1920s Charleston
The Charleston was the dance that captured the spirit of the 1920s. It was danced with wild abandon by a new generation of independent young Americans, to the new hot jazz that was flooding the country. The dance began in Charleston, South Carolina, the city from which it takes its name. In 1923, The Charleston was featured in the Broadway show Runnin Wild, one of the biggest hits of the decade. The song from the show - James P. Johnsons tune The Charleston - spread the fad across the nation and onwards to the rest of the world. Josephine Baker became famous for performing the Charleston in Paris in the 1920s. The Charleston is both a solo and partnered dance, both wildly exuberant and exciting to watch. As the hot jazz of the 1920s gave way to the swingin jazz of the 1930s and 40s, the partnered version of Charleston evolved into Lindy Hop. Take a dark journey into the forgotten, where time stands still. The paint has peeled off the walls and the only occupants are the souls of those left behind. This is the Asylum.
Opened in the early 1920s, the Asylum closed down and was abandoned decades ago. Rooms remain untouched – left as they were when the last of the employees departed. These buildings stand as a testament to the horrors and mistreatment that patients had to endure during the time of its operation.
Our 7 month journey into the Asylum led us on many adventures; from dodging security vehicles, ghostly figures and even a meth head. This is no place for the faint of heart. Asbestos blanketed every room we entered like new winter snow, so shooting was sometimes difficult.
This project is a combination of traditional HDR, tone-mapping, and standard time-lapse techniques. With the use of the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero and a Merlin head, we were able to capture the grit and the grime of this wondrous place, like it had never been captured before. Every single frame in this production is a still photograph, no video was shot. It took nearly 35,000 individual frames over 7 months to complete this project.
In return, it took tremendous help from many individuals to complete this project.
Many thanks to, Russ Scalf, Chris Griffin, Nick Kurtz, Brett Cote, Walter Wayman and Laura Buchta.Without you, this project wouldn't be possible.

Shwood Select 2012 Lookbook
Experimenting with a 3D technique from the early 1800’s, Shwood presents a stereoscopic view of their new “Shwood Select” premium line of wooden eyewear. Available now through www.shwoodshop.com.
More Info on Stereoscopy:
Invented in 1838, Stereoscopy is a technique used for creating the illusion of three-dimensional depth from images on a two-dimensional plane. Presenting two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer, these two-dimensional images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3D depth. In most cases, a special viewing device (stereoscope) is used to correctly view the images in order to perceive the intended effect. However, by using “Wiggle Stereoscopy” and simply alternating between the left and right images of a stereogram, one is able to achieve a similar “you are there” effect. Between the 1840s and the 1920s, stereographs served as an important method of entertainment, education, and virtual travel to exotic places of the world.
