The Morning Star is a left wing British daily tabloid newspaper with a focus on social and trade union issues.^[1] Articles and comment columns are contributed by writers from socialist, social democratic, green and religious perspectives.

The newspaper was founded in 1930 as the Daily Worker, the organ of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). Since 1945 the paper has been owned by the People's Press Printing Society; it was relaunched as the Morning Star in 1966. Britain's Road to Socialism, the programme of the Communist Party of Britain (which split from the CPGB in 1988), underlies the paper's editorial stance.^[2]

[edit] The Daily Worker (1930–1966)

The Morning Star was founded in 1930 as the Daily Worker, the organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Great Britain.^[3] The first edition was produced on 1 January 1930^[4] from the offices of the newspaper in Tabernacle Street, London by eight Party members including Kay Beauchamp.^[5] In January 1934 The Daily Worker's offices moved to Cayton Street off the City Road. On 1 October 1935, the first eight page Daily Worker was produced.

The paper criticised Sir Walter Citrine after a Paris meeting with French Labour Minister Charles Pomaret in December, 1939. Time said of the events following the meeting, "Minister Pomaret clamped down on French labour with a set of drastic wage-&-hour decrees and Sir Walter Citrine agreed to a proposal by Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir John Simon that pay rises in Britain be stopped"^[6]

Citrine sued the Daily Worker for libel after it accused him and his associates of "plotting with the French Citrines to bring millions of Anglo-French Trade Unionists behind the Anglo-French imperialist war machine"; the publisher pleaded the British press equivalent of 'fair comment'. Citrine alleged, in response to his lawyer's questioning, that the Daily Worker received £2000 pounds per month from "Moscow", and that Moscow directed the paper to print anti-war stories.^[6]

On 3 September 1939, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain spoke to the nation on the BBC, at which time he announced the formal declaration of war between Britain and Nazi Germany. Backed by his political ally, Party General Secretary Harry Pollitt, Daily Worker editor J. R. Campbell sought to portray the conflict against Hitler as a continuation of the anti-fascist fight.^[7] This went against the Comintern position, which became CPGB policy on 3 October, that the war was a struggle between rival imperialist powers, and Campbell was removed as editor as a result. It responded to the assassination of Leon Trotsky by a Soviet agent with an article on 23 August 1940 entitled "A Counter Revolutionary Gangster Passes", written by former editor Campbell.^[8]

Because of its pro-Soviet position during the war, the Daily Worker was suppressed by the wartime coalition's (Labour) Home Secretary, Herbert Morrison, between 21 January 1941 and 7 September 1942, when the ban was lifted following a campaign supported by Hewlett Johnson, the Dean of Canterbury, and Professor J. B. S. Haldane. A "Lift the ban" conference at Central hall, Westminster on 21 March 1942 was attended by over 2,000 delegates. A key part of the campaign was to secure Labour Party support (Herbert Morrison was a fierce opponent of the Daily Worker). On 26 May 1942, after a heated debate, the Labour Party carried a resolution declaring the Government must lift the ban on the Daily Worker. During the ban the Daily Worker offices at Cayton Street were totally destroyed by fire during The Blitz on 16 April 1941. The paper moved temporarily in 1942 to the former Caledonian Press offices in Swinton Street (from where the old Communist Party Sunday Worker edited by William Paul had been printed from 15 March 1925 until 1929). In 1945 new offices were acquired at a former brush makers warehouse at 75 Farringdon Road, London EC1 for the sum of £48,000. A Scottish edition of the Daily Worker was produced from its plant in Glasgow starting on 11 November 1940.

Since September 1945 the paper has been owned and published by a readers' co-operative, the People's Press Printing Society, which operates on a one-vote-per-shareholder basis.

The last edition of the Daily Worker came out on Saturday 23 April 1966, being re-launched as the Morning Star, the first edition of which appeared the following Monday, 25 April 1966. An editorial in the final issue declared:

"On Monday this newspaper takes its greatest step forward for many years. It will be larger, it will be better and it will have a new name.... During its 36 years of life our paper has stood for all that is best in British working-class and Socialist journalism. It has established a reputation for honesty, courage and integrity. It has defended trade unionists, tenants, pensioners. It has consistently stood for peace. It has always shown the need for Socialism. Let all Britain see the Morning Star, the inheritor of a great tradition and the herald of a greater future".

