Ainsdale

Ainsdale-on-Sea is a village in the borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England, situated three miles south of Southport, of which it is a suburb. At the 2001 Census it had a population of 12,723.
Ainsdale was listed in the Domesday Book as Einulvesdel. Deriving from Old Norse name Einulfsdalr, this apparently was the valley occupied by a Scandinavian by the name of Einulf.
Ainsdale formed part of Sir Cuthbert Halsall of Halsall's estates during the early part of the 1600s. After financial difficulties the land containing Ainsdale (then Aynsdale) had to be sold. In 1634 the ownership was passed to Robert Blundell. The lands were passed from generation to generation within the Blundell family and remained in their ownership until the mid 1900s.
Throughout the 1800s Ainsdale remained an agricultural community. Prior to the British Agricultural Revolution fields and farms in the locality were small and land was enclosed. The 1841 Census listed 176 inhabitants in 33 houses with occupations of farmer, agricultural labourers and servants.

Aintree

Aintree is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside. It lies between Walton and Maghull on the A59 road, about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) north of Liverpool city centre, in North West England.
It is best known as the site of Aintree Racecourse, which since the 19th century has staged the Grand National horserace. During the 1950s and '60s, there was also a three-mile-long motor racing circuit on the site, which used the same grandstands as the horserace. A shorter form of the racing circuit is still used for various events, although car racing ceased in 1982.
Historically part of Lancashire, the name Aintree, thought to be of Saxon origin, means "one tree" or "tree standing alone." In 1999, the parish council decided to revert to its original name of Aintree Village; this request was granted by Sefton Council. Local legend held that a tree on Bull Bridge Lane, one of the oldest parts of the village, was "the Ain tree".[citation needed] The tree had to be cut down in 2004 because it had become diseased and started to lean into the road.

Allerdale is a non-metropolitan district of Cumbria, England, with borough status. Its council is based in Workington and the borough has a population of 93,492 according to the 2001 census.
The Borough of Allerdale was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the municipal borough of Workington, the urban districts of Maryport, Cockermouth and Keswick; and the rural districts of Cockermouth and Wigton, all of which were within the administrative county of Cumberland. In 1995 Allerdale was granted borough status.
The name derives from the ancient region of Allerdale, represented latterly by the two wards of Cumberland, called Allerdale above Derwent and Allerdale below Derwent.
Elections to the borough council are held every 4 years with 56 councillor being elected from 31 wards. No party has had a majority on the council since Labour lost their majority at the 2003 election. Birkdale is a village and district in the southern part of the conurbation of the town of Southport, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, though historically in Lancashire, in the north-west of England. The village is located on the Irish Sea coast, approximately a mile away from the centre of its now parent town. From 1894 to 1912, Birkdale and the adjoining suburb/village of Ainsdale were administered by Birkdale Urban District Council before becoming part of the county borough of Southport. Until 1 April 1974, Birkdale lay in the traditional borders of the county of Lancashire. As of the 2001 Census, it had a population of 12,265. Birkdale also inspired the name for a new urban mixed use community twelve miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina in Huntersville, North Carolina called Birkdale Village.

Blackpool

It is situated along England's west coast by the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries, 17.5 miles (28.2 km) northwest of Preston, 27 miles (43 km) north of Liverpool, 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Bolton and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Manchester. It has an estimated population of 140,000, making it the third most populous settlement in North West England after Manchester and Liverpool, and a population density that makes it the fourth most densely populated borough of England and Wales outside Greater London.
Throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, Blackpool was a coastal hamlet in Lancashire's Hundred of Amounderness, and remained such until the mid-18th century when it became fashionable in England to travel to the coast during the summer to bathe in sea water to improve well-being. In 1781, visitors attracted to Blackpool's 7-mile (11 km) sandy beach were able to use a newly built private road, built by Thomas Clifton and Sir Henry Hoghton. Stagecoaches began running to Blackpool from Manchester in the same year, and from Halifax in 1782. In the early 19th century, Henry Banks and his son-in-law John Cocker erected new buildings in Blackpool such that its population grew from less than 500 in 1801 to over 2,500 in 1851. St John's Church in Blackpool was consecrated in 1821.

Blowick is a suburb of the town of Southport, Merseyside, England.
Blowick is part of the ancient parish of North Meols and was formerly a detached settlement, on the northern fringe of what is now Southport.
The name derives from the Old Norse name Bla Vik meaning "dark bay" as it was located at the end of a large inlet on the ancient lake of Martin Mere called "The Wyke". There are historically two Blowicks: Higher Blowick, situated around what is now the junction of Everard Road and Southbank Road, and Lower Blowick (Butts Lane, Norwood Road, etc.), which is the area around what locals tend to refer to now as simply Blowick.
The Southport gas holder on Crowland Street was the tallest building on the Southport skyline, visible from as far afield as Blackpool and Parbold. The largest tower was decommissioned in January 2008, due to an environmental risk posed by the storage of oil within it. In September 2008, National Grid announced that two of the three gas towers would be dismantled by August 2009, with the fate of the smallest tower remaining uncertain. The news has met with mixed reactions from local residents, though the gasometer was voted one of the North West’s biggest eyesores in a competition run by the BBC.

