World is a common name for the whole of human civilization, specifically human experience, history, or the human condition in general, worldwide, i.e. anywhere on Earth.^[2]

In a philosophical context it may refer to: (1) the whole of the physical Universe, or (2) an ontological world (see world disclosure). In a theological context, world usually refers to the material or the profane sphere, as opposed to the celestial, spiritual, transcendent or sacred. The "end of the world" refers to scenarios of the final end of human history, often in religious contexts.

World history is commonly understood as spanning the major geopolitical developments of about five millennia, from the first civilizations to the present.

World population is the sum of all human populations at any time; similarly, world economy is the sum of the economies of all societies (all countries), especially in the context of globalization. Terms like world championship, gross world product, world flags etc. also imply the sum or combination of all current-day sovereign states.

In terms such as world religion, world language, and world war, world suggests international or intercontinental scope without necessarily implying participation of the entire world.

In terms such as world map and world climate, world is used in the sense detached from human culture or civilization, referring to the planet Earth physically.

Etymology and usage[link]

The English word world comes from the Old English weorold (-uld), weorld, worold (-uld, -eld), a compound of wer "man" and eld "age," which thus means roughly "Age of Man."^[3] The Old English is a reflex of the Common Germanic *wira-alđiz, also reflected in Old Saxon werold, Old High German weralt, Old Frisian warld and Old Norse verǫld (whence the Icelandic veröld).^[4]

The corresponding word in Latin is mundus, literally "clean, elegant", itself a loan translation of Greek cosmos "orderly arrangement." While the Germanic word thus reflects a mythological notion of a "domain of Man" (compare Midgard), presumably as opposed to the divine sphere on the one hand and the chthonic sphere of the underworld on the other, the Greco-Latin term expresses a notion of creation as an act of establishing order out of chaos.

'World' distinguishes the entire planet or population from any particular country or region: world affairs pertain not just to one place but to the whole world, and world history is a field of history that examines events from a global (rather than a national or a regional) perspective. Earth, on the other hand, refers to the planet as a physical entity, and distinguishes it from other planets and physical objects.

'World' can also be used attributively, to mean 'global', 'relating to the whole world', forming usages such as world community or world canonical texts.^[5]

By extension, a 'world' may refer to any planet or heavenly body, especially when it is thought of as inhabited, especially in the context of science fiction or futurology.

'World', in original sense, when qualified, can also refer to a particular domain of human experience.

Philosophy[link]

The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych by Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1503) shows the "garden" of mundane pleasures flanked by Paradise and Hell. The exterior panel shows the world before the appearance of humanity, depicted as a disc enclosed in a sphere.

In philosophy, the term world has several possible meanings. In some contexts, it refers to everything that makes up reality or the physical universe. In others, it can mean have a specific ontological sense (see world disclosure). While clarifying the concept of world has arguably always been among the basic tasks of Western philosophy, this theme appears to have been raised explicitly only at the start of the twentieth century^[6] and has been the subject of continuous debate. The question of what the world is has by no means been settled.

Parmenides

The traditional interpretation of Parmenides' work is that he argued that the every-day perception of reality of the physical world (as described in doxa) is mistaken, and that the reality of the world is 'One Being' (as described in aletheia): an unchanging, ungenerated, indestructible whole.

Plato

In his Allegory of the Cave, Plato distingues between forms and ideas and imagines two distinct worlds : the sensible world and the intelligible world.

Hegel

In Hegel's philosophy of history, the expression Weltgeschichte ist Weltgericht (World History is a tribunal that judges the World) is used to assert the view that History is what judges men, their actions and their opinions. Science is born from the desire to transform the World in relation to Man; its final end is technical application.

Schopenhauer

The World as Will and Representation is the central work of Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer saw the human will as our one window to the world behind the representation; the Kantian thing-in-itself. He believed, therefore, that we could gain knowledge about the thing-in-itself, something Kant said was impossible, since the rest of the relationship between representation and thing-in-itself could be understood by analogy to the relationship between human will and human body.