Editorial policy[link]

The paper supported the National Union of Mineworkers during the miners' strike of 1984–1985, and it still campaigns for the coal industry to be rebuilt. It adopts the phrase "clean coal" to emphasise that the environmental impact of mining must be taken into account. The 2006 energy review by the Blair administration was criticised for not giving enough consideration to clean coal energy.^[9]

On international issues the paper advocates a "two-state" solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and calls for Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territories. It was the only daily paper in Britain to oppose the Kosovo War,^{[citation needed]} denouncing North Atlantic Treaty Organization military intervention, and consistently defended Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, according to other far-left publications.^[10] It opposed the Iraq War .

On Northern Ireland the paper takes a pro-Irish nationalism line. News reports from Northern Ireland are described as "By Our Foreign Desk".

Successive annual general meetings of the People's Press Printing Society have agreed that the policy of the paper is founded on Britain's Road to Socialism, the programme of the Communist Party of Britain;^[11] in its earlier forms before 1985, the programme of the CPGB. However, despite this relationship with the CPB,^[12] features are contributed by writers from a variety of socialist, social democratic, green and religious perspectives.

Generally, the paper supports peace and socialism. It is Eurosceptic and supported the No2EU platform in the 2009 European Parliament election. It is critical of the upper or ruling classes. It defends peaceful protests and civil disobedience and industrial action by workers to improve working conditions and wages. The Morning Star is concerned with environmental issues and supports environment campaigning groups; it advocates unilateral nuclear disarmament. In elections the paper endorses the Communist Party of Britain; where the CPB is not standing, the paper advocates a vote for the Labour Party.

Contributors and staff[link]

In the first years of the twenty-first century the paper has carried contributions from Uri Avnery, John Pilger, Green activist Derek Wall, ex-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell, Green MP Caroline Lucas, Respect MP George Galloway, former MP Alan Simpson, the cartoonist Martin Rowson, and many trade union general secretaries.

According to John Haylett:

" ... We have articles from people that at one time we would never have given the time of day to – like the Welsh and Scottish Nationalists, the Greens, and regular contributions from church people ... [but] ... things that happened in the Soviet Union 70 years ago are still being used as a stick to beat the Morning Star."".^[1]

On 1 January 2009, Bill Benfield took over as editor of the Morning Star.^[13] John Haylett, who had been editor since 1995, took up the post of political editor. Bill Benfield had previously been deputy editor and head of production.

Finances and circulation[link]

The Morning Star carries little commercial advertising, with low advertising rates,^[14] and the cover price does not cover print and distribution. Consequently, the paper has always been dependent on donations from activists, readers, and trade unions. The paper relies on its "Star Fund" appeal (monthly target £16,000).^[15] In its past, the paper received subsidy from the Soviet Union in the form of bulk orders. In 1981, its circulation was about 36,000 (down from the Daily Worker's 1947 peak of 122,000).^[16]

In March 2005, BBC News Magazine reported the Morning Star's circulation as between 13,000 and 14,000, quoting John Haylett's comment "perhaps only one in 10 of these readers would label themselves as communists",^[1] while in August 2006, The Guardian reported the print run to be "around 25,000".^[17]

The Morning Star has also taken a much higher profile at trade union gatherings and within the UK trade union movement, particularly with unions such as Unite, GMB, and RMT. Since 2008, the Morning Star has hired exhibition space at the Trades Union Congress, with sponsored copies being handed out to delegates and a special deal with a large independent newsagent Martin McColl to provide copies of the paper at half the cover price for a limited period for delegates who opted for home delivery of the newspaper.

During the early morning of 28 July 2008, the offices of the newspaper were damaged by fire,^[18] and the edition of 29 July took a reduced form.

On 1 June 2009, the Morning Star was re-launched. The re-launch included a 16-page edition during the week, and a 24-page weekend edition. There was also an expanded use of colour pictures and graphics, plus a redesign and a modern layout of the pages. The Morning Star also redesigned its website. In addition a number of new and experienced journalists were engaged and the positions of full-time Industrial Correspondent and Lobby Correspondent in the House of Commons were reintroduced.

In November 2011, the Morning Star launched an urgent appeal to raise £75,000 in order to address a number of funding issues which meant the paper might have gone under by the end of the year.^[19]

Online version[link]

An online version of the paper was launched on 1 April 2004. Initially only some parts of the site were free, including a PDF of the paper's front page, the editorial "Star Comment" and all the articles from the culture and sports pages, while features and the actual news were subscription only. On 1 January 2009 this policy was changed, and now all content is freely available online.^[20] In April 2012, the paper launched a daily e-edition of the full newspaper, which readers can subscribe to for a small charge.