Blundellsands or Blundell Sands is an area of Merseyside, England in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, and a Sefton council electoral ward. At the 2001 Census the population was recorded as 11,514.
Blundellsands is an area north to the city of Liverpool and to the west of Crosby with Hightown and Little Crosby to the north of itself, Great Crosby and Thornton to the east and Brighton-le-Sands and Waterloo to the south. The area is served by Blundellsands & Crosby and Hall Road railway stations. Its shoreline, the northern part of Crosby Beach, includes parts of the popular exhibit, Another Place, designed by the sculptor Antony Gormley. Several of the Gormley statues are accessible from the Burbo Bank car park. The area is generally considered to be very affluent with many local celebrities, footballers, politicians, businessmen and wealthy people in general making up the vast majority of residents calling this their home.

Bootle, along with Southport, is one of the two main administrative headquarters for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton. Among Bootle's neighbouring districts are Kirkdale to the south, Walton to the east, with Seaforth and Litherland to the north. To the west the Port of Liverpool flanks the River Mersey.
The old civic centre of Bootle contains large Victorian buildings such as the town hall and the municipal baths. East of this centre is a sizable area of large office blocks, to the west is the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and large areas of docks lining the River Mersey. To the north lies the New Strand Shopping Centre, which gained notoriety after the abduction and murder of two-year-old James Bulger in 1993.

The Chorley Parliament constituency is a constituency in the House of Commons, and until recently it was coterminous with the borough. Through boundary changes, Croston, Eccleston, Bretherton and Mawdesley were transferred to the South Ribble constituency. The current Member of Parliament for Chorley is Lindsay Hoyle, who was first elected to the seat in 1997.

Borough of Copeland

The Borough of Copeland is a local government district and borough in western Cumbria, England. Its council is based in Whitehaven. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the borough of Whitehaven, Ennerdale Rural District and Millom Rural District.
The name is derived from an alternate name for the Cumberland ward of Allerdale above Derwent, which covered roughly the same area.
Different explanations exist for the name. According to a document issued at the time of the borough's grant of arms, the name Copeland is derived from kaupland or bought land, the area of the Forest having been bought from the estate of St Bees Priory.
Angus Winchester (1985) upholds that the name kaupland derives from the Irish-Norse invasion of the area in the tenth century (Wainwright 1975). According to this explanation, the area was purchased from the Kingdom of Strathclyde, possibly with loot from Ireland. Geoffrey Hodgson (2008) argues that this Viking invasion accounts for the high frequency of the Hodgson surname in the area.

The Borough of Fylde is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. It covers part of the Fylde plain, after which it is named. The council's headquarters are in St Annes. The armorial arms of the borough bear the motto of the former Fylde RDC "Gaudeat Ager" from Psalm 96: ‘Let the field (Fylde) be joyful' - "Let Fylde Prosper". The armorial bearings comprise a complete Achievement of Arms, that is - shield, crest and helm and mantling, supporters, badge and motto. They reflect the union of the three local authorities in the area: Lytham St Annes Borough Council, Kirkham Urban District Council and Fylde Rural District Council.

Borough of Halton
Halton is a local government district in North West England, with borough status and administered by a unitary authority. It was created in 1974 as a district of Cheshire, and became a unitary authority area on 1 April 1998. It consists of the towns of Widnes and Runcorn and the civil parishes of Hale, Daresbury, Moore, Preston Brook, Halebank and Sandymoor. The district borders Merseyside, Warrington and Cheshire West and Chester. The borough straddles the River Mersey - the area to the north (including Widnes) is historically part of Lancashire, that to the south (including Runcorn) part of Cheshire.
Although Halton dates back to the 12th century (and beyond) when land on both sides of the river belonged to the Barony of Halton, the origin of the District Council was the outcome of the local government commission's suggested reforms of England, in 1969, the Redcliffe-Maud Report. This proposed to create metropolitan counties constituted of Metropolitan District Councils in the most urbanised parts of England. The model was that of the London Boroughs and Greater London Council formed in 1964. South Lancashire and North Cheshire were two of these and two new Metropolitan Counties were to be formed around Liverpool (as 'Merseyside' county) and Manchester/Salford (as 'Greater Manchester' county.) however, the towns of Widnes and Runcorn (and the County Borough of Warrington) which lay between these were reluctant to join either. The Commission agreed that the Halton group and Warrington were to become District Councils within Cheshire, as they were detached from Lancashire by the two new Metropolitan Counties controlling the territory to the north. However, the Metropolitan Counties ceased as local government units (along with the GLC) in 1984 and any remaining powers were devolved to the constituent Metropolitan Districts which cooperated over joint police authorities and fire services.

