Lithuania: From the Birth of the Grand Duchy to the Battle of Grunwald
As my 50th video here on YouTube I present to you an exciting excursion to the history of the Medieval Lithuania. The emphasis of the narrative is on the relation between Lithuania and the Knights of the Teutonic Order. This based on presentation that I wrote some two years ago for my Baltic history class. Grunwald Battle - Movie English - the Battle of Grunwald
The Battle of Grunwald in 1410 Polish Historical film with english subtitles. "The Teutons" by Alexander Ford (1960). Grunwald battle scene. The Battle of Grunwald or Battle of Tannenberg was fought on 15 July 1410, during the Polish--Lithuanian--Teutonic War. The alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led respectively by King Jogaila (Władysław Jagiełło) and Grand Duke Vytautas the Great (Witold, Vitort, Vitovt, Vitaut, Вітаўт, Витовт), decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Most of the Teutonic Knights' leadership were killed or taken prisoner. While defeated, the Teutonic Knights withstood the siege on their fortress in Marienburg (Malbork) and suffered only minimal territorial losses at the Peace of Thorn (1411) (Toruń). Territorial disputes continued until the Peace of Melno was concluded in 1422. However, the Teutonic Knights never recovered their former power and the financial burden of war reparations caused internal conflicts and an economic downturn in their lands. The battle shifted the balance of power in Eastern Europe and marked the rise of the Polish--Lithuanian union as the dominant political and military force in the region. The battle was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe and is regarded as the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania. tags: Grunwald battle, battle of grunwald, grunwald, the teutons, film, movie, 1410, battle scene, grunwald battle ...

"Lithuania, my Homeland..."
...... commonwealth.pl . United Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania refers to a series of acts and alliances between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that lasted for prolonged periods of time and led to the creation of the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth—the "Republic of the Two Nations"—in 1569 and eventually to the creation of a short-lived unitary state in 1791. The most important acts in the process of union were: * 1385 Union of Krewo— a personal union that brought Grand Duke of Lithuania Jogaila to Polish throne; * 1401 Union of Vilnius and Radom reassured sovereignty of Grand Duchy of Lithuania; * 1413 Union of Horodło - heraldic union, that granted many szlachta rights to Lithuanian nobility; * 1432 (143234) Union of Grodno a declarative attempt to renew closer union; * 1499 Union of Kraków and Vilnius personal union turns to dynastic union, recognises sovereignty of Lithuania and sescribes interation between two states; * 1501 Union of Mielnik - personal union renewed; * July 1, 1569 Union of Lublin — a real union that resulted in creation of the semi-federal, semi-confedederal Republic of the Two Nations; and * May 3, 1791 Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791: the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were abolished, and a common state was created in their place. The changes were modified with the Reciprocal Guarantee of Two Nations that stressed the continuity of bi-national status of the state, and were reversed completely in 1792 ...

POLISH LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH
...... commonwealth.pl . The Polish--Lithuanian Commonwealth was one of the largest and most populous countries in 17th-century Europe. Its political structure—that of a semi-federal, semi-confederal aristocratic republic—was formed in 1569 by the Union of Lublin, which united the Crown of the Polish Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and lasted in this form until the adoption of the Constitution of May 3, 1791. The Commonwealth covered not only the territories of what is now Poland and Lithuania, but also the entire territory of Belarus and Latvia, large parts of Ukraine and Estonia, and part of present-day western Russia (Smolensk and Kaliningrad oblasts). Originally the official languages of the Commonwealth were Polish and Latin (in the Kingdom of Poland) and Ruthenian and Lithuanian (in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). The creation of the Commonwealth by the Union of Lublin in 1569 was one of the signal achievements of Sigismund II Augustus, last monarch of the Jagiellon dynasty, in an effort to preserve the monarchy by adopting elective monarchy. His death in 1572 was followed by a three-year interregnum during which adjustments were made to the constitutional system that effectively increased the power of the nobility and established a truly elective monarchy.

Battle of Grunwald HD - (1410) Grand Duke Vitort and King Jogaila vs Teutonic Knights
Grand Duke Vitort of Lithuania (Historical Variations: Vytautas, Vitort, Vitovt, Witold) and his cousin King Jogaila of Poland decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Most of the Teutonic Knights' leadership were killed or taken prisoner. The battle was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe and is regarded as the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania. It was surrounded by romantic legends and nationalistic propaganda, becoming a larger symbol of struggle against invaders and a source of national pride. Vilnius In Your Pocket - Grand Duke Mindaugas
www.inyourpocket.com Vilnius In Your Pocket editor Andrew Quested on the story of Mindaugas II, who almost became Lithuania's second king. On July 6, 2003, the holiday of the Crowning of Grand Duke Mindaugas, a sculpture (by R.Midvikis) and a bridge were unveiled both bearing the name of Mindaugas. The sculpture on Arsenalo 1, in front of the National Museum, sort of faces the bridge that spans the Neris River, a not very attractive piece of gridiron but necessary to stem the ever-growing tide of traffic. The sculpture made of granite is fairly stylised and is perched on sloping slabs of polished stone which have become a new playground slide for kids and In Your Pocket editors. So much for respecting the one and only King of Lithuania. For more on the Mindaugas monument go to vilnius.inyourpocket.com

Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth Res Publica Serenissima Regno Poloniae i Magno Ducati Lithuaniae
The Jagiellon Era of (1385-1569) refers to the union of Poland with Lithuania by the Lithuanian grand duke Jogaila. The partnership proved profitable for the Poles and Lithuanians, who played a dominant role in one of the most powerful empires in Europe for the next three centuries Poland-Lithuania (1569 - 1795) PolishLithuanian Commonwealth at its greatest extent The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, also known as the First Polish Commonwealth, (Polish: Pierwsza Rzeczpospolita Polska or Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów (Commonwealth of Both Nations); Lithuanian: Abiejų tautų respublika) or as the "First Commonwealth," was one of the largest, most powerful and most populous countries in 16th, 17th, and 18th century Europe. Its political structure — that of a semi-federal, semi-confederal aristocratic republic — was formed in 1569 by the Union of Lublin, which united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and lasted in this form until the adoption of the Constitution of May 3, 1791. The Polish-Lithuanian democracy was unique in Europe ruled by absolute kings. Full of tolerance and freedom, the country became a home of many nations, including Poles, Lithuanians, Ruthenians, Tatars, Armenians, Germans... Jews, who were persecuted in the rest of Europe, found here a sanctuary. There were no religious wars at all. This mighty kingdom had been succesfully defending christian Europe against Turks for a few centuries, although there were also many Muslims living ...
