At the first glance, it seems quite an ordinary town in the state of Kerala. But Kodungallur is an extraordinary place which guards the treasures of the cultural heritage of our state. Kodungallur endowed a lot to retrospect our past with a large number of Koodakallu (remnants of ancient civilizations) excavated from and around the town. So it is believed that it was called 'Koodakkalloor' (Place where koodakallu are found) in ancient times, and later as passing through generations, it transformed to Kodungallur. Kodungallur is one of the holiest destinations for pilgrims of Hindu religion since it has that sacred awe, created by the divine presence of deity Goddess Bhagavati or Kodungallur Amma-The Kaali. The famous Kaali temple, with a wondrous idol of the deity, is located at the heart of the town and popular for its unique customs that are so strange to other parts of Kerala. Besides the presiding deity, there are many other deities installed in various parts of this sprawling temple complex. Masses of believers gather in the temple on the days of Thalappoli and Bharani festivals; of which bharani is more important. Thalapoli is a colourful festival that lasts four days. On all the four days, Ezunnallathu with 9 elephants is held in the evening. The Bharani festival attracts the largest congregation of Oracles (Velichappadu), both men and women, from all over the state.