Rigmaiden Farm and Cottage date back to the 17th century. Kiln Barn and Hare Barn have been renovated and converted into residential dwellings. Damson Cottage has also been renovated and was originally of cruck frame construction.

It is historically famous as a former principality and for the production of Cheshire cheese, salt, bulk chemicals, and woven silk.

City of Carlisle

City of Salford
The City of Salford ( /ˈsɒlfəd/) is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. It is named after its largest settlement,Salford, but covers a far larger area which includes the towns of Eccles, Swinton and Pendlebury, Walkden and Irlam which apart from Irlam each have a population of over 35,000. The city has a population of 218,000, and is administered from the Salford Civic Centre in Swinton.

It is bounded on the south east by the River Irwell, which forms its boundary with the city of Manchester and by the Manchester Ship Canal to the south, which forms its boundary with Trafford. The metropolitan boroughs of Wigan, Bolton and Bury lie to the west, northwest and north respectively. Some parts of the city, which lies directly west of Manchester, are highly industrialised and densely populated, but around one third of the city consists of rural open space. This is because the western half of the city stretches across an ancient peat bog known as Chat Moss.

Crossens

Crossens is the northernmost district of the town of Southport, Merseyside, England and part of the ancient parish of North Meols. Whilst most of the village is now within Merseyside, part of northern Crossens known as Fiddlers Ferry, is in West Lancashire. Formerly, Crossens was a detached settlement lying on the western edge of Martin Mere, but after the drainage of the Mere and the expansion of Southport, it had become absorbed into the town's conurbation.
Formerly Crossenes or Crosnes meaning a “ness” or headland with a cross. The cross was possibly a guide for shipping or people crossing the Ribble Estuary from Freckleton (near Lytham). A hospice or lodging house was sited in Crossens where travellers could rest after making the crossing. It is also believed to be the point at which 2,000 horsemen from a retreating Royalist force crossed the Ribble estuary following the battle of Marston Moor. They later joined the battle at Lathom Hall.

Cumbria
Cumbria ( /ˈkʌmbriə/, locally [ˈkʊmbɾiə]) is a non-metropolitan county in North West England. The county and Cumbria County Council, its local authority, came into existence in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. Cumbria's largest settlement and county town is Carlisle and the only other major urban area is the town of Barrow-in-Furness on the south-western tip of the county. It consists of six districts, and in 2008 had a population of just under half a million. Cumbria is one of the most sparsely populated counties in the United Kingdom, with 73.4 people per km2 (190/sq mi). Formby is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. It has a population of approximately 25,000.
Historically a part of Lancashire, three manors are recorded in the Domesday book under "Fornebei" as Halsall, Walton and Poynton. The town's early recorded industry points to cockle raking, and shrimp fishing (in addition to arable ventures) last through into the 19th century. By 1872 the township and sub-district as of 1872 was made up of two chapelries (St. Peter and St. Luke), and contained Birkdale township, the hamlets of Ainsdale and Raven-Meols and Altcar parish. Formby was built on the plain adjoining the Irish Sea coast a few miles north of the Crosby channel where the sands afford shelter to the towns.
Formby is affluent with high owner-occupation and car ownership. Strong economic ties are retained with nearby Liverpool to which it acts as a dormitory town for some of its residents.

The area is often considered to be affluent with local celebrities, footballers, politicians and businessmen calling this their home, see people from Formby. Shireburn Road in Freshfield is the most expensive road in Merseyside, house prices on the exclusive road averaged £1,159,831 in 2009.
The name did not exist until Formby's second railway station, Freshfield, was built in 1854. The name was chosen, as the local landowner, a certain Mr Fresh, owned the adjacent field.
A process of reverse naming seems to have occurred with some people referring to the area of Formby around this station as "Freshfield". Freshfield is generally regarded as the more affluent area of Formby[citation needed], largely due to a number of large private residences in the area. It exists from Freshfield beach (situated beyond the pinewoods) to Dobb's Brook or Gutter (commonly referred to as Long Lane "Ditch").

