Who repealed the Glass-Steagall Act?
The Glass Steagall Act President Roosevelt signed into law was repealed. See who swept aside the banking firewall protections on the 12th of November 1999. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, is an act of the 106th United States Congress (1999-2001), signed into law by President Clinton which repealed part of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, opening up the market among banking companies, securities companies and insurance companies. The Glass-Steagall Act prohibited any one institution from acting as any combination of an investment bank, a commercial bank, and/or an insurance company. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act allowed commercial banks, investment banks, securities firms and insurance companies to consolidate. www.govtrack.us www.govtrack.us www.nytimes.com www.nytimes.com www.nytimes.com www.nytimes.com www.time.com www.time.com www.time.com www.c-spanarchives.org www.jameslavin.com en.wikipedia.org

'CISPA pushed by spy & tech companies for profit'
Congress has attempted to sneak legislation that could change the face of the Internet as we know it, and all in the name of national security. First there was SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, but now CISPA (Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act) is threatening the privacy and freedom of US citizens. No online activity will be safe when it comes to these bills because as of now what's considered a cyber security threat is a large grey area, but David Seaman, journalist and host of The DL Show, joins us to take a closer look at CISPA. Obamacare: Delivering Affordable Health Care
Watch the health care stories: OFA.BO Share this: OFA.BO Tweet this: OFA.BO I know there will be a lot of discussion today about the politics of all this, about who won and who lost. But that discussion completely misses the point. Whatever the politics, today's decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives will be more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court's decision to uphold it. If you're one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance—this law will only make it more secure and more affordable. Insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits on the amount of care you receive. They can no longer discriminate against children with pre-existing conditions. They can no longer drop your coverage if you get sick. They can no longer jack up your premiums without reason. They are required to provide free preventive care like check-ups and mammograms. Young adults under the age of 26 are able to stay on their parent's health care plans. Seniors receive a discount on their prescription drugs. And by this August, nearly 13 million of you will receive a rebate from your insurance company because it spent too much on things like administrative costs and CEO bonuses, and not enough on your health care. All of this is happening because of the Affordable Care Act. Today, I'm as confident as ever that when we look back five years from now, or 10 years from now, or 20 years from ...

Super PAC Donors Have Corporate Bribery Issues
"A federal law to prevent US companies from paying bribes to business overseas recently came to the forefront when The New York Times reported that Walmart officials had covered up alleged bribes made by company representatives in Mexico. The retail giant faces federal investigation for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Wealthy individuals connected with Walmart have meanwhile taken advantage of new campaign finance rules that allow for unlimited contributions -- and raise fears of unlimited influence over a future administration. Jim and Alice Walton, children of the founder of Walmart, have contributed $200000 each to Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign...The Waltons are not alone among super PAC donors with businesses facing FCPA investigation. At least three other major contributors currently have FCPA worries, and others may be looming. The US Chamber of Commerce, another big-money campaign spender, continues its lobbying to loosen enforcement of the anti-corruption law...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Paul Blumenthal in The Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: twitter.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

SOPA: Silicon Valley vs. Hollywood in fight against online piracy act
www.nma.tv The entertainment industry has long lobbied congress for tougher laws on piracy. It seems HR 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA was going to deliver the toughest penalties yet. Introduced by Texas congressman Lamar Smith, SOPA gives the government the authority to block whole websites for copyright infringement, rather than the existing system of take-down notices. This puts social websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube in particular danger as it would be all but impossible to monitor all of their users. For a while, it seemed like SOPA was destined for easy passage in congress. But the bill's backers did not count on a populist campaign rising in opposition to SOPA. Tech companies came together in a rare show of solidarity to fight the bill. Even Microsoft, a company that has long called for tougher piracy laws, acknowledge that SOPA goes too far. The website Tumblr's campaign to get its users to call congress generated 87834 calls alone. The American Censorship Day campaign sponsored by Fight for the Future and the Electronic Frontiers Foundation was also very successful. Has the tide turned against SOPA? With powerful congressional figures such as minority leader Nancy Pelosi speaking out against the bill as well as the energetic online opposition, its prospects for passage seems less certain. However, users on the site Reddit are not taking any chances...they are in the process of building what they call 'meshnet', a network that will directly ...

