Beltane Fire Festival 2011, Calton Hill, Edinburgh
The Beltane Fire Festival is an annual celebration of the arrival of summer based on pagan rituals. It takes place during the night between 30th April and 1st May. In this fiery and rhythmic event, the May Queen kills Winter and revives him as Summer, who then is reunited with her in a kiss. Hordes of fertility demons celebrate the marriage with fire, drums and dance. Looking out of the window, I have to say the Scottish weather does not seem to be overly impressed by this spirited invocation of summer - nonetheless a great spectacle! Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill in Edinburgh
This year's Beltane Fire Festival on Edinburgh's Calton Hill was a special one, with it celebrating its 25th anniversary in spectacular style. The event started in 1988 as a word-of-mouth event. Today, you can only get in with a ticket, with numbers limited to around 12000 warmly dressed revellers. There were over 300 performers and members of the Beltane Fire Society on the hill, all dressed in interpretations of ancient Celtic costume. It's a modern revival of the ancient carnival of fire and light which saw off the vestiges of winter and heralded in the spring. The Caledonian Mercury's David Calder joined the throng.