Ince Blundell

Ince Blundell is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton on Merseyside, England but historically in Lancashire. It is situated to the north of Liverpool on the A565 road and to the east of the village of Hightown. There are two associated hamlets of Lady Green and Carr Houses.
Ince Blundell is probably the oldest settlement within the borough of Sefton.
The name Ince comes from Hinne a Celtic word meaning "island in the marsh". This name bears evidence to Ince lying on a sandy ridge in the Alt valley, a place that in the past had been marshland.
In the 14th century, John Blundell, whose family were the predominant landowners in the area, added his surname to Ince. This was to distinguish it from the Ince in Cheshire and Ince-in-Makerfield near Wigan.
Built from 1720, Ince Blundell Hall was the home of the Blundells of Ince, who became the Weld-Blundells until 1959. The house is a Grade II* listed building, and is now a nursing home run by the Canonesses of Saint Augustine.

Kennessee Green is a village in the southern half of Maghull in Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. Kennessee Green has two churches: St Andrew's Church and St. Georges Church. The village of Kennessee Green is situated around Maghull railway station, St Andrew's Church and the former epileptic homes located around Damfield Lane and Deyes Lane. The village also contains two high schools, Deyes High School and Maricourt High School.
Historically in Lancashire, Kennessee Green grew when the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway was founded. Wealthy families moved from Liverpool to the area and lived in the large Victorian houses around Tree View Court and Maghull railway station. By 1901, Kennessee Green was significantly larger than Maghull itself, and was connected to Maghull through various narrow roads.
During the 20th century, Kennessee Green and Maghull both grew with housing estates being built which consequently connected the areas together. The new housing estates did not respect the historic street patterns of both of the villages. In 1974, Kennessee Green and Maghull were moved from the West Lancashire Rural District in the administrative and ceremonial county of Lancashire and placed into the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in the also newly formed ceremonial county of Merseyside.

Litherland is a suburban village in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. It was formerly an urban district, which included Seaforth and Ford. It neighbours Waterloo to the north, Seaforth to the west, and Bootle to the south and is 5 miles north of Liverpool city centre.
The name Litherland is a hybrid name, from Old Norse hliŏ/hlith-ar which means "slope" and Old English land "land".
Litherland was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Liderlant, however there was no mention of Liverpool at that time. The first manor of Litherland consisted of one half and two quarters, the areas being Litherland including what is now Seaforth (the half) and present day Orrell and Ford (the two quarters).
Litherland remained a poor area until the arrival of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in 1774, this brought the area into the modern world, originally providing a safe route through Lancashire from Liverpool to Wigan, and eventually in 1816 through to Leeds. The route became very busy primarily for goods and later for the transportation of passengers. The outcome of all this activity was to bring prosperous businessmen from the City to the countryside, where they had a desire to live.

As a result of boundary revisions for the 2010 general election the Crosby constituency was abolished with its northern parts, including Little Altcar, being merged with the Eastern parts of Sefton that were formerly part of the Knowsley North and Sefton East constituency, to form the new constituency of Sefton Central, which is currently represented by the Labour Party MP Bill Esterson.

Little Crosby is a small village in Merseyside, North West England. Despite being a suburb within 8 miles of Liverpool it has retained its rural character by, for example, opting not to have street lights.
As part of Lancashire the village was an urban district in its own right until annexed to the Great Crosby urban district in 1932. This urban district was combined with other districts to form the municipal borough of Crosby in 1937. This in turn was absorbed into the new Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in 1974.
The village is perhaps the oldest extant Roman Catholic village in England, the squires being the notable recusant Blundell family. The village character has changed little from a 17th century description that "it had not a beggar, ..an alehouse ..[or] a Protestant in it..." In 2009 Protestants reside in the village as old values change - Protestant inhabitants however must be 'vetted' by the local Squire before occupation of one of the 50 or so dwellings. In 1986 a senior member of the hamlet was quoted in the Liverpool Echo as saying "Protestants are discouraged from settling in our village".[citation needed]

Lunt is a small village in the borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England, close to Sefton Village and to the west of Maghull and is in the L29 postcode.
The name derives from either the Old Norse word Lundr or the Old Swedish word lunder, both meaning "grove" or "copse". This was likely a reference to the remnants of a large ancient forest that existed in the area at the time the settlement was founded. The town was first documented in 1251 in the Chartulary of Cockersand Abbey, where it was referred to as "de Lund".
Residents are considering changing its name to tackle vandals who alter signs in the village. Roadsigns in Lunt have been repeatedly targeted by vandals who change the "L" to a "C". A similar situation has arisen in the Austrian town of Fucking, where the town sign has been repeatedly stolen. However, as in Fucking, certain residents have been reluctant towards a name change, perceiving it as an erosion of the town's heritage. A proposed revision of the name is Launt, which would be pronounced in the same way.

At the 2001 Census the village and civil parish of Lydiate had a population of 6,672.
There is evidence that the settlement of the area dates back to at least the middle of the 10th century. Indeed, one possible root of the name is the Old English hlid-geat meaning 'swing gate', which would have an association with animal farming. Lydiate is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and is described as having a "wood a mile long", and there is evidence of the existence of extensive forests at that time, particularly of oak and elm.

