creating educational television shows in the Aymara language.

26exchange
How can we overcome barriers to understanding created by different languages? How can we create greater dialogue between cultures when such language barriers exist? A collaboration between International PEN, 26, Pentagram and UNESCO, 26 Exchanges is an exhibition resulting from the Free the Word! festival 2009 to see what happened when one language adventures boldly into another. 26 members were twinned with PEN members from around the world to translate a text and tell the story of its journey in translation. Falling back on their own resources, 26 members searched for ways to understand stories in Basque, Khasi, Ndebele and Aymara among others, to find meaning and connections across cultures. The exhibition is a digital installation of these stories with readings from and conversations between the participants.

Prayercast | Peru
Peru is the third largest South American country, encompassing the Andes Mountains and dry coastal plains to the west and the Amazon jungle to the east. The country overflows in natural resources, yet 50% of the population experiences great poverty. Heavily influenced by both the Incan Empire and Spanish colonization, Peru’s people and culture are as vibrant and diverse as their colorful folk art, which blends these two histories. Peru boasts a thriving church of four million evangelicals, but is also the world’s second largest producer of cocaine. War and poverty have multiplied the number of street children, who are often abused and exploited for labor.
Peru’s freedom from an oppressive military government, multiple dictatorships, and fifteen years of
guerilla warfare by terrorists groups, such as the Shining Path, have ushered in strong economic growth in the fishing, coffee, and tourist industries. The prospect for economic development is great, but political corruption, a flawed tax structure, military spending, and enormous economic disparity keep the nation from progress. Peru still needs a stable government with just policies to rescue its people from poverty and from the exploitation of land and workers for cocaine and oil in the Amazon basin. Foreign companies threaten vulnerable people groups who live and work in the environments these companies destroy for profit. Foreign demand for cocaine leaves poor farmers little choice but to grow the crop for their livelihood.
Peru has a strong history of Catholicism, but many Catholics, as well as mountain Quechua and Aymara people, are bound by a syncretistic combination of Christianity and Andean paganism. A strong evangelical presence in Peru has sparked a Christian renaissance among Quechan and Amerindian peoples through recent Bible translations and the work of Christian missions. There is still much work to be done, however. Peru needs pastors and teachers rich in solid biblical theology to mentor the next generation of leaders and to help dissipate the superstitions of the tribal people. Broadcasts from Christian radio stations like HCJB and TWR must continue the work of preaching God’s holy Word over the airwaves. More teams are needed to translate the Bible into the lesser known languages of the Peruvian tribal groups. The needs of the poor and destitute must be at the forefront of the Church’s ministry to practically demonstrate the love of Christ to the lost. May God rain down manna for His hungry people of Peru to be both physically and spiritually fed.

A 4000 YEAR OLD COMPUTER LANGUAGE
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The language is so logical and precisely structured that it is being used to create a programming language that a computer can understand. Unlike most languages of the world, this language has few irregular verbs, no prepositions and almost no exceptions to strict grammatical rules. What would take a long sentence to say in most languages can be said in only a few words in this language. One would think that we are talking about a new language, carefully designed and crafted by modern scientists. But this language, called Aymara, has been spoken by peasants in the Andes for 4000 years! Because of its highly logical structure, Aymara is being used as a bridge language that enables computers to translate one language to another. Since 1986, a computer has been using Aymara to translate Spanish technical and legal documents into English in the office of the Panama Canal Commission. This amazing computer can translate a 60000 word document with 80 percent accuracy in only an hour. The final product must then be reviewed by a translator. Generally speaking, modern languages are less logically structured and more irregular and often cannot express as many shades of meaning as can ancient languages. In other words, as we go back in time, languages are not less structured and less expressive; they are more highly structured and more expressive than today's languages. This is powerful ...
