Mississippian revolt against the Spaniards
The Mississipians and related cultures/trading partners would later come across with Spanish explorers of the Juan Pardo expedition, who built a base there in 1567 called Fort San Juan. Expedition documentation and archaeological evidence of the fort and Native American culture both exist. The soldiers were at the fort about 18 months (1567--1568) before the natives killed them and destroyed the fort. (They killed soldiers stationed at five other forts as well; only one man of 120 survived.) Sixteenth-century Spanish artifacts have been recovered from the site, marking the first European colonization in the interior of what became the United States. Between the years 1500-1600 most Mississippian societies lived in a type of society called a chiefdom. Chiefdoms are kin-based societies in which people are ranked according to the family they belong to. Some families have higher status than others. In chiefdoms, the ruler typically comes from a high-status family and has privileges beyond those of ordinary people. Chiefs share some similarities with kings but are not as powerful (they do not collect taxes, for example, or have standing armies). Archaeologists interpret Arkansas Mississippian societies as chiefdoms from descriptions by the de Soto chroniclers in the 1500s and from the archaeological remains of earlier Mississippian societies. A platform mound, for example, provides a prominent, elevated location for the chief's house that is separated from ordinary houses. A ...

Lost Worlds: Georgia| Part 6: Ocmulgee Indian Mounds
LostWorlds.org In America's deep South, in the shadow of the modern metropolis of Atlanta, Georgia lies the remnants of Native American civilizations thousands of years old. From great walled cities that predate the pyramids in Egypt to Georgia's own pyramid-building culture that existed when Europeans first arrived, "Lost Worlds: Georgia" proves that the New World was really an Old World. Forget teepees and dream catchers. Georgia's Indians carved marble statues and housed them in temples built atop multi-story earthen pyramids. "Lost Worlds: Georgia" hopes to dispel many of the outdated stereotypes forged by Hollywood of Native Americans. This groundbreaking documentary takes the viewer back through 4000 years of Georgia's prehistory on a tour through the state's most important Native American archaeological sites. Part historical documentary and part travelogue, this tour includes never-before-seen footage of several unique sites. This video excerpt features one such site: Ocmulgee Mounds. Located an hour south of Atlanta, this site features an earthen pyramid over eight stories tall! Watch the video to learn more about this impressive site. Cahokia Mounds
Added on September 15, 2005. On September 13, 2005, I took another trip out to the ancient Cahokia Mounds. This is a short video I put together of the event. Beingn of Cherokee ancestry, the Cahokia mounds have a great significance to me. History (as recorded by our white conquerors) does not record this, but it is told to us by our grandmothers, that the great mound at Cahokia, known to us as "The Temple of the Sun" was once the place of central rule 1000 years ago. The ancient (and unknown) Cahokians ruled this land up into Canada and down in to Mexico, and even as far as Florida. My Cherokee ancestors who were alleged to be of the Kutani clan of the Cherokee people (the "Ani-Yvwiya"), were the religious and academic masters of the era. The rulers here in Cahokia (where I now live) sent there acolytes to the Kutani for training in priestly ways and they then returned to The Temple of the Sun and participated in the ruling of this land. And yes, I know I look more "Nordic" that Ameridian... I can't help genetics! lol!! (But, the blond hair is from the bottle; the blue eyes from the Creator).
