Antarctic Treaty: Lessons for climate solutions
Filmed at Paradise Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula in front of an Almirante Brown Station, Steven Blumenfeld discusses the importance of the Antarctic Treaty with Polar Explorer Robert Swan OBE (the first man in history to have walked to both the North and South Poles) during the International Antarctic Treaty Expedition in November 2009. In the lead up to the critical COP-15 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Steven explains how the Antarctic Treaty can be used as a model for international cooperation in which common goals and objectives are used to build a platform over seemingly irreconcilable issues that may exist below. It is imperative that we focus our energy on the mutual goals of nations and citizens to ensure a sustainable course of action, rather than allowing disputes related to the implementation of those goals to keep us on a course for disaster. Signing of Antarctic Treaty
Antarctica is the only continent in the world without a native human population or sovereignty. Instead, it is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System. The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington on 1 December 1959 by the twelve countries whose scientists had been active in and around Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-58. It entered into force in 1961 and has since been acceded to by many other nations. The total number of Parties to the Treaty is now 50.

StreamServe | 2041 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty
2041 was founded by polar explorer, environmental leader and public speaker Robert Swan, OBE, the first person in history to walk to both the North and South poles. Swan has dedicated his life to the preservation of Antarctica by the promotion of recycling, renewable energy and sustainability to combat the effects of climate change. In the year 2041 the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty could potentially be modified or amended. Our aim is to work towards the continuing protection of the Antarctic Treaty so that the last great wilderness on earth is never exploited. StreamServe supports 2041 and has sponsored a student to travel to Antartica with Robert and provide live blogs during this journey.

Teodor Negoita - APECS Mentor Remembered
In Memoriam
Teodor Gheorghe Negoita – scientist, polar explorer and speologist, born on the 27th of September 1946, in Sascut, Bacau Country, Romania. He graduated from the High-Bourding School and the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry in Iasi, Romania (1973), diplomed engineer, Ph.D in chemistry, initiator of the Romanian Program of Polar Research (1987), participant in more than 15 expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica, the first Romanian that reached the North Pole (1995), representative of Romania in the Antarctic Treaty (since 1997), the Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research and the Council of the Managers of the National Antarctic Programs (since 1998).
Dr Teodor Gh. Negoita set up the first Romanian Station of Polar Scientific Research “Law-Racovita”, Australia-Romania, Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica (2006). He was also a dear mentor to APECS and many graduate students through the years.
"Failure could never make me give up my enthusiasm. My admiration for the tempting and mysterious white waste of desert snow and ice remained thoroughly untouched to me. Meanwhile, in my country, my work had been a great draw for passionate people in universities people in universities and research institutes; it would have been unjust that they should not penetrate into the depths of this marvelous world !"
- Teodor Gh. Negoita – "Romanian Embassy in Antarctica Law-Racovita Station", 2006
We thank Andreia Magdalin, one of Dr. Negoita's students, for this article and special tribute video.

Antarctica Expedition November 2009 - Robert Swan's 2041 - Part1
Robert Swan's 2041 Antarctica Expedition. 47 students and business leaders from 16 nations on the Inspire Antarctic Treaty Expedition of November 2009. About the preservation of Antarctica and the climate as a whole. How the Antarctic Treaty protects Antarctic from drilling and mining for its possible (fossil) resources. The treaty serves as a leading example of how nations can set aside differences and interests for a common goal: the environment. In the year 2041 this treaty will come up for review and Antarctica will be up for grabs. Promotion of renewable energy can result in a situation where drilling for fossil resources won't make any (economical) sense and Antarctica will remain the last preserved wilderness on earth. Moreover it can abate global warming and the effects it has on parts of Antarctica where temperatures are increasing such as the Peninsula.
