The 9th Annual Platsis Symposium on the Greek Legacy: "Why Teach Thucydides?"
Sunday, November 7, 2010 Rackham Auditorium The symposium addressed ways in which Thucydides matters in liberal arts education today. It featured two distinguished scholars of Thucydides who have also played significant public roles: W. Robert. Connor, who besides his scholarly work on Thucydides and other Greek historians has been director of the National Humanities Center and president of the Teagle Foundation, and Clifford Orwin, Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Toronto, who has written The Humanity of Thucydides and is a regular contributor to Canada's national newspaper, The Globe and Mail. We also had some local respondents (Prof. Sara Forsdyke and Prof. Arlene Saxonhouse), and many first-year students from Classical Civilization 101 and Great Books 191 were present to ask the questions older people often avoid. This year's symposium was also selected to honor Professor H. Don Cameron's dedicated years of teaching Thucydides and his retirement.

Why 'ancient' Thucydides described a mediaeval war?
During the Peloponnesian war Thucydides was in command of the Athenian fleet, albeit unsuccessfully. He was subsequently banished from Athens for 20 years. He wrote his famous tractate during his sojourn in Thracia. Thucydides had received amnesty near the end of the war; he returned to Athens and died shortly afterwards. Historical tradition trusts Thucydides in his descriptions of military events, considering him an eyewitness and a participant. Thucydides himself writes the following: I was writing down the events witnessed by myself as well as what I had heard from others, after as meticulous a study of each fact as circumstances allowed. The Thucydides eclipse triad is a very substantial argument proving that the History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides couldn't have been written earlier than the 11th century ad

Real Agile: How Real Tests Lead to Real Progress
Unit tests are programmer's best friend, but relying on them exclusively gives an illusion of overall system integrity. At some level, we need to verify how our components integrate and ensure unexpected behavior does not creep in when we shift the application into the target runtime. It all amounts to whether your application is providing the end user what he or she is really needs (tire swing) instead of what anyone thinks they need. How can we save our users from frustration, keep the fail whale at bay and communicate with stakeholders that the requirements are being met?
We'll show you how the Arquillian testing platform can give you these guarantees by driving agile development. We'll explore the concepts of BDD and ATDD together using a powerful trio of testing frameworks: Arquillian, WebDriver and Thucydides. Rather than just test cases, you'll build higher-level, end-to-end functional behavior using reusable web test components and following a clear "given, when, then" perspective. The result: cleaner, clearer tests that both validate your requirements and document your system behavior.
Testing behaviors has never been so easy, and so real! If you care about quality of your software you definitely shouldn't miss this talk!

Three eclipses described by the ancient Thucydides were medieval?
Scaligerian history tries to convince us that Thucydides was born in approximately 460 bc, or 456 to 451 bc, and died around 396 bc He was a wealthy aristocrat and politician from Athens. Thucydides himself writes the following: I was writing down the events witnessed by myself as well as what I had heard from others, after as meticulous a study of each fact as circumstances allowed I have survived the entire war understood it, and studied it attentively. The Thucydides eclipse triad is a very substantial argument proving that the History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides couldnt have been written earlier than the 11th century ad It is most improbable that the triad is a fantasy of the author, since in that case a fitting astronomical solution would most probably have been nonexistent. It is also hard to consider the eclipses an apocryphal part of the ancient text, since they fit the consecutive and detailed narration incredibly well.