DC Taxi Heist: How a new law would screw drivers and riders
Washington, DC is considering a bill that would require every cab driver in the city to own a special permit called a medallion. The total number of medallions would be capped at 4000, which would reduce the current number of cabs by more than one-third and put thousands of drivers out of business. (The city government has no idea how many licensed cabs are in the district, though estimates range from 6500 to 10000.) If that weren't bad enough, most drivers wouldn't have the option of buying a medallion. The first set of medallions would be offered for sale to the minority of cabbies who have been driving for at least five years and who live in Washington DC (Again the city government has no idea how many current drivers meet this criteria, but rising real estate prices and weak city services have led many drivers to leave the district.) Who will be offered the next set of medallions, according to the bill? That would be cab companies, who could then rent medallions to drivers. This system would destroy the relatively open-access taxi industry in DC, in which the majority of drivers are owner-operators free to make their own schedules and keep whatever money they earn on the job. In cities such as New York and Boston, drivers pay upwards of $800 a week to rent their medallions. Cab riders would also suffer under the new regime. Reducing the number of taxis on the street will make it harder to catch a cab, especially in non-tourist neighborhoods and areas far from business ...

DEFCON 18: Your ISP and the Government: Best Friends Forever 1/3
Speaker: Christopher Soghoian Your Internet, phone and web application providers are all, for the most part, in bed with the government. They all routinely disclose their customers' communications and other private data to law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Worse, firms like Google and Microsoft specifically log data in order to assist the government, while AT&T and Verizon are paid $1.8 million per year in order to provide real time access to customer communications records to the FBI. How many government requests does your ISP get for its customers' communications each year? How many do they comply with? How many do they fight? How much do they charge for the surveillance assistance they provide? Who knows. Most companies have a strict policy of not discussing such topics. You might assume that the law gives companies very little wiggle room - when they are required to provide data, they must do so. This is true. However, companies have a huge amount of flexibility in the way they design their networks, in the amount of data they retain by default, the emergency circumstances in which they share data without a court order, and the degree to which they fight unreasonable requests. The differences in the privacy practices of the major players in the telecommunications and Internet applications market are significant: Some firms retain identifying data for years, while others retain no data at all; some voluntarily provide the government access to user data ...

Mark Dice & Alex Jones: New Cybersecurity Bill Gives Obama 'Power To Shut Down Companies' 1/3
Paul Joseph Watson www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv www.infowars.net www.prisonplanet.com September 28, 2010 An amalgamated cybersecurity bill that lawmakers hope to pass before the end of the year includes new powers which would allow President Obama to shut down not only entire areas of the Internet, but also businesses and industries that fail to comply with government orders following the declaration of a national emergency -- increasing fears that the legislation will be abused as a political tool. The draft bill is a combination of two pieces of legislation originally crafted by Senators Lieberman and Rockefeller. One of the differences between the new bill and the original Lieberman version is that the Internet "kill switch" power has been limited to 90 days without congressional oversight, rather than the original period of four months contained in the Lieberman bill. In other words, President Obama can issue an emergency declaration that lasts 30 days and he can renew it for a further 60 days before congress can step in to oversee the powers. The new powers would give Obama a free hand to not only shut down entire areas of the Internet and block all Internet traffic from certain countries, but under the amalgamated bill he would also have the power to completely shut down industries that don't follow government orders, according to a Reuters summary of the new bill. "Industries, companies or portions of companies could be temporarily shut down, or be required ...

States Should Flatly Reject ObamaCare Exchanges
Tweet this: bit.ly www.cato.org Here are just a few reasons why states should refuse to create ObamaCare Exchanges. Jobs. Refusing to create an exchange will block Obamacare from imposing a tax on employers whose health benefits do not meet the federal government's definition of "essential" coverage. That tax can run as high as $3000 per employee. A state that refuses to create an exchange will spare its employers from that tax, and will therefore enable them to create more jobs. Religious freedom. In blocking that employer tax, state officials would likewise block Obamacare's effort to force religious employers to provide coverage for services they find immoral — like contraception, pharmaceutical abortions, and sterilization. The federal debt. Refusing to create exchanges would also reduce the federal debt, because it would prevent the Obama administration from doling out billions of dollars in subsidies to private insurance companies. The US Constitution. The Obama administration has indicated that it might try to tax employers and hand out those subsidies anyway — even in states that don't create an exchange, and even though neither Obamacare nor any other federal law gives it the power to do so. If that happens, the fact that a state has refused to create an exchange would give every large employer in the state — including the state government itself — the ability to go to court to block the administration's attempt to usurp Congress's legislative powers. How Monsanto put this farmer in court over GE seed
www.greenpeace.org.au || Moe Parr is a seed cleaner in Indiana, USA. In February 2007, Monsanto initiated a law suit against him. The biotech company claimed that Moe had encouraged farmers of genetically engineered soybean to save their seed. Moe is one of many farmers in North America who've faced coercion from Monsanto through legal and economic pressure. "Monsanto doesn't really care that you win the case because as soon as you win the case, they're going on to the next court," says Moe. Along with Canadian farmer Ross Murray, Moe is in Australia to speak with Australian farmers about his experiences with GE crops. Support Australian farmers who don't want to grow GE crops by asking your government to * stay/go GE-free * introduce strict liability law that puts the responsibility for contamination onto the GE seed companies.
