TV9 - "Mysore Dasara 2011" - "Dasara Darbar" Srikanta Datta Wadeyar Puja In Mysore Palace - 3.............! The famed Mysore Dasara that showcases the region's rich culture, tradition, pomp and pageantry began here Wednesday and will go on for the next nine days. Hundreds of people from this city of palaces, about 130 km from Bangalore, from different parts of the country and several foreigners gathered atop the Chamundi Hills to usher in the nine-day festival (also known as Dussehra) to mark the victory of good over evil. The festivities began with the worshipping of Hindu goddess Chamundeshwari atop the hill by Pejawar seer Sri Vishwesha Tirtha in the presence of Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda. Legend has it that Chamundeshwari, a reincarnation of Durga, consort of Lord Shiva, eliminated demon Mahishasura after 10 days of fierce battle. The 10th day is celebrated as Vijayadashami (day of Victory). On Vijayadashami (Oct 6), the Mysore Dasara will conclude with 'Jumboo Savari', a procession of 12 caparisoned elephants with the lead tusker Balarama carrying the idol of Chamundeshwari placed in the 750-kg golden 'howdah' (seat). Balarama, weighing around 5000 kg, will be carrying the 'howdah' for the 13th time. This is the 401st Dasara festivities in Mysore. The festivities recreate the aura of the glorious Vijayanagara Empire and the Wodeyar dynasty that ruled Mysore for over 300 years. Over the next 10 days, Mysore will be a beehive of cultural and sports activities ...

Mysore Dasara - At it's best (1968 )
Any native of Mysore born during late 1970s and early 1980s surely will have heard from their grannies about the pomp and splendor of the Dasara during 60s. Belonging to such a genre, I stumbled over a video of Mysore Dasara filmed in 1968. No doubt, that the present Dasara is a colorful event as it used to be but the older one is matchless in terms of discipline and presentability!!! Thats my view though!!!

MYSORE DASARA
Mysore Dasara (Kannada: ಮೈಸೂರು ದಸರ) is the Nadahabba (state-festival) of the state of Karnataka. It is also called Navaratri (Nava-ratri = nine-nights) and is a 10-day festival with the last day being Vijayadashami, the most auspicious day of Dasara. Dasara usually falls in the month of September or October. According to a legend, Vijayadashami denotes the victory of truth over evil and was the day when the Hindu Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura is the demon from whose name; the name Mysore has been derived. The city of Mysore has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival and the festivities there are an elaborate affair, attracting a large audience including foreigners. The Dasara festival completed 400th anniversary in year 2010[2].

TV9 - "Mysore Dasara 2012" : This Dasara zing is back in Mysore
TV9 - "Mysore Dasara 2012" : This Dasara zing is back in Mysore...! On Tuesday as Jagadish Shettar arrived atop Chamundi Hills to join Gnana Yogashrama seer Siddeshwara Swami to launch Dasara 2012, the Karnataka CM was smiling reflecting the confidence the stakeholders have regained this Dasara festival. With Cauvery agitation subsiding and rain lashing in the Cauvery river basin, the zing is back in the Royal City and Shettar's exuberance atop Chamundi Hills said it all. "I'm very happy to be in Mysore" he told the seer as the Naada Habba was launched and Mysore is reverberating with music and dance, and tourists are indulging. On the opening day, the spin-offs of Dasara were starkly visible: The city roads were crowded, tourists spots alive with visitors and festivity hung heavy in the air. Flow to the Mysore Zoo was above normal and it is more than what was registered on the first day of Dasara 2011. "Since three days, the zoo is hit by visitors. We've logged more number of tourists on Day-1 compared to last year," sources stated indicating the tourists interest in Mysore. At the Mysore Palace, travelers were milling immersing in the royal opulence. The CM's happiness spilled over as he went to launch Dasara magic show when he donned a robe and a magic wand and did some magical act. Some two months back when the preparations for the festivities started, the state's 145 taluks were drought hit. Later came the Cauvery crisis. Now, our apprehensions have been washed away ...

TV9 - "Mysore Dasara 2012" : Jumbo squad busy in practice session With Explosions...! Even as it is still undecided as to which pachyderm will carry the howdah (Ambari) during the famous Jambu Savari of Mysore Dasara the Forest Department has decided to train five of the six male pachyderms in this direction. On Monday Balaram was given an exercise by placing a sand bag weighing 300 kg and a howdah made of iron on his back. The elephants were also taken out on the same route of the Dasara procession. Balarama was flanked by Abhimanyu, Srirama Gajendra, Arjuna and Vijaya. As the elephant which will be in the lead in Dasara will have to carry the golden howdah weighing 750, Balarama is being trained and the weight he will have to carry will be gradually increased each day. TV9 - "Mysore Dasara 2012" : Wadiyar performs Ayudha Puja to royal arms...! The Mysore Royal family had always played a significant role in the rituals and festivities, even today the family members performed the Ayudha Pooja inside the courtyard of the palace. This was followed by the procession to the Bhuveneswari temple with the weapons are carried in a golden planquin. The initial nine days saw the private durbar of the Mysore Royal family held to commemorate Dasara festivities, the genesis of which was traced to the celebrations observed by the Vijayanagar emperors in Hampi. The baton was passed to the Wadiyars who kept alive the tradition with customary rituals adding a dash of colour with the caprisoned elephants, horses, and soldiers participating in the pooja celebrations. In the past, the maharaja used to ascend the royal throne on all the nine days and hold a durbar while the subjects used to pay their obeisance to the ruler. On the Mahanavami or Ninth day, 32 weapons were taken on a procession to temple inside the Palace premises for Ayudha Pooja. Tomorrow Mr Wadiyar will compete his ...
