China News - August 23, 2012: Revisiting Sichuan and New Economic Data
In today's China news, Premier Wen Jiabao has invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel on an official visit to China, state-run CCTV announced today. Merkel will be there between August 30 and 31. In 2008 a magnitude 8 earthquake shook Sichuan province. Official figures from the initial quake say nearly 70000 died, over 10000 were missing, and over 300000 injured. Four years later, a Chinese writer by the pen name of Tie Liu, meaning "Iron Current," visits the worst-hit areas of the earthquake. Tie Liu, whose real name is Huang Zerong, is a journalist and former editor of the Chengdu Daily. He tells NTD about the continued devestation. Manufacturing continues to slow in China this month. HSBC released its Flash Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index figures today. It dipped below the 50 mark point to a nine month low. It's been a tough year for the Aluminum Corp. of China. The state-owned metal giant posted a loss for the first half of the year of 3.25 billion yuan, or 510 million US dollars. China's farm produce prices increased for the fifth consecutive week, according to a report released by the Ministry of Commerce. Rainy and hot weather conditions have affected vegetable production, pushing up wholesale prices of 18 different vegetables. The report indicated a 2.2 percent increase over the previous week.

Perigiali - Mikis Theodorakis
"On the seashore" is a song by Mikis Theodorakis made on a poem by the great Greek poet George Seferis. It is a poem about inevitable changes in our lives where we have to let go of things we love and cherish and move on. The song was written in 1962 . It is a song that carries many of the distinct colours, phrases and sesnsations that make up what is Greece and I tried to couple those with photos that carry these feelings as well. Here it is performed by Maria Farantouri. Denial In a hidden seashore white as a dove we found ourselves in midday, thirsty, but the water undrinkable. On the golden sand we wrote her name, how beautifully the breeze came and erased the writing. We started our life with all our heart, all our breath, all our passion -- a mistake! and we changed our life. George Seferis was the pen name of Georgios Seferiadis (1900 -- 1971). He was one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century, and a Nobel laureate. He was also a career diplomat in the Greek Foreign Service, culminating in his appointment as Ambassador to the UK, a post which he held from 1957 to 1962. Mikis Theodorakis , born July 29, 1925, is one of the most renowned Greek songwriters and composers ...

Mad Avenue Blues
Following on the success of the Wall Street Meltdown parodies, I wrote Mad Avenue Blues. Like Wall Street Meltdown and WSM Redux (both on YouTube), the new video takes a popular song and substitutes industry-specific lyrics. Only instead of finance, Mad Avenue Blues is about the media/advertising world and the impact to the traditional models brought about by the accelerating migration to digital. Sung to Don McLean's "American Pie", this 19 stanza song was written and produced in just one day. I did this so that I could answer those who respond to my video projects with the knee-jerk "you obviously have too much time on your hands". Mad Avenue Blues was produced for non-commercial amusement purposes only and is not intended to offend any people or companies appearing in the video. All images were found on the internet and are the property of their rights owners. L. McDuff (pen name - for my Yellow Labrador, Lady McDuff)

Isaac Asimov (1920- 1992 RIP) April, 1986 Original air date You Tube Compression
Isaac Asimov (c. January 2, 1920[1] April 6, 1992; originally Исаак Озимов but now transcribed into Russian as Айзек Азимов), was a Russian-born American author and professor of biochemistry, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 9000 letters and postcards.[2] His works have been published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System (the sole exception being the 100s; philosophy and psychology).[3] Asimov is widely considered a master of the science-fiction genre and, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, was considered one of the "Big Three" science-fiction writers during his lifetime.[4] Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series[5]; his other major series are the Galactic Empire series and the Robot series, both of which he later tied into the same fictional universe as the Foundation Series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those pioneered by Robert A. Heinlein and previously produced by Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson[6]. He penned numerous short stories, among them "Nightfall", which in 1964 was voted by the Science Fiction Writers of America the best short science fiction story of all time, an accolade that many still find persuasive. Asimov wrote the Lucky Starr series of juvenile science-fiction novels using the pen name Paul French ...
