PVC Irrigation System, Automatic Water Timers, and Rain Barrel System
This video highlights my gardens around the house. There are several because I'm land-locked and use anywhere I can get sunlight. The video goes over the 6 barrel, 330 gallon rain barrel system along with the PVC drip irrigation system that waters the garden. It also discusses the automatic water timer used to water the garden automatically.

America's Dead Sea
Deep in the desert of southern California sits one of the worst environmental sites in America—a former tourist destination that has turned into a toxic soup: the Salton Sea.
The sea was born by accident 100 years ago, when the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal; for the next two years the entire volume of the river flowed into the Salton Sink, one of the lowest places on Earth. The new lake became a major tourist attraction, with resort towns springing up along its shores. Yet with no outflow, and with agricultural runoff serving as its only inflow, the sea’s waters grew increasingly toxic. Farm chemicals and ever-increasing salinity caused massive fish and bird die-offs. Use of the sea for recreational activities plummeted, and by the 1980s its tourist towns were all but abandoned.
The skeletons of these structures are still there; ghost towns encrusted in salt. California officials acknowledge that if billions of dollars are not spent to save it, the sea could shrink another 60 percent in the next 20 years, exposing soil contaminated with arsenic and other cancerous chemicals to strong winds. Should that dust become airborne, it would blow across much of southern California, creating an environmental calamity.

DamNation | Trailer
Ninety-nine years after Olympic National Park’s Elwha River was illegally dammed, wild Chinook salmon still instinctively gather at the foot of the lower dam as if they sense a change in the current. Upstream, the usual low rumble of antique turbines generating electricity has faded, and the piercing sound of an excavator-mounted jackhammer reverberates off the 210-foot tall Glines Canyon Dam. De-construction crews have begun the painstaking process of chipping away at its mossy, con-caved facade. This moment marks the beginning of the largest dam removal in US history, unveiling the best opportunity for wild salmon recovery in the Country.
Dam removal is no longer the work of a fictional Monkey Wrench Gang. It’s real, upon us, a cornerstone of the modern environmental and cultural movements. The benefits from dams, including hydropower, urban water supply, irrigation, and flood protection have played a critical role in the development of the United States—but river ecosystems and Native American heritage suffered greatly. Now, many of these antiquated relics of the industrial revolution are classified as public safety hazards by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The short-sighted development of a bygone era is growing more prevalent—In many cases, the high cost of retrofitting an aging dam, and meeting current environmental standards has led to a surprising shift in thinking: Dam owners, impacted communities, and politicians are now reevaluating the usefulness of certain dams and often advocating for decommissioning and removal. Some call it a movement, others call it a generational shift in values. Regardless of what it’s dubbed, an undeniable momentum behind river restoration has begun.
DamNation is a collection of empassioned voices and spirited stories from the people entrenched on both sides of this devisive issue. Examining the history and controversy behind current and proposed dam removal projects, DamNation presents a dynamic perspective on Man’s attempt to harness and control the power of water at the expense of nature. Nothing lasts forever, not even the concrete monoliths that have impounded America’s free flowing rivers in the name of “progress” for ages. —BK

Senegal, Africa, Through My Eyes
Wow, I had no idea that this many people would watch this video. The other day it screened twice in front of about 2,000 people at the Snoqualmie Casino, WA. What an addictive feeling it was, seeing people teared up and moved.
Honestly, this video is pretty light weight, because it doesn't truly exemplify the issues that we can prevent. I didn't choose to talk about the starving fly children that you always see on TV and then ignore, or their irrigation problems, wells, or how they burn their fields just so they can fertilize the soil and plant new agriculture.
This video is about happiness.
It's now been 6 months since I have been to Africa. I miss it very much, because as the days count, I continually forget the impact it has in my life. When I plan my vacations to Hawaii, when I am upset because Urban Outfitters doesn't have a size Medium and I have to go to another store that's 15 minutes away, when my skis need waxing, when a season of Dexter or Entourage is over, when my bread from Trader Joes goes bad after 4 days I have to go exchange it... the frustrations we face aren't equatable, and are no where near as life threatening as what the people I met faced.
One could argue, we aren't less happy, but I think we are more frustrated.
I made this video so I could remember, and so others who have no idea what it feels like may be able to empathize, and smile at the same time.

Crops (Gerco de Ruijter)
CROPS is a stopmotion film on centre pivot irrigation in the USA.
Long water-sprinkler arms rotate around a central pivot, irrigating circular fields of verdant crops in desert or semiarid environments. Often a well, located at the centre of the circle, pumps water up from vast aquifers in the rock formations below, or Rio Grande water is canalized and redirected into the deserts feeding the well. Once the Rio Grande reaches Mexico, it's riverbed has dried.
This trailer was made using 1000 circles cropped in Google Earth.
It is the starting point for a larger project to be released this year.
Score by Michel Banabila.
