Randall's Island Salt Marsh and Freshwater Wetlands in New York is a 9 acre salt marsh and freshwater area along the East River across from the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Harlem in New York City. Benefactors raised and spent 6 million to restore and preserve the area, which is part of Randall's Island Park. The welands helps reduce water pollution while serving as a habitat for a range of wildlife species. These marsh grasses are now soaking up heavy metals and petroleum byproducts, improving water quality and reducing nonpoint source pollution and nitrogen inputs into the East River and Long Island Sound. Shore and predatory birds, crustaceans, mollusks, riparian mammals and juvenile and adult fish have begun to forage, nest, and seek refuge in the reconstructed salt marsh.
