North Cliffs Failure - Amazing Cliff Collapse caught on Camera!
Active Coastal Erosion in Cornwall. See 'North Cliffs 3hrs Later' video on my channel also. Very lucky to witness 1000's of tonnes of rock falling into the Atlantic! Thanks for all of your positive comments, sorry I can't reply to them all individually. Hopefully I can answer most of the FAQ's now.... The failure occurred at about 5pm on Friday 23rd September 2011. It took place on the North Coast of Cornwall. There were only a few people watching, with about the same number of inquisitive seals in the water! There were lots of 'small' failures just before the main event. This appears to be a progressive failure, the frequency and size of the smaller failures increased until the inevitable happened. The sound was incredible, those cliffs are about 150-200ft high. I'd been chatting to the couple mentioned in the clip only a few minutes before the footage was taken. They can just be seen walking away in the distance; the path had been fenced off and diverted, so they were quite safe. An amazing sight, and credit to R who took the video, I still can't stop revisiting it! Thanks again for all the comments, who says Geology isn't an exciting subject?!. Oh, & finally..... I'm happy to report that no seals or humans were hurt in the filming of this clip! ACSM(93)

Coastal Erosion East Anglia 2012 An Insight into Managed Retreat?
Discussion Forum: pocketfullofacorns.com East Anglia has a very sick coastline and is sparsely vegetated at best, there is little root structure in the soils to prevent erosion. Cliffs are formed from soft loose sediment soils, generally vertical and subject to undermining by surf action and storm surges. Many homes and entire villages have been lost in the past and the process of coastal erosion is accelerating due to present and past governments inaction or concern for the people who live close to the edge like Bryony Neirop Reading who lives on the edge of a rapidly eroding cliff. Managed Retreat is bounded around from department to department but selling "The Do Nothing" approach to sea defences is a tough one to deliver on. Another term banded around is to "Make Way For Water" -which essentially means to watch the tides roll in over arable farmland and destroy our much needed food production. Many thousands have been lost around the world's coastlines where the absence of inadequate sea defences are present and many man made concrete structures have failed. Take the Tsunami or Louisiana Hurricane, or indeed the great floods in Holland where many thousands of lives have been lost collectively. Many areas that where forested coastlines bore the brunt of the tsunami and the trees stood firm significantly subduing the immense waves. People clung to the trees and survived. In Banda Ace there were no trees to protect the people. In Japan Concrete walls designed to protect ...

Mini Lecture Rosh Ranasinghe about Coastline Erosion due to Rising Sea Levels
In this mini lecture Dr. Rosh Ranasinghe introduces a new model that allows researchers at UNESCO-IHE, TU Delft and Deltares to much more accurately predict coastline erosion due to rising sea levels. It would appear that the effects of coastline erosion as a result of rising sea-level in the vicinity of inlets, such as river estuaries, have until now been dramatically underestimated. The scientists have published their research in the online edition of Nature Climate Change on Sunday 2 September 2012. Read more: bit.ly

Climate change factor in beach erosion?
Did climate change play a role in the accelerated beach erosion along A1A in Fort Lauderdale? The moon casted a brilliant yet ominous glow on the waters off a 4-block stretch of A1A from NE 20th street to Sunrise, the easter edge of which collapsed into the ocean on Friday. Locals have been documenting the steady erosion of the shoreline since Super Storm Sandy swiped the area with strong wind gusts and large swells. The final punch came on Friday with high tides paired with a strong surf. Portions of the sea wall, sidewalks and palm trees collapsed into the Atlantic. A public shower stall used by beach-goers coming in from the beach sits at a slant in the ocean. The foundation of a street light at NE 16th court surrounded by white surf. The water lapping exposed wires. Now the ocean's waves are dangerously close to what's left. Water and sand have compromised the northbound lanes of A1A, eroding the remaining fragments of parking spots. After declaring an emergency, the Florida Department of Transportation built a wall of concrete traffic barriers. With a full moon expected on Wednesday they are considering adding more to the roadway as a possible breakwater if needed. On Tuesday morning they will re-paint the road and add barriers to ensure cars, cyclists and pedestrians don't travel the area that is now deemed unsafe. It remains unclear when the northbound lanes will re-open to traffic but it is known that that could take months. Police are now using the southbound ...

Landroids "Climate Connections" Beach Erosion Project
Team LANDROIDS' science research project on Beach Erosion in NJ. The team proposed to use submersible wave pumps to convey sand slurry back toward to shoreline to self-replenish the beaches, using an existing technology in an alternate application, for a long term, sustainable and economical solution to address beach erosion problems.
