Battle for the California Desert: Why is the Government Driving Folks off Their Land?
The Antelope Valley is a vast patch of desert on the outskirts of Los Angeles County, and a segment of the few rugged individualists who live out there increasingly are finding themselves the targets of armed raids from local code enforcement agents, who've assembled into task forces called Nuisance Abatement Teams (NATs). The plight of the Valley's desert dwellers made regional headlines when county officials ordered the destruction of Phonehenge: a towering, colorful castle constructed out of telephone poles by retired phone technician Kim Fahey. Fahey was imprisoned and charged with several misdemeanors. But Fahey is just one of many who've been targeted by the NATs, which were assembled at the request of County Supervisor Mike Antonovich in 2006. LA Weekly reporter Mars Melnicoff wrote an in-depth article in which she exposed the county's tactic of badgering residents with minor, but costly, code violations until they face little choice but to vacate the land altogether. "They're picking on the the people who are the most defenseless and have the least resources," says Melnicoff. Reason.tv collaborated with Melnicoff to talk with some of the NAT's targets, such as retired veteran Joey Gallo, who might face homelessness if he's forced to leave his house, and local pastor Oscar Castaneda, who says he's already given up the fight and is in the process of moving off the land he and his wife have lived on for 22 years. And, while Antonovich declined an interview, we did ...

African beetles beat the heat in the Sahara desert - BBC wildlife
Enter the amazing and surprising world of the Namib Desert. This, alongside other African deserts, where water is an unexpected source of energy. When the rains do arrive, plants appear as if by magic, and beetles perform elegant handstands to drink the tiny specs of morning dew that ensure their survival in the blistering heat. From the BBC.

Animals trek from distant locales just to engage one of the desert's many tendrils of death. The hot sun? The barren landscape? The lack of water? Desert Song
I grew up in Southern Utah, in the reddesert of the Southwestern United States, what is known as the Colorado Plateau (Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Northwestern New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado). This has always been my spiritual home. Living away from the desert there I've come to miss it greatly. I put this together to watch when I am missing my home too much and it helps me remember the smell of sage, pinion, and dry desert wind, the peaceful silence, and the vibrant colors of the desert just before a storm. For all the red desert lovers out there. Music is "Canyon People" by R. Carlos Nakai off his "Canyon Trilogy" album.

6. The Living Planet - The Baking Deserts
Broadcast 1 March 1984, the next instalment explores the world of deserts. It begins in the largest, the Sahara, where the highest land temperatures have been recorded. Rock paintings depict creatures such as giraffes and antelopes, suggesting that at one point there was enough vegetation to support them. Now, such life has all but disappeared, with the exception of the cypress, whose roots find water deep underground. Since the night brings low temperatures, many of the creatures that live there are nocturnal. They include Fennec Foxes, geckos, jerboas and caracals. A scorpion is shown fighting a black widow spider. During the day, the desert belongs to the reptiles, which rely on the sun to warm their bodies. The Sonoran Desert is home to the Gila monster, one of the two poisonous lizards. By mid-afternoon, it's so hot that even reptiles must escape the sun's rays. However, some birds have developed methods for keeping cool. The sandgrouse evaporates moisture by fluttering its throat, while the road runner also uses its tail as a parasol. Plants that are best adapted to the habitat are the creosote bush and cacti, of which the saguaro is one of the biggest. The nomadic Tuareg people cross the Sahara from one side to the other — but can't do so unaided. They rely on the camel for transportation, as much as it needs them to periodically dig for water. Despite this, it is one of the best adapted desert animals: it can go without water for ten times as long as a man.

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.
The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.
A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (http://bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.
Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Earth
Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them.
HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Desert Animals - The Living Desert
California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com offers a guide to desert animals at the Living Desert in this episode of "California Travel Tips." The Living Desert zoo in Palm Desert is home to some of the most common desert animals found in North America. Plan on at least a full day to enjoy this gorgeous 1200 acre park. You'll spot a large number of animals founds here in our California desert, from the adorable bobcat and crafty coyote, to the majestic mountain lion. Be sure to arrive early in the morning if you want to see the animals in action. By mid-day, many have retired to their burrows for a nap and reprieve from the intense desert heat. A highlight for me was a glimpse at two endangered species — the desert bighorn sheep, found in the rocky mountains of California, and the gorgeous Mexican wolf, once found throughout the Southwest. This is also one of the few places where you'll find the rare and tiny desert pupfish, which can survive in waters over 100 degrees. If you're into birdwatching, this is a great place to see some beautiful desert birds up close, from the roadrunner and hummingbird to the golden eagle and Great Horned Owl. Look up in the sky and you may spot a Harris Hawk coming down for a landing. I hope you've enjoyed this quick look at the animals of the Living Desert. Just don't forget to dress for the hot Palm Springs weather, bringing along plenty of water, sunscreen, and — of course!— a camera. The Living Desert 47-900 ...
