Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Raga Basant (Vilambit and Drut together)
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan (1872-1937) is generally acknowledged to have introduced the format of modern Vilambit Khayal, where he did Raga Alaap (improvisation) within a slow rhythmic structure - using the words of the composition. But no recording of Khansahib's long performances (in All India Radio and Concerts) has survived to this day. So - apart from those who listened to him live - one can only imagine how they were like. To have a feel, I have joined two 78 RPM records of the same raga by Ustad Abdul Karim Khansahib - 'Ab maine dekhe' in slow Ektala and 'Phagba brij' in Tintal. I had to struggle a bit to match the pitches and sound quality of the two records - and the result is not entirely satisfactory. Please enjoy.

Cpl. Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan Was an American Soldier
"I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say. And it is permitted to be said such things as, 'Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.' "Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim; he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. "But the really right answer is, 'what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?' The answer's 'no,' that's not America. "Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? "Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, 'He's a Muslim and he might be associated terrorists.' This is not the way we should be doing it in America. "I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. "And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards -- Purple Heart, Bronze Star -- showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. He was 20 years old. "And then, at the very top of the headstone, it didnt have a Christian cross; it didn't have the Star of David; it had crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and he was an American. He was born ...

Abdul Karim Khan ~ Pyara Nazar Nahin (Raga Bilawal)
Khansahib Abdul Karim Khan (1966) Track 1: Pyara Nazar Nahin (Raga Bilawal) Ustad Abdul Karim Khan (Devanagari: अब्दुल करीम ख़ान, Persian script: استاد عبدالکریم خان) (November 11, 1872--1937), was an Indian classical singer of the Kairana gharana (Kirana Gharana). Abdul Karim Khan was born in Kairana village in muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh, North India) in to the Kairana musical family which traced its roots to musician brothers Ghulam Ali and Ghulam Maula. His father, Kale Khan was the grandson of Ghulam Ali. Karim Khan received training under uncle Abdulla Khan and father Kale Khan. He also received guidance from another uncle Nanhe Khan. Apart from vocals and sarangi, he also learnt Veena (Been), Sitar and Tabla. According to a story, he was initially a sarangi player, but decided to switch to vocals because of low status of sarangi players. In early years he used to sing with his brother Abdul Haq. The Baroda ruler was impressed by this singing duo and made them the court musicians. This is where he met Tarabai Mane, who was the daughter of Sardar Maruti Rao Mane, a member of the royal family. When they decided to get married, they were ousted from Baroda. The couple settled down in Bombay. In 1922 Tarabai Mane left Abdul Karim Khan, which apparently had a major impact on his music - making it pensive and meditative. Karim Khan's first wife, Gafooran was the sister of another Kirana master Abdul Wahid Khan, who was also his cousin. Ustad Abdul Karim ...

Raag Jhinjhoti by KhanSahib Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Sb
www.facebook.com A Traditional Bandish in Raag Jhinjhoti Lyrics: Paiyaa Bin Naheen Aawat Chain Kaa se Kahoon Jee ke Bain " I am on pins and needles without My Beloved To whom I tell the Agony of my Heart" --------------- Kairan Gharana Tradition The name of this school of music derives from Kirana or Kairana, a village in Haryana state of central India. It is the birthplace of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan (1872-1937), who was one of the most important musicians of this Gharana and of Hindustani music in general in the twentieth century, and considered by some to be the real founder of the Kirana Gharana. A frequent visitor to the Court of Mysore, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was influenced by Carnatic music. Much to the credit of Abdul Karim Khan, today most Hindustani musicians from Karnataka and Maharashtra are exponents of Kirana Gharana and it has imbibed many of the features of the Carnatic tradition. Common traits of Kirana Gharana include systematic elaboration of a Raga, improvisation in the vilambit laya, and slow spacious alaps employing meendkari. The style is renowned for its melody and sweetness. ------------------- Raag Jhinjhoti is a very sweet Raag of That Khamaj. Many famous songs are composed in Jhinjhoti, like Ghungharu Ki Taraha, Bajta hi Raha Hun Main Koi Hamdam Na Raha, Koi Sahara Na Raha Mere Maheboob Tujhe Meri Muhabbat Ki Qasam Mose Chal Kiye Jaye Hai Re Hai Hai Dekho Saiyan Beiman Teri Ankhon Ke Siva Duniyan Mein Tum Mujhe Yun Bhula Na Paoge MEHDI HASSAN's ...

Utd. Abdul Karim Khan - Natyageet "Prem Seva Sharan" (based on Raag Bhimpalas)
Here is an audio recording of Utd. Abdul Karim Khansaheb, reviver of the Kirana Gharana (if not founder) singing the very popular "Prem Seva Sharan" Marathi Natyageet based on Raag Bhimpalas. One of the reasons for Khansaheb's popularity throughout India was his ability to pick up region-specific and culture-specific songs. His ability to render North Indian Ghazals, West Indian Natyageets, and South Indian Bhajans is unparalleled. This recording is a testament to that. Khansaheb has also sung the popular Natyageet "Nach Sundari Karu Kopa' (based on Raag Jaijaiwanti). Many of Khansaheb's students started their careers (during and following tutelage) in Natya Sangeet, like Pt. Sawai Gandharva, Smt. Hirabai Badodekar and many others. Many artists today feel that Marathi Natya Sangeet is a degeneration from the "more advanced" Hindustani Shastriya (Classical) Music. In this recording, Khansaheb has completely delegitimized that now absurd belief. Enjoy! : )

Lucky Kapoor (Fardeen Khan) lives in Australia and has no interest in taking over his father's business in India. Saba Karim Khan (Feroz Khan) has a great interest in the property, but Mr. Kapoor has no interest in selling the business to Khan. So Khan has Mr. Kapoor killed, making it look like an accident. Jessica Periera (Jaitley), a childhood sweetheart of Lucky, has proof that Mr. Kapoor's death was not an accident--but she keeps it to herself. When Karim Khan meets with Lucky to renegotiate, he finds that Lucky is willing to sell--but he also discovers that Lucky bears a striking resemblance to Karim Khan's own dead son. Although Karim Khan will do anything to make Lucky heir to his own wealth and properties, Lucky is not willing to do so.

Abdul Karim Khan - Raag Shuddh Kalyan
Khansahib Abdul Karim Khan popularised the Kirana School of Music. This must be a very old recording indeed as the Khansahib passed away in 1937 at the age of 73. His disciples included Sawai Gandharva and Roshanara Begum.