Meols Cop is not an area of Southport, but simply a railway station located within Blowick, Southport Merseyside in north-western England. It is not to be confused with Meols on the Wirral Peninsula. The two can be differentiated by pronunciation — Meols Cop is pronounced Meels, but Meols, Wirral is pronounced Mells.
The station is served by trains to Southport railway station or Wigan Wallgate railway station and beyond. Meols Cop railway station opened on 2 September 1887, and served both lines. The line from Butts Lane Junction to Altcar & Hillhouse closed on 26 September 1938, but the line through Meols Cop is still open today. As in 1965, the direct line from Pool Hey Junction to St. Luke's closed and trains to and from Wigan were diverted to run via the former Altcar line and a section of the former Southport to Preston line. Meols Cop railway station remained open and is served by Wigan and Southport trains today; goods train services were however withdrawn on 27 November 1967.

The area is popular with tourists who enjoy the area's natural unspoilt beauty, much of which lies within the Forest of Bowland.
The Ribble Valley is statistically the wealthiest enclave in Lancashire and businesses in the area reflect this, including a Michelin listed restaurant and a Bentley car dealership. The area is a popular place with those who wish to relocate from London to somewhere more rural and community orientated.
The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, as a merger of the municipal borough of Clitheroe, Longridge urban district, Clitheroe Rural District, part of Blackburn Rural District, part of Burnley Rural District, and part of Preston Rural District, as well as the Bowland Rural District from the West Riding of Yorkshire, hence the addition of the Red Rose of Lancaster and White Rose of York on the council's coat of arms.

Rossendale
Rossendale is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. It is made up of a number of small former mill towns centred around the valley of the River Irwell in the industrial North West. The district combines urban with rural aspects, and is close to the more populated areas of Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Manchester and Rochdale.

Southport ( /ˈsaʊθpɔrt/) is a seaside town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast of North West England and is fringed to the north by the Ribble estuary. The town is situated 16.5 miles (26.6 km) to the north of the city of Liverpool and 14.8 miles (23.8 km) southwest of the city of Preston.
Historically a part of Lancashire, the town in its present form was founded in 1792 when a hotel was built at what now is the south end of Lord Street. At that time the area was sparsely populated and was dominated by sand dunes. During the turn of the 19th century the area became popular with tourists due to the easy access from the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the town quickly grew. The rapid growth of Southport largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era. Town attractions include Southport Pier with its Southport Pier Tramway, the second longest seaside pleasure pier in the British Isles, and Lord Street, an elegant tree-lined shopping street once home of Napoleon III of France.

The Metropolitan Borough of Tameside is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester in North West England. Trafford is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. The Trafford area has a long heritage, with evidence of Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Roman activity. Amongst the relics of the past are two castles – one of them a Scheduled Ancient Monument – and over 200 listed buildings. The area underwent change in the late 19th century and the population rapidly expanded with the arrival of the railway. Trafford is the home of Manchester United F.C. and Lancashire County Cricket Club and since 2002 the Imperial War Museum North.

Warrington
Warrington is a town, borough and unitary authority area of Cheshire, England. It stands on the banks of the River Mersey, which is tidal to the west of the weir at Howley. Wyre is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. Its council is based in Poulton-le-Fylde.
The district is named after the River Wyre, which runs through the district. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, and was a merger of the municipal borough of Fleetwood, along with Poulton-le-Fylde, Preesall and Thornton-Cleveleys urban districts and Garstang Rural District.
Elections to Wyre Borough Council take place every four years on the first Thursday in May. All 55 councillors are elected from 26 wards. Since the formation of the council in 1973 it has been under the control of the Conservative Party with the exception of one term from 1995 to 1999 when the Labour Party held control of the council.

Albert Pierrepoint
Albert Pierrepoint (30 March 1905 – 10 July 1992) is the most famous member of the family that provided three of the United Kingdom's official hangmen in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Clayton, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and lived in Bradford, Lincoln, Oldham and the seaside resort of Southport.
Albert Pierrepoint was the middle child and eldest son of Henry and Mary Pierrepoint. He was influenced by the side-occupation of his father and uncle: as an 11-year-old he wrote, in response to a school "When I grow up ..." exercise, "When I leave school I should like to be the Official Executioner". He spent his school summer holidays at the home of his Uncle Tom and Aunt Lizzie in Clayton, his own family having moved to Huddersfield when Henry ceased to be an executioner, and he became very close to his uncle. While Tom was away on business, his aunt would allow the boy to read the diary Tom kept of his executions. In 1917, at the age of twelve, he began work at the Marlborough Mills in Failsworth, near Oldham, earning six shillings a week. Following Henry's death in 1922, he took charge of Henry's papers and diaries, which he studied at length. Towards the end of the 1920s he changed his career, becoming a drayman for a wholesale grocer, delivering goods ordered through a travelling salesman. In 1930 he learned to drive a car and a lorry to make his deliveries, earning two pounds five shillings (£2.25) a week. On 19 April 1931 Pierrepoint wrote to the Prison Commissioners offering his services as an Assistant Executioner to his uncle should he or any other executioner retire. Within a few days he received a reply that there were currently no vacancies.

