ISRAEL divided: Kadima biggest Party in the ISRAELI parliament quit (ULTRA orthodox jews SOLDERS)
ISRAEL divided: Kadima biggest Party in the ISRAELI parliament quit (ULTRA orthodox jews SOLDERS) Israel is facing fresh political turmoil after Kadima -- the largest party in the country's Parliament -- quit the coalition government of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Kadima abandoned the coalition a mere two months after joining following a disagreement over the drafting of ultra-orthodox Jews into the army. Kadima, the largest party in the Knesset with 28 of its 120 seats, had joined the government in May with the declared aim of ending a decades-old blanket exemption of Jewish seminary students from military service. In the early days of Israel's existence, then-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion agreed to exempt about 400 pious students from military service so they could devote themselves to a lifetime of studying Jewish scriptures. Now that number has swollen to about 60000 men, all of whom are supported by state handouts, intermittent work or donations from family and friends. Meanwhile, secular men and women in Israel are required to perform a two to three-year stint in the military stint upon turning 18 years old. The pressure from the secular majority has therefore mounted for a more equal sharing of the military burden. The Supreme Court ruled in February that a temporary law that codified the exemptions was unconstitutional and set an August 1 deadline for its expiry. The sides, however, were unable to forge a compromise. "We made a real effort to push toward ...

Tzipi Livni Resigns From Kadima Party After Losing to Shaul Mofaz in Party Election
One of Israel's leading political figures -- Tzippi Livni -- has resigned from the Parliament after 13 years. Not long ago Livni was considered one of the most important Israeli politicians to watch. As the head of Kadima, she led the party to victory in the 2009 elections over Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. But she was unable to form a government and lost the confidence of voters during her term as Opposition leader. In March, Livni lost her position as head of Kadima to Shaul Mofaz in a stinging party election defeat. Her resignation shows she has no interest in being number 2. As she handed in her resignation notice, Livni promised she was not quitting public life. "The state of Israel is too dear to me to stop working for its interests," she told reporters. To ensure she has a political future, political analysts say Livni made a shrewd decision to cut her ties with Kadima to try to re-invent herself... It's likely Livni's decision was prompted by the near certainty that Israel will hold its general elections early -- in September instead of 6 months later in 2013. Sources close to Livni say she may form a new political party or join a new one...they say she hasn't ruled out teaming up with the Yair Lapid. But most agree Livni will have to work hard to repair her reputation which took a beating in the last few years... Livni's onetime supporters abandoned her in the party elections, giving Shaul Mofaz nearly 62% percent of the votes...its seems many wanted her to ...

Likud, Kadima Form Unity Government with Shaul Mofaz as new Deputy Prime Minister
In a surprise move, Israeli leaders have scrapped plans to hold early elections in September after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Shaul Mofaz reached an agreement to form a unity government. Netanyahu's Likud party has reportedly agreed to back a proposal by Mofaz's Kadima to do away with exempting ultra-Orthodox Jews from serving in the Israeli military in exchange for support of Likud policies until elections are held in 2013. Mofaz is expected to assume the role of deputy prime minister just weeks after replacing Tzipi Livni as the leader of the country's main opposition. Mofaz, who is a former army chief and defence minister, has been a vocal critic of Netanyahu's calls for a military strike against Iran, and his inclusion in the new government could change the course of Israeli foreign policy, at least in the short term. Leaders of smaller parties meanwhile sharply criticized the move, with Meretz leader Zahava Gal-On calling it a disgrace to the Israeli parliament, although it is expected to bring more stability to the current government.

Netanyahu in surprise coalition with Kadima
Israel's prime minister has called off plans for early elections after forming a national-unity government with the centrist Kadima party. Binyamin Netanyahu says his new government will promote a "responsible" peace process with the Palestinians. The Knesset, Israel's parliament, is expected to approve a deal later on Tuesday, which will see Kadima join the unity government after a major U-turn by Kadima's leader, Shaul Mofaz. Al Jazeera's Cal Perry reports from Jerusalem.

Shaul Mofaz Wins Kadima Election, Becomes Opposition Leader: Tzipi Livni's Future Unclear
Knesset member Shaul Mofaz, currently the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, won the Kadima party election and defeated incumbent rival Tzipi Livni. Formerly the opposition leader, Livni only narrowly beat Mofaz in the last Kadima election in 2008, but in the 2012 election, she lost by a wide 25% margin (62% to 37%). The voter turnout was approximately 43%. Tzipi Livni served as foreign minister in Ehud Olmert's administration, where as chief negotiator in peace talks with the Palestinians, she supported a two-state solution. Livni was also the first female opposition leader. While the election loss is certainly an upset for her political career, she was recently named one of Newsweek Magazine's 150 "women who shake the world." As Mofaz announced his victory, he publicly asked Livni to remain in the Kadima party, saying "Tzipi, you belong with us." However, he stopped short of inviting her publicly to the party's new leadership. He reportedly said, "I want her with me," but shortly after that added, "Everyone can be replaced." However, it's not clear what Livni will do or whether she will even remain in politics. After the election result was announced, she said, "It's over. I had a mission, but that's it. I didn't succeed, and it's over." She said she congratulated Mofaz, but refused to answer any questions.

Ultra-Orthodox Military Exemption May Break Coalition: Likud's Netanyahu, Kadima's Mofaz Face Off
Israel's ruling coalition partner Kadima has threatened to pull the plug on its alliance with the Likud party in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to dismiss a panel charged with making recommendations for reforms to make more ultra-Orthodox Israelis and Arab citizens eligible for military service. Many Israelis are angry that thousands of ultra-Orthodox citizens have military service exemption based on religious grounds. Be Free, a non-governmental organisation promoting religious freedom and equality in Israel, estimates this costs the state three billion euros a year. Executive Director Of Be Free Israel Miki Gitzin: "The major problem here, actually, it started with the establishment of the state of Israel back in 48' the Prime Minister Ben Gurion had allowed 400 only ultra-Orthodox students not to serve in the army. Today we are talking about more than 60 thousand people mostly from the ultra-Orthodox community who do not serve in the army legally." Netanyahu has previously indicated he would be in favour of making changes but recently the Prime Minister has been coming under growing pressure from ultra-Orthodox members of his coalition to block the conscription reform. In ultra-orthodox communities, talk of change to the law has not been welcomed. Resident of Mee Shearim neighbourhood Simcha Folg "For whatever reason in this military state they need everybody to serve in the army. In most countries it's not like that and therefore most people ...
