Edward O. Wilson on the Human Condition
Watch the complete video for free at fora.tv Edward O. Wilson, biologist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, discusses the nature of humans, and what lies ahead for our species. ---- Edward O. Wilson has revolutionized science and inspired the public more often than any other living biologist. Now he is blending his pioneer work on ants with a new perspective on human development to propose a radical reframing of how evolution works. First the social insects ruled, from 60 million years ago. Then a species of social mammals took over, from 10 thousand years ago. Both sets of "eusocial" animals mastered the supremely delicate art of encouraging altruism, so that individuals in the groups would act as if they value the goal of the group over their own goals. They would specialize for the group and die for the group. In recent decades the idea of "kin selection" seemed to explain how such an astonishing phenomenon could evolve. Wilson replaces kin selection with "multi-level selection," which incorporates both individual selection (long well understood) and group selection (long considered taboo). Every human and every human society has to learn how to manage adroitly the perpetual ambiguity and conflict between individual needs and group needs. What I need is never the same as what we need. EO Wilson's current book is The Social Conquest of Earth. His previous works include The Superorganism; The Future of Life; Consilience; Biophilia; Sociobiology; and The Insect Societies.

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST

HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times
A9. DESIGNER

B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to

B3. PERSONALITY PROFILE
Steve Friess, LA Weekly, ―A Tragic Love Story‖
2nd Place: Charlotte Hsu, LA Weekly, ―Forever Scared — The Story of

HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"

Marilia e Mauricio {Wedding Film}

Every wedding we shoot is special but this one was a bit different because it was my own wedding!
My brother Fabio directed the film crew and I spent a few months editing the footage, trying to forget the fact that this film was about me.
It was a long but fulfilling process. I relived each moment of one of the most special days of my life during the post-production phase, putting scenes together and crying every time I watched them. :)
I hope you are as moved while watching this as my brother and I were when filming and editing.
-
To best watch it: Press "play" then press "pause" and wait for the film to fully load, and then press "play" again. Enjoy!

Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize: EO Wilson and Rebecca Skloot
chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. This annual prize, awarded separately for fiction and nonfiction, recognizes recently published works "embodying the spirit of the nations heartland." The prizes are part of the Chicago Tribune's ongoing dedication to reading, writing, and ideas. Fiction Anthill by EO Wilson This extraordinary first novel, by one of the preeminent scientists of his generation, is simultaneously a coming-of-age story of a boy in the wilds of southern Alabama, a unique and glorious dramatization of the "humanity" and beauty of ant society, and a persuasive argument for biodiversity, the primacy of natural cycles, and environmentalism. EO Wilson deftly weaves these three threads into a fascinating and remarkable novel. Wilson is an ethicist, a social theorist, an environmentalist, a biologist, and, of course, one of the world's leading experts on ants. At 81 years old, he is the author of over 20 books and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for nonfiction for The Ants, written with Bert Hölldobler, and On Human Nature. Nonfiction: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot In 1951, a poor black tobacco farmer named Henrietta Lacks died of an aggressive form of cervical cancer. Just 31 years old, she left behind five children, and an astonishing legacy: cells from her cervix—taken without her knowledge—became the first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, and one of the most important tools in medicine. episode 75 - EO Wilson and Bert Hölldobler - part 01
Part 1: Renowned entomologists EO Wilson and Bert Hölldobler discuss their latest collaborative work, The Superorganism: The Beauty, Elegance, and Strangeness of Insect Societies. In this, the first of a two-part interview, Wilson and Hölldobler, who jointly won a Pulitzer Prize for a prior book, The Ants, explain that a superorganism is a group of animals living together in such a tightly organized fashion that it develops the characteristics of a single organism. Superorganisms are found in insect societies with a clear division of labor, with members divided into reproducing and non-reproducing castes. This episode includes fascinating photographs of various types of ants involved in such collaborative behavior as feeding one another and recruiting nestmates for defense against invaders. Part 2: In part two of this two-part interview, renowned entomologists and co-winners of the Pulitzer Prize, EO Wilson and Bert Hölldobler, continue their discussion of ant societies by offering observations about altruistic care-giving behavior in ants. The conversation then moves on to more personal and philosophical topics. Wilson and Hölldobler maintain that there is a human nature, and Hölldobler points out that it is natural for societies of the same species to fight each other, although humans strive to overcome that tendency through teaching and moral philosophy. Wilson observes that humans "live in a Star Wars civilization...have stone-age emotions...live in medieval <b>...</b>