Dominic Matteo
Dominic Matteo (born 28 April 1974) is a Scottish former professional association footballer who played as a defender and centre-midfielder from 1992 to 2009.
He played for Liverpool, Sunderland, Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City. His greatest number of appearances was with Liverpool. His most notable individual moment was his goal in the Champions League against A.C. Milan. He was capped 6 times by Scotland after originally playing for England as a youngster. The latter part of his career was increasingly impacted by injury which led to his retirement in 2009 at the age of 35.
Born in Dumfries where his father, who "wanted his boy to play like Cesare Maldini", ran Matthew's Cafe in Friars Vennel, Matteo started his career at Liverpool F.C., for whom he played between 1992 and 2000 (with a small Sunderland A.F.C. loan in between). He scored two goals for Liverpool, one against Southampton in the league and another against Huddersfield in the FA Cup.
In August 2000 he joined Leeds United, and made his team debut against A.C. Milan the following month, in a UEFA Champions League contest. He was one of Leeds' best players through their 2000–01 Champions League campaign, in which they achieved a semi-final place. He is fondly remembered by Leeds fans especially for the goal he scored at the San Siro against AC Milan, in the first group stage which ensured they would progress through to the next round. He ended that Champions League campaign with two goals, having also scored earlier against Besiktas.

Ginger McCain
Donald "Ginger" McCain (21 September 1930 – 19 September 2011) was an English National Hunt horse trainer, perhaps best known for training the legendary racehorse Red Rum. A successful trainer who won many races, he trained Red Rum at a Southport beach on Merseyside, where McCain was born.
A former national serviceman in the Royal Air Force as a motorcycle despatch rider, he was also a member of the RAF scrambling team.
McCain applied for a training permit in 1953 and began training horses in 1962, using small stables behind the showroom of his used-car store in his hometown of Southport. He bought a horse for 6,000 guineas, which later turned out to be suffering from a debilitating bone disease. The horse was Red Rum.
McCain went on to train the winner of the world-famous Grand National steeplechase four times, three times in the 1970s with Red Rum and a fourth time in 2004 with Amberleigh House. His first and fourth victories were over 30 years apart.
The 1973 Grand National is considered by many to be the greatest Grand National and was a famous dual of 9 mins 2 secs between Red Rum and Crisp (horse), with L'Escargot (horse) (a previous double Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and future 1975 Grand National winner) well beaten in third place, breaking the course record which had stood for nearly 40 years and would remain unbeaten until it was demolished by Mr Frisk in the 1990 Grand National immediately after a number of safety changes had speeded up the course for that year.

Jack Rodwell
Jack Christian Rodwell (born 11 March 1991) is an English International footballer who plays for Everton as a midfielder. Rodwell has represented his country at all levels from Under-16 to the senior team.
Born in Southport, Merseyside and an avid Everton supporter as a child, Rodwell joined the Everton's youth system at the age of seven, making his Under-18s debut at 14 and his debut for Everton's reserve team at the age of 15. In March 2008, he appeared as a substitute on his Premier League debut – before also featuring as a replacement in the final game of the season, replacing Tim Cahill in a 1–0 victory over Sunderland which he scored in, and signed his first professional contract with Everton on 17 March 2010 after being at everton for 6 years. He made his first professional start against Blackburn Rovers on 16 August 2008, playing the full 90 minutes. Rodwell scored his first senior goal for Everton in the FA Cup against Aston Villa in February 2009. That same month, he signed a five-year contract with Everton.

John Pugh
John David Pugh (born 28 June 1948; Liverpool) is a Liberal Democrat politician in the United Kingdom. He is Member of Parliament (MP) for Southport. First elected in 2001 with a majority of 3,007, he was re-elected in 2005 with a slightly increased majority of 3,838, and again in 2010 with a majority of 6,024, or 13.8%.
Pugh was educated at Prescot Grammar School and Maidstone Grammar School. He graduated from Durham University, attending St Cuthbert's Society, where he studied Philosophy.
Formerly a religious studies teacher and Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, Pugh has lived in Southport since 1974.
Pugh joined the Liberal Party in 1977. Pugh served on Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council, representing Birkdale, from 1987 until his election to Parliament. At the time of his election, Pugh was leader of the council (from 1992), and of the Sefton Liberal Democrats.
In the 2007 leadership election, John Pugh supported Nick Clegg in preference to Chris Huhne.

