EGU2011: Three grand challenges in geomorphology: rock, climate, and life (Arthur Holmes ML)
Medal Lecture by William E. Dietrich at the 2011 General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union. (Credit: EGU/CNTV.at) The European Geosciences Union (EGU, www.egu.eu is Europe's premier geosciences union, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences for the benefit of humanity, worldwide. It is a non-profit interdisciplinary learned association of scientists founded in 2002. The EGU has a current portfolio of 14 diverse scientific journals, which use an innovative open-access format, and organises a number of topical meetings, and education and outreach activities. Its annual General Assembly is the largest and most prominent European geosciences event, attracting over 10000 scientists from all over the world. The meeting's sessions cover a wide range of topics, including volcanology, planetary exploration, the Earth's internal structure and atmosphere, climate change, and renewable energies.

Geology Geomorphology Field Work 2010 Sierra Nevada CA
Follow Megan Miller, an undergraduate geology student at the University of North Dakota, through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, as she learns what geomorphology and field work are all about. Filmed the summer of 2010 during a 3 week journey across the Midwest to California. This is a great video to help understand what we do and how we do it.

MRU Visual Geomorphology Liguria Part 1.mpg
Part 1 of 2 - The video shows the general morphological setting of the Liguria region, based on a digital elevation model from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission at 90 meters of resolution. The animation shows different areas of the region which are of specific interest for the analysis of the relationship between geomorphological conditions and the geological-structural setting. These areas are: Val Fontanabuona and Val di Vara in Liguria di Levante; the comb-shaped coastal valleys in the Imperiese; the carstic landscapes in Finalese in Liguria di Ponente; and in the appennines the area of S.Stefano d'Aveto, characterized by significant deep-seated gravitational slope deformations. The model has been rendered using Natural Scene Designer 4 for landscape visualization applying an elevation-based color scheme of cartographical appearance, so that the 3D forms could be enhanced by coloring as well as by shading. The video is an example of how landscape animation based on regional-scale terrain models and on exploration design guidelines constitutes a useful instrument in research and in teaching to visualize the characteristics of landforms. Tellus - 3D Forward Stratigraphic & Geomorphological Model
This animation shows the 500000 years evolution of a landscape subject to combine effect of climate and geodynamics. The model is based on a Eulerian Lagrangian approach and is called Tellus Tellus is able to simulate various type of gravity flows (rivers, turbidity and debris flows) and their associated impact on sedimentary architectures. This movie shows flows network (stream lines) and surface evolution. Tellus is under development in CSIRO Earth Science and Resources Engineering Division (Australia)

Physical Geography II - Geomorphology
www.tmwmedia.com This program introduces students to the various forces, which have shaped our earth. These include wind, running water, glaciers, volcanoes, temperature changes, gravity, ocean currents, faulting and folding. The first part of the program introduces students to each of these concepts followed by fifty land formations and information about each formation.

Tellus - 3D Forward Stratigraphic & Geomorphological Model
Simple example of concurrent action of imposed tectonic uplift and climatic regime over landscape evolution. The initial setting of the test corresponds to an upscaled version of the experiments proposed by Bonnet et al. [2003]. This video shows the landscape evolution as well as the flow pathways through time.

When Life's a Plastic Beach - Adventures in Geomorphology
Geomorphologist Taylor Perron loves figuring out how landscapes tick. His group is particularly intersted in how patterns emerge in landscapes (from river networks to ripples in sand at the shoreline), how climate, and especially rainfall and sunlight, influence landscape, and the landscapes that occur on other planets and moons and how they differ from what is seen on Earth. In this video Taylor shares two research projects: "Landscapes on the Move" focuses on Taylor's work modeling river valley evolution. Speeding up the process from hundreds of thousands of years to just a few minutes, Taylor reveals what a dynamic process the evolution of topography is. In "Ripples in Rocks - A Day at the Plastic Beach" Taylor compares time-lapse video from a laboratory wave-tank with computer animations in an exploration of how ripple structures get set into rock, and the geometries they exhibit. Read more about Taylor's work to predict the speed of valley spread in the MIT News article The hills are evolving (web.mit.edu Video credit: Helen Hill (eaps-www.mit.edu