Wittgenstein

Two definitions that were both put forward in the 1920s, however, suggest the range of available opinion. "The world is everything that is the case," wrote Ludwig Wittgenstein in his influential Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, first published in 1922. This definition would serve as the basis of logical positivism, with its assumption that there is exactly one world, consisting of the totality of facts, regardless of the interpretations that individual people may make of them.

Heidegger

Martin Heidegger, meanwhile, argued that "the surrounding world is different for each of us, and notwithstanding that we move about in a common world".^[7] The world, for Heidegger, was that into which we are always already "thrown" and with which we, as beings-in-the-world, must come to terms. His conception of "world disclosure" was most notably elaborated in his 1927 work Being and Time.

Freud

In response, Freud proposed that we do not move about in a common world, but a common thought process. He believed that all the actions of a person are motivated by one thing: lust. This led to numerous theories about reactionary consciousness.

Other

Some philosophers, often inspired by David Lewis, argue that metaphysical concepts such as possibility, probability and necessity are best analyzed by comparing the world to a range of possible worlds; a view commonly known as modal realism.

Tim Bergling (born 8 September 1989), known professionally as Avicii, Tom Hangs, Ashwin, and Tim Berg, is a Swedish DJ, remixer, and record producer.^[1] His debut single, "Seek Bromance", reached the top 20 in several countries including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Sweden. In 2011, Avicii released "Levels" (sampling the song "Something's Got a Hold On Me" by Etta James), which reached the top ten in Croatia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and topped the charts in Hungary, Norway and Sweden.

In 2011, Avicii was ranked No. 6 on the Top 100 DJs list by DJ Magazine.^[2]

Early life[link]

Tim Bergling was born on 8 September 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Avicii first began his career in Australia working as a SMSF administrator. He was the co founder of BGL which created the widely used software Simplefund. After spending late unfulfilling nights in the office Avicii decided to pursue a career in music. Avicii emerged in the music industry in 2008, when he was 18 years old, compiling a remix of the theme song to the Commodore 64 video game Lazy Jones. This led to his first release on Strike Recordings, entitled "Lazy Lace."

In 2010, Avicii released a collaboration with fellow Swedish DJ John Dahlbäck, titled "Don't Hold Back." He is additionally working on projects with internationally-recognized DJs Tiësto and Sebastian Ingrosso.^[3] While his work is primarily electronic synthetic tracks, EMI released a vocal version of his track "Bromance," titled "Seek Bromance."^[4]

In October 2010, Avicii signed with the European A&R team with EMI Music Publishing. Based in London and New York, EMI is the fourth-largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry, making it one of the "big four" record companies and a member of the RIAA.

In 2011, his collaboration track, "Sunshine", with David Guetta was nominated for a Grammy award under the category for Best Dance Recording.^[5] His tracks Penguin has gone on to be sampled by Leona Lewis. Though there is conflict and controversy regarding Avicii receiving royalties over his creations.

In North America, he played at Palace and The Guelph Concert Theatre in Guelph, Ontario; Club Glow in Washington, D.C.; SET and Nikki Beach in Miami; Club Pacha in New York; Electric Zoo Festival at Randall's Island in New York; Ultra Music Festival in Miami; Electric Daisy Carnival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum; Ruby Skye in San Francisco; Vision Night Club in Chicago; The Guvernment in Toronto; Beta Night Club in Waterloo, Ontario; Stages in Kingston, Ontario; Tokyo Club in Montreal; Club Mansion in London, Ontario, The Majestic in Madison, Wisconsin, Congress Theater in Chicago, Illinois, Wet Republic's Daylife in Las Vegas and The Edmonton Event Centre in Edmonton, among other locations.^[7] His New Year's Eve 2010 party in New York City had to be cancelled due to too many tickets being sold and the venue being overbooked.^[8][9]