Lee Gordon McKillop (born 4 August 1968) is an English stand-up comedian and actor, known by the stage name Lee Mack. He is well known in the United Kingdom for writing and starring in the sitcom Not Going Out, for being a team captain on Would I Lie to You? and for hosting Lee Mack's All Star Cast.
Mack was born on 4 August 1968 and lived in Southport, then in Lancashire and now in Merseyside, above a pub until he was 12 when his parents separated and he moved to Blackburn, Lancashire. He went to Birkdale County Junior School and Stanley High School. After leaving school he worked in a bingo hall and as a stableboy. After working at the stable for three days he asked if he could try and ride a horse; the trainer agreed and the first horse he ever rode was Red Rum. After that, Mack became a blue coat for Pontin's at Hemsby near Great Yarmouth. After appearing on stage drunk one night, and calling an audience member a "cunt", he was sacked from the Hemsby team, and did six months at Pontins in Morecambe. Mack admitted during an interview to having a massive fear of flying.

Paul Dalglish
Paul Kenneth Dalglish (born 18 February 1977 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former professional football player and manager.
Dalglish, son of former Scotland international Kenny Dalglish, was born in Glasgow though spent his childhood in Liverpool where his father managed Liverpool F.C. As a child, he was the team mascot for Liverpool in their famous 1989 league title decider against Arsenal at Anfield. He started his career as a youth player with Celtic before joining Liverpool, but made no appearances for either of his father's former clubs.
Dalglish was then signed by his father for Newcastle United, he made 14 appearances, scoring two goals against Tranmere Rovers in the League Cup and Sheffield Wednesday in the league. After a successful loan spell, he permanently joined Norwich City in 1999 for £300,000, but failed to establish himself in three years at the club.
Dalglish went on to have spells with Blackpool (scoring two goals against Luton in the league and Barnsley in the FA Cup) and Linfield and loan periods with Scunthorpe and Wigan Athletic.

Richard Corbett
Richard Corbett (born 6 January 1955, Southport, Lancashire) was a Member of the European Parliament for the Labour Party for Yorkshire and the Humber, serving between 1996 and 2009. Under the single member constituency system that predates the present proportional representation system, he represented Merseyside West from 1996 to 1999.
He lost his seat in the 2009 European Parliament elections. He is now advisor to President Herman Van Rompuy.
Corbett was educated at Farnborough Road School in Southport, the International School of Geneva and Trinity College, Oxford and later did an external doctorate at the University of Hull. At school, he was captain of the football team and played for the junior team of a Swiss second division club. At university, he was the secretary of the Labour Club and chairman of the student Oxford Committee for Europe. He co-ordinated the Oxford student "Yes" campaign in the 1975 referendum on membership of the European Community. He also skied for Oxford against Cambridge.

Shaun Teale
Shaun Teale (born 10 March 1964 in Southport) is a former English professional footballer and manager. He played as a defender from 1988 until 2004 and was notably part of the League Cup winning team of Aston Villa in 1994.
He also played in the Football League for Bournemouth, Tranmere Rovers, Preston North End and Carlisle United, the Scottish Premier League for Motherwell. As well as having a spell in Hong Kong with Sing Tao he has played at a Non-league level for Weymouth, Southport, Burscough and Northwich Victoria before moving into management with the two latter clubs, as well as having a spell in charge of Chorley.
He was a central defender who joined Bournemouth from non-league Weymouth for £50,000 in 1989. He spent three seasons at Bournemouth before moving to Aston Villa in July 1991. He helped them finish runners-up in the Premier League in 1993 and win the Football League Cup a year later, before losing his place in the first team to Ugo Ehiogu.
He moved from Villa to join Tranmere Rovers for £500,000 in the summer of 1995. He made his Tranmere debut on 12 August 1995 against Wolves and played in 29 league games for Tranmere in his first season with them. Whilst with Rovers he had loan spells with Preston North End and Sing Tao SC, before signing for Motherwell in August 1998.

Eight members of WeAreChangeNC were forced to leave Birkdale Village in Huntersville yesterday. We were only there about fifteen minutes, braving the 27 degrees and gusting winds to simply walk through and hand out a few "Rock Creek Free Press" newspapers and then leave. But we were told by the fascist, jack-booted rent-a-cops, who were stationed on every corner, that we needed permission from the "Leasing Office" to both film and distribute information. So... we went to the Leasing Office, received permission to walk through, and distribute information, by a woman named Conney, although she did decline permission to film (we broke that one) However, upon leaving the Leasing Office we were immediately confronted by another gestapo/steroid injecting member of their elite security force, and he said he just spoke to the property manager, and wanted us to leave immediately. We do respect private property, although we were treated like criminals and sometimes it does require crossing into someone else's "perceived" private space to defend our rights, just as Rosa Parks proved December 1, 1955. Since the government is privatizing so much of what was once public space (that we the taxpayer paid for) we are running out of public places to distribute information. The time is now, we are the change we have been waiting for, and we will be the change we wish to see in the world, WeAreChange!

