The alliance between the Central Powers of World War 1 doesn't seem to be as strong anymore. The Bulgarians, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany are following their own goals without really helping out the other. Erich von Falkenhayn is obsessed with Verdun, Conrad von Hötzendorf wants to go on the offensive again after the 5th Battle of the Isonzo and the Bulgarians don't have the resources to pursue their own goals. At the same time the unrestricted submarine warfare of the Germans is taking a deadly toll.

Even though he was called "the thick headed Croat" no southern Slav had ever achieved the rank of Field Marshal before Svetozar Borojevic von Bojna. During World War 1 he was probably the best general of the Habsburg Empire and his deeds during the Carpathian campaign and especially the defence against the Italians at the Isonzo River made him popular and earned him another nickname: Lion of the Isonzo.

Patrizio Roversi, turista per caso in Slovenia, questa volta si trova sulle sponde del fiume Isonzo. Tra Slovenia e Italia, l'Isonzo è un fiume storico, legato alla memoria della Prima Guerra Mondiale, confine naturale tra le fazioni avversarie. L'Isonzo sbocca nel Mar Adriatico attorno a Monfalcone, tutta la zona del Parco Naturale del Tricorno (Triglav, in sloveno) è un'area protetta. Già il colore dell'acqua, così azzurra, è di per sé un patrimonio naturale! Si deve al calcare delle Alpi Giulie, che si combina con gli altri minerali dell'acqua. Un luogo molto bello dove riposarsi, ma anche dove fare sport: con le sue correnti l'Isonzo è molto adatto al rafting in kayak. Patrizio lo proverà?

Soča
The Soča (pronounced [ˈsoːtʃa] in Slovene) or Isonzo (pronounced [iˈzontso] in Italian) (other names Friulian: Lusinç, archaic German: Sontig, Latin: Aesontius or Isontius) is a 138-kilometre (86 mi) long river that flows through western Slovenia (96 kilometres or 60 miles) and northeastern Italy (43 kilometres or 27 miles).
An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres (2,874 ft). The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed by the Solkan Bridge), and Gorizia, entering the Adriatic Sea close to the town of Monfalcone. It has a nival-pluvial regime in its upper course and pluvial-nival in its lower course.
Prior to the First World War the river formed part of the border between Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and during that conflict was the scene of bitter fighting between the two countries, culminating in the Battle of Caporetto in 1917.

Patrizio Roversi, turista per caso in Slovenia, questa volta si trova sulle sponde del fiume Isonzo. Tra Slovenia e Italia, l'Isonzo è un fiume storico, legato alla memoria della Prima Guerra Mondiale, confine naturale tra le fazioni avversarie. L'Isonzo sbocca nel Mar Adriatico attorno a Monfalcone, tutta la zona del Parco Naturale del Tricorno (Triglav, in sloveno) è un'area protetta. Già il colore dell'acqua, così azzurra, è di per sé un patrimonio naturale! Si deve al calcare delle Alpi Giulie, che si combina con gli altri minerali dell'acqua. Un luogo molto bello dove riposarsi, ma anche dove fare sport: con le sue correnti l'Isonzo è molto adatto al rafting in kayak. The Bulgarians, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany are following their own goals without really helping out the other. Erich von Falkenhayn is obsessed with Verdun, Conrad von Hötzendorf wants to go on the offensive again after the 5th Battle of the Isonzo and the Bulgarians don't have the resources to pursue their own goals. At the same time the unrestricted submarine warfare of the Germans is taking a deadly toll.

Patrizio Roversi, turista per caso in Slovenia, questa volta si trova sulle sponde del fiume Isonzo. Tra Slovenia e Italia, l'Isonzo è un fiume storico, legato alla memoria della Prima Guerra Mondiale, confine naturale tra le fazioni avversarie. L'Isonzo sbocca nel Mar Adriatico attorno a Monfalcone, tutta la zona del Parco Naturale del Tricorno (Triglav, in sloveno) è un'area protetta. Già il colore dell'acqua, così azzurra, è di per sé un patrimonio naturale! Si deve al calcare delle Alpi Giulie, che si combina con gli altri minerali dell'acqua. Un luogo molto bello dove riposarsi, ma anche dove fare sport: con le sue correnti l'Isonzo è molto adatto al rafting in kayak. Patrizio lo proverà?

With the completion of this railroad, the railway network connected Vienna and Central Europe with the Adriatic regions of the K and K monarchy. On this journey we have travelled on the youngest of the ‘steam ladies’ of the Ljubljana Railway Museum. The 33-037 weighs a hundred and thirty six tons, is twenty three metres long and its tender can take nine tons of coal. The Bohinj Museum Train is a fabulous experience. Not one to be missed!

Each summer, in Jesenice in the north of today’s EU Member State of Slovenia,an historical steam train travels through the Triglav National Park and both the Bača and Soča Valleys, to Nova Gorica.The first stop is Bled Jezero. Several actors are on the train, dressed as conductors in the uniforms of the old empire, a special touch that adds to the wonderful atmosphere. The train station is sited above a hollowed-out glacier that later became Bled Lake, one of the warmest lakes in the Alps. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy required a second railway connection between Vienna and Trieste. Its planning took more than thirty years and it took five years to construct: tunnels were blasted out of the rock, narrow valleys used to their best advantage, and amazing bridges constructed. With the completion of this railroad, the railway network connected Vienna and Central Europe with the Adriatic regions of the K and K monarchy. On this journey we have travelled on the youngest of the ‘steam ladies’ of the Ljubljana Railway Museum. The 33-037 weighs a hundred and thirty six tons, is twenty three metres long and its tender can take nine tons of coal. The Bohinj Museum Train is a fabulous experience. Not one to be missed!

This, the best known and most well equipped ski resort in Slovenia, is growing in popularity each year, including the summer months.The first mountain massifs of the Julian Alps reflect in the small Lake Jansa which lies just beyond Kranjska Gora en route to the Vrsic Pass. The high rising Slovenian Alps are one of the most little known yet most beautiful alpine regions in Europe, a mysterious, unspoiled landscape and the realm of the zlatorog, a goat with golden horns! In this natural paradise, Europe’s wildest and most romantic river is born, the Soca, the ‘emerald’ river. Geologically, the landscape of the Upper Soca is relatively young and rugged with deep cut valleys and few flat areas. Its characteristic appearance was formed by the action of a glacier and water erosion formed a valley. Near Bovec, the Koritnica Valley begins and ascends to Italy’s, Passo Del Predil. A tranquil valley end with wonderful views and a few small villages which are romantic in summer but that can be treacherous in winter. Each summer an historic steam train travels through the Triglav National Park and both the Baca and Soca Valleys to Nova Gorica, a wonderful journey on a slow train through a green and fertile landscape. The Triglav National Park impresses with its beautiful, contrasting scenery, bare mountains, deep valleys, wild water, blossoming alpine flowers, high mountains as well as breathtaking waterfalls and glacial lakes.