The largest crowd Avicii has played for to date was on the main stage at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas on 26 June 2011. On 7 September 2011, Avicii performed at Brock University in St. Catharines, Canada. On 15 September, he played a private set for students of McGill University in Montreal. On 9 September he played at The Necto (nightclub) in Ann Arbor, MI. On 11 September, he performed in Syracuse, NY as part of the annual fall concert series Juice Jam. London, Ontario as part of the O-Week celebration for The University of Western Ontario. On 12 September, he performed at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany, New York to a crowd of mostly University at Albany students. On 22 October 2011 Avicii performed at Bert's Warehouse in Detroit, Michigan. On 28 October, he performed at Petco Park in San Diego, CA. On 29 October 2011 Avicii performed at Pic-a-Chic farm in Bloomington, Indiana as part of a Halloween and Indiana University Homecoming celebration.^[9][10] Avicii also played at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ on 29 October 2011 and at Spring Party Weekend at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY on April 20, 2012.

Avicii headlined at the 2011 Inox Festival in Toulouse, France. Other appearances include Space in Ibiza; Monaco International Clubbing Show at Grimaldi Forum in Monaco; Fabulous Festival in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands; Ms Connexion in Mannheim; Aquarius Zrće in Novalja; La Dune in Toulouse; Illusions at Festivalpark Complex in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic; AF-Borgen in Lund, Sweden; and Mach 1 in Nuremberg.^[7]

Several of his concerts have been recorded for Sirius XM Radio's Trance and Progressive House channel. On 23 October 2010, in support of his world tour, Avicii presented his work in an exclusive hour-long set on Channel 52 of the Electric Area on Sirius XM Radio.^[11]

Australia[link]

December 2011 Avicii was on the line up for the country wide festival Stereosonic. Avicii and Calvin Harris attended homebar Sydney, Australia on 14 January for charity.

Sweden[link]

Avicii performed three shows in his hometown, Stockholm, on 2 and 3 March. The concerts were at Ericsson Globe Arena. During the first concert on the afternoon of Friday 2 March, a temporary platform built for the audience collapsed. A total of 26 people were sent to the hospital, and one 17-year old teenage girl suffered a severe concussion. As a result of the accident, the second concert, scheduled for Friday evening, was canceled. A new platform was built in hope that the Saturday evening concert could continue.^[12]

South Africa[link]

Avicii completed a tour of South Africa in 2012, performing in three different cities over two days. The first show was at Wave House in Durban on 30 March, where he played at 22:00. The second show was at Wild Waters in Johannesburg on 31 March. The venue plays host to South Africa's premier outdoor music festival, H2O. Avicii played the "sunset set" at 17:00 in perfect weather conditions to a fantastic crowd. After playing for 1 hour and 30 minutes, he flew to Cape Town to play the midnight set at Thunder City, where he played for 2 hours and 45 minutes to an even more fantastic crowd. Various South African DJ's accompanied him on the tour, including DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Pascal & Pearce and Goldfish.

Avicii's most notable song has been the single "Levels" which was released officially 28 Oct 2011. The song had already been a major hit in the EDM world all through 2011 but after its official release it became a huge mainstream hit giving Avicii and the EDM movement even greater notoriety. The song was written by Avicii, Ash Pournouri, and an unidentified third party, and contains a vocal sample from the 1962 gospel-inspired "Something's Got a Hold on Me" by Etta James. The same vocal sample was used first by Pretty Lights in his song "Finally Moving" in 2006. This sample was also used by Flo Rida in his single "Good Feeling (song)," which was produced by Avicii, and holds a close resemblance to his single Levels. This song (levels) has been remixed by several artists, including Skrillex.

On 23 March 2012, Avicii's unsigned single "Last Dance" was previewed on Pete Tong's show on BBC Radio 1. At Ultra Music Festival 2012 he played a teaser of his remix of Ruth-Anne's "All You Need Is Love". Also, Avicii played two new remixes, Madonna's "Girl Gone Wild" titled "Avicii vs Madonna – Girl Gone Wild (Avicii's UMF Remix) and Avicii vs Lenny Kravitz – Superlove (Avicii's Space Mix).

He is set to play one of the largest shows by a DJ at The O2 arena (London) where the date is billed simply as Avicii in London