Due to a window replacement project currently underway, the North County Regional Library will be closed to the public from May 7 through June 9. During the closure, a temporary service outlet will open at Birkdale Village, 16815 Cranlyn Road, Huntersville, NC. Library customers who normally pick up their holds at North County will be able to pick them up at the temporary service outlet in Birkdale Village. The book drops at North County will remain open. The temporary service outlet in Birkdale Village will be a location for North County customers to pick up holds, with a light browsing collection of popular library materials for all ages. There will be no seating, computer access, programs, classes or storytimes. Temporary space is being generously provided by Birkdale Village.

Birkdale is a village and district in the southern part of the conurbation of the town of Southport, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, though historically in Lancashire, in the north-west of England. The village is located on the Irish Sea coast, approximately a mile away from the centre of its now parent town. From 1894 to 1912, Birkdale and the adjoining suburb/village of Ainsdale were administered by Birkdale Urban District Council before becoming part of the county borough of Southport. Until 1 April 1974, Birkdale lay in the traditional borders of the county of Lancashire. As of the 2001 Census, it had a population of 12,265.[1] Birkdale also inspired the name for a new urban mixed use community twelve miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina in Huntersville, North Carolina called Birkdale Village.

Birkdale probably takes its name from two Old Norse words, birki meaning "birch-copse" and dalr meaning "dale" or "valley".[2][3]
Governance[link]
Birkdale is part of the Southport constituency for elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, it is currently represented by the Liberal Democrat MP, John Pugh.
For elections to Sefton Council Birkdale acts as a single electoral ward, it currently has three councillors, their names are Iain Brodie - Browne, Richard Hands, and Simon Shaw, all are members of the Liberal Democrats.
Demography[link]
On the whole it is a wealthy area featuring many large Victorian and Edwardian houses; many of the houses have not yet been broken up into individual flats, and still house families. The area is almost entirely residential, with mainly semi-detached houses as the norm. In the summer of 2003, the average property price was £149,550 (just under £10,000 less than the national average). This has risen to £200,844 in July 2005, more than £20,000 over the national mix-adjusted national average house price. The area has become a popular area with footballers from local Merseyside or Lancashire clubs.
The village centre (still commonly referred to as Birkdale Village) is on Liverpool Road and features a variety of (mostly local) shops. Birkdale railway station is situated on the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network, that links Southport to Liverpool.
Sport[link]
Despite its small size, Birkdale receives a great deal of sporting attention once every few years as it plays host to The Open Championship. It was last played at the Royal Birkdale golf course in July 2008. To lesser fame, the home ground of the Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club on Trafalgar Road is used for county level cricket matches approximately once a year. Southport and Birkdale squash club, also play here and are in the North West Counties Squash League. Red Rum the legendary racehorse who was trained by Ginger McCain had his stables in Upper Aughton Road in Birkdale, while a horse named after the village took part and finished tenth in the 2002 Grand National. The largest junior football club in Southport, Birkdale United AFC, played a crucial part in the footballing education of famous Premiership footballers such as Jack Rodwell, Dominic Matteo, Shaun Teale and Paul Dalglish on their way, still has its home in the village and boasts teams for boys from the age of 6 and girls from the age of 7 through to open age teams. The club was also presented the FA's highest accolade in January 2008, becoming the first FA Charter Community Club in Southport.

Birkdale has three secondary schools, Christ the King Catholic High School, which has around 1200 pupils including sixth form, Birkdale High School which is for boys, and Greenbank High School (in the part of Birkdale known as Hillside) for girls.
Transport[link]
Birkdale is served by frequent buses run by Arriva (to Southport, Formby and Liverpool), Cumfybus, and Stagecoach (to Liverpool and Preston). Birkdale has two stations, Birkdale and Hillside which are on the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network.

- A. J. P. Taylor was born in Birkdale in 1906.
- Marcus Morris was vicar of St James' Church, Lulworth Road, in the 1940s and 50s.
- Richard Corbett MEP lived in Birkdale until the age of 8 and attended Farnborough Road School.
- Everton F.C Midfielder Jack Rodwell is from Birkdale, as is comedian Lee Mack.
- Booker Prize-winning novelist James Gordon Farrell was evacuated to Birkdale during WW2.
- Albert Pierrepoint, the most famous British hangman of modern times, lived in Birkdale in later life and had a tobacconist's shop in Birkdale village.
