ANDRE MASSON (2)
Andre Masson (1896-1987) was one of the major early French Surrealist painters. A close friend of Andre Breton, Joan Miro and Max Ernst, he joined the Surrealist movement in the early 20s, then disassociated with it in the early 30s, focusing instead on the human condition - the fundamental impulses of love and hatred - and reacting to the Spanish Civil War. In the early 40s, Masson moved to America and became interested in mythical imagery. Many of his paintings from this period show a focus on African American and Native American myths, and the style of his expression and brushwork influenced many young American painters. Although Masson is most often associated with Surrealism, his work evades definition through any one twentieth-century movement. In some ways, the identification with Surrealism has been confusing. Not only has it focussed attention on a partial aspect of his career, but has obscured profound differences between them. If it is true that some of his finest paintings were produced when he was closest to Surrealism, it is also the case that they were generated by deep tensions: as he wrote himself, "Painful contradictions are sometimes the source of the greatest riches". Masson had especially close relations throughout his life with poets and writers, and they in turn responded to the qualities in his work that spoke to their shared concerns. But that is not to say that he was a literary painter. Andre Breton, for instance, celebrated the chemistry of the ...

André Masson
André-Aimé-René Masson (January 4, 1896 -- October 28, 1987) was a French artist. Masson was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, near Senlis in Picardy, but was brought up in Belgium. He studied art in Brussels and Paris. He fought for France in World War I and was seriously injured. Masson's early works display an interest in cubism. He later became associated with surrealism, and he was one of the most enthusiastic employers of automatic drawing, making a number of automatic works in pen and ink. Masson would often force himself to work under strict conditions, for example, after long periods of time without food or sleep, or under the influence of drugs. He believed forcing himself into a reduced state of consciousness would help his art be free from rational control, and hence get closer to the workings of his subconscious mind. From around 1926 he experimented by throwing sand and glue onto canvas and making oil paintings based around the shapes that formed. By the end of the 1920s, however, he was finding automatism rather restricting, and he left the surrealist movement and turned instead to a more structured style, often producing works with a violent or erotic theme, and making a number of paintings in reaction to the Spanish Civil War (he associated once more with the surrealists at the end of the 1930s). André Masson drew the cover of the first issue of Georges Bataille's review, Acéphale, in 1936, and participated in all its issues until 1939. Under the German ...

Jazz Musicians - Black is Beautiful
Go to www.blackisbeautifulamsterdam.nl for more information. Also visit the research lab! The entertainers in this drawing by John Raedecker are probably musicians. The drawing was made after a visit to Bal Nègre, a Caribbean club in Paris where people danced to jazz music. This work by Jan Wiegers was also inspired by the Bal Nègre. The Bal quickly became a meeting place for coloured Parisians such as people from the Caribbeans, Africans and Afro-Americans. The Bal also became a favourite haunt and a source of inspiration for many famous European artists and writers. Piet Mondriaan and Charley Toorop discovered the bar too. The former in particular is said to have gone there almost every day because he loved Negro music and Negro dancing so much. Avant-garde artists like Pablo Picasso, André Masson, Alexander Calder and Man Ray went there too. Black music was not only hot in Paris. In the Netherlands too, jazz clubs, like the Negro Kit Kat club, Negro Palace, Negro Melody Club, the Shim Sham Negro Club and Mephisto shot up like mushrooms in the 1930s. The clubs advertised with World famous Negro solo players. A cosmopolitan attraction. or New Yorks Negro area of Harlem comes to Rotterdam. or Harlem in Amsterdam, Coloured Hot trio at Neutraal. Star drummer says, gimme Holland! Artists were inspired by black jazz musicians here as well. In the 1930s Nola Hatterman made this painting entitled The band of Negro players. Amsterdam mayor Van der Vlugt soon shut down many of ...

Man Ray - Résurrection des Mannequins
In 1938, the writer André Breton (1896-1966) and poet Paul Éluard (1895-1952) organized the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme at the Galerie Beaux-Arts in Paris. Each of fifteen artists were given a dressmaker's mannequin as their canvas and encouraged to transform the figure in any way they desired. The artists included (in order of appearance in this video) Salvador Dalí, Óscar Dominguez, Marcel Duchamp, Léo Malet, André Masson, Joan Miró, Wolfgang Paalen, Kurt Seligmann, Yves Tanguy, Marcel Jean, Max Ernst, Espinoza, Maurice Henry, Sonia Mossé, and Man Ray. Man Ray organized the lighting and photographed the show. Twenty-eight years later, he printed and published a limited edition of these photographs, along with a descriptive text, under the title Résurrection des mannequins. Man Ray designed the binding and pursuaded the great surrealist printer Guy Lévis Mano to design and print the pages. Princeton's copy is inscribed by Man Ray to his friend William Copley (1919-1996). In 1947, Copley opened a Los Angeles gallery dedicated to the Surrealists and to Man Ray's work in particular. When nothing sold, he closed the gallery, purchasing much of the art for his own private collection. In 1979, Copley sold this collection for $6.7 million, at the time the highest auction sale of a single owner's collection in the United States. Music by Eno/Budd, 'Wind in Lonely Fences'.

ruin-there the air hums concept by Sarah Walko Pop-Up Art Event January 22, 2011 curated by Malado Baldwin performance by damali abrams wearable sculptures by Sarah Walko _______________________________ statement by Sarah Walko: ruin -- there the air hums (Andre Masson) damali abrams and Sarah Walko Language is not the only source of communication and it is often language in fact that can tangle communication. In this piece we combined personal journal entries with a Wyandot Native American myth the Legends of the Pleiades: The Singing Maidens, to form a narrative that damali will communicate in her performance without using words. Combining the very personal and present with the overarching old myth using only non verbal communication and sounds examines the push and pull and differing methods of filtering words to thought to wisdom. It also examines a struggle of trying to communicate something very deeply known and felt through barriers. I need the birds to speak to the crowd - Paul Eluard
