NYC DOT Muni-Meters

NEW MUNI-METERS INSTALLED ALONG FLATBUSH AVENUE

The newly installed Muni-Meters installed along our district, are for citywide on-street parking spots.  The lollipop designed meters will be removed soon.  The new meters accepts coins (quarters, dollar coins) and NYC Parking Cards. Credit cards are accepted at some Muni-Meters.

Free Sundays-Parking meters and Muni-Meters do not have to paid on Sundays. This legislation went into effect on Sunday, November 13, 2005.

For Pay and Display meters, customers purchase time, take a receipt, and then displa it on the cars dashboards.

Motorcyles - Like other motorists, motorcyclists using Pay and Display Muni-Meters, must display their receipt on their vehicle. To prevent theft or damage to the receipt, DOT recommends using clear plastic holders attached to the motorcylce with a lock or other mechanism. Devices made esspecially for this purpose can be found in speciality stores.

Mulchfest 2012

Posted by Sharon Davidson on 01/03/2012 under What's New | Be the First to Comment

Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

Last year, close to 17,000 Christmas trees citywide were recycled. Please help us top this number!

This year, MulchFest will take place on January 7 and 8, 2012. Parks will host over 35 chipping sites and 35 additional drop-off locations: over 70 sites in all!

And this year, you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from January 2 through January 8.

It’s easier than ever to chip in!

Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. The closest Mulchfest location in our area is Prospect Park at Third Street and PPW.

Our new banners for 2012

2012 North Flatbush Avenue Banner

2012 North Flatbush Avenue Banner

And the winner is….

In September 2010, we invited the public to submit a banner design for our district, using the color scheme of our new logo.  During the next several months, we received 100’s of submissions.  It was difficult for us to make a decision.  We finally narrowed the selection down to 3 designs and our Board of Directors voted to include this banner on our 30 light poles.

All 30 poles have been sponsored by some of our merchants and we are happy to provide an additional source of  for our businesses along North Flatbush Avenue.

We expect the new banners to go up in mid January and will hang throughout the year until the next seasonal holiday banners are hung in mid November.

Congratulations to Tia Johnson for her design.   Tia originally hails from Brooklyn and raised her children in our Park Slope neighborhood. Tia graduated from The Pratt Insititute School of Design with a degree in graphic art and design.     This is Tia’s 3rd win for the North Flatbush Avenue BID.

New Traffic Light at Carlton and Park Place

corner of Carlton Avenue and Park Place

After years of many complaints and near fatal accidents, a new traffic light has been installed on the corner of Park Place and Carlton Avenue.
The Stop sign has been replaced with traffic lights for traffic calming and pedestrian safety.

The traffic lights and new cross walks make walking across Carlton and from Flatbush to Carlton much easier for all of us.

The North Flatbush Avenue BID is working to have the new electric light at the triangle fixed so that there will be better lighting in that area.  As we progress with our Capital Streetscape Plan, the Carlton Avenue triangle will be repaired and repaved.

New trees for our neigborhood

new tree on Flatbush Avenue Jan. 6. 2011Take a walk along North Flatbush Avenue during these warmer days, and you will notice that there are 11 new trees along our corridor.

The BID has been working with the NYC Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry to include new trees into our district.  Unfortunately, because of the subway grates and new bus and traffic signs, we are limited as the amount we can allow.  Trees cannot block any traffic lights, signs and parking signs.

We are happy to have these new trees that delineate our district and ads a fresh new beauty to our area.

If you would like to adopt a tree near your business or property, please feel free to call or email the BID office.  We will be hosting workshops on care of trees and  planting flowers and bulbs around your new tree.

TO ALL MERCHANTS OF NORTH FLATBUSH AVENUE AND PROSPECT HEIGHTS!!

Spring has officially arrived – and as the warm weather crowds return and your calendars continue to fill up with great events, we are delighted to bring your attention to the annual Brooklyn Half Marathon held on May 19, 2012.

For the past three years, merchants, restaurants and attractions around Park Slope and Prospect Heights have celebrated Brooklyn’s own premier running event by providing discounts to runners and their family and friends throughout the Brooklyn Half weekend. This year, the event is bigger and better than ever: over 18,000 runners signed up for the race in record time (under 10 hours), and crowds upwards of 30,000 are expected to come out and cheer. This year’s race will have a new course: runners will start near the Brooklyn Museum, make their way through Prospect Park and will finish near the iconic Coney Island boardwalk.

In preparation of this opportunity, we cordially invite you to a special event to plan for this amazing race and coordinate the best ways for your business to take advantage of the opportunity for exposure.

Please join us for a special luncheon at Burrito Bar, 307 Flatbush Avenue on Wednesday, April 18 at 12:30 pm to discuss ways you can be a part of the celebration, such as providing discounts to runners and spectators or opening early on the day of the race. We hope you are able to attend, and look forward to working with all of you to make this an incredible event for all involved.

Please let Brian Dershowitz (bdershowitz@nyrr.org) know if you are able to attend by Friday, April 13th. If you are unable to attend but wish to be involved, please contact us.

Thank you ahead of time for your support.

Best,

Marty Markowitz

BUSINESS LINK EMPLOYER INCENTIVES PLUS

Did you know that employers may qualify to receive wage subsidies equal to 40% of an employee’s gross monthly salary (up to $400 per month) for a maximum of six months?

The North Flatbush Avenue BID has teamed up with Business Link and NYC Department of Human Resources to offer our businesses a financial incentive to encourage and promote the employment of out of work recipients to offset the cost of hiring new employees.

What is Employer Incentives Plus:  provides a substantial wage subsidy to employers who hire recipients from NYC HRA for full or part time positions.  Participating employers may qualify to receive wage subsidies equal to 40% of an employee’s monthly salary (up to $400.00 per month) for a maximum of 6 months. Payments are processed within 4 to 6 weeks.

How do  you find qualified candidates?  Business Link  will recruit, pre-screen, and refer candidates they believe are appropriate for your positions (based on the requirements you specify) and pre-qualify them for Employer Incentives Plus.

How do I learn more about this Program?:   The North Flatbush Avenue BID will be hosting a seminar in September with members of Business Link/Employer Incentives Plus and NYC Department of HRA where you will have the opportunity to learn more about this program and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.  I highly recommend our small businesses to attend this meeting and find out how you can participate.  Will be posting all the information on our website shortly. In the meantime, feel free to call our offices with any questions.