The Morning Call is a daily newspaper based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the United States.^[2] The newspaper is owned by the Tribune Company, whose other publications include the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and Baltimore Sun.^[3]

The Morning Call serves a nine-county region of eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey and is the largest circulation newspaper of the Lehigh Valley, the third most populous region of Pennsylvania. It once ranked among the nation's top 100 largest-circulation newspapers,^[4] with circulation of 109,000 daily readers and 148,000 Sunday readers. As of October 2010, circulation is now 94,859 daily readers and 121,168 Sunday readers.^[1]

The Morning Call traces its beginnings to May 26, 1883, when Samuel S. Woolever started The Critic, a Saturday evening weekly.^[5] The Critic became a morning newspaper in late 1883, switched to a Sunday weekly a year later and resumed daily publication as the Daily Morning Critic in 1887. Woolever sold the Critic to a group of partners in 1894, and on January 1 of the following year, the paper appeared under the name The Morning Call for the first time.^[6]

David A. Miller, a reporter for the Critic, and his brother Samuel began investing in the newspaper around this time. By 1904, the two brothers had bought out the last of the original partners.^[5] In 1906, the Call joined the Associated Press, adding national and world news coverage to its pages. The early part of the century was a lively era for newspaper publishing. Besides the Call, Allentown's daily papers included the Daily City Item, Allentown Democrat and Chronicle and News, an evening newspaper that dated to 1870. Within a little more than a decade, the local newspaper scene would change considerably.^[6]

In 1920, Harry C. Trexler, the region’s top industrialist, put together an investors group to acquire The Call. Through a series of mergers, Allentown Call Publishing Co. was formed, leaving the Chronicle and News as the Call's primary rival. The next year, 1921, the newspaper began publishing a Sunday edition, the Sunday Morning Call.^[5][6] After Trexler's death in 1933, David Miller, who still held a financial interest in the paper, resumed control, along with two other partners. In 1935, the Call took over the Chronicle and News. Three years later, in 1938, the Sunday edition was renamed the Sunday Call-Chronicle, and the following year, the Chronicle and News became The Evening Chronicle.^[6]

The Miller family continued to oversee the newspapers for the next four decades. Following David Miller's death in 1958, his sons, Donald P. and Samuel W., succeeded him as publishers. Samuel died in 1967, and soon afterwards, Donald’s son, Edward D. Miller, joined him in running the papers. However, the Chronicle was discontinued in 1980, its 90th year, and Edward left the business the following year.^[5] Call-Chronicle Newspapers, Inc., was sold in 1984 to the Times Mirror Company, one of the country's top five newspaper companies.^[7] In 2000, the Tribune Company acquired Times Mirror and with it, The Morning Call.^[3]

The newspaper teams with the polling institute of Muhlenberg College to publish its surveys of preferences and trends among Pennsylvanians.^[8]

Jason Upton (born December 15, 1973) is an American Christian singer-songwriter, musician, recording artist and composer. His musical creations are mostly Christian worship songs inspired by folk music. Jason Upton is evolving on the margins of the Christian music industry through his own record label Key of David Ministries.^[1] However, some of his music has been distributed by major Christian labels such as Sparrow Records (EMI), Gotee Records and Integrity Music.

His multiple tours around the world, his appearances at services in Lou Engle's movement The Call and on CBN’s 700 Club talk show made him known by the American public as well as internationally. His music is mostly covered by Christian media such as Relevant Magazine,^[2] Crosswalk,^[3][4] Christianity Today^[5] and Cross Rhythms.^[6]

Jason Upton was born on December 15, 1973 in Minneapolis and was adopted by a Christian family in March 1974.^[7][8] He has Native American roots since his biological father was a Cherokee.^[9]

Events and tours[link]

Jason Upton regularly tours in the United States, Canada, Europe and South America,^[10] leading worship in churches and at conferences, including Onething. He has rarely appeared on television, although he has appeared at least twice on the 700 Club. He is not regularly played on mainstream Christian radio. During worship services he not only plays the piano or keyboard, or acts as the lead vocalist, he also teaches and encourages the congregation.

Musical career[link]

Upton released his first CD, Key of David, in 2000. It was recorded live in Virginia Beach that year and was produced by Upton's own Key of David Ministries. Over half of the album consists of unrehearsed, spontaneous songs and declarations. Later in 2000, Jason appeared at a National Day of Prayer and Fasting event called 'The Call D.C.'

On August 14, 2001, Jason released his second album Faith, which was also recorded live. Post-production work gave the album a high-quality smooth sound. It was his first on a professional recording, and was released on 40 Records. The title track "Faith" was a spontaneous track, an unplanned song which Jason referred to in the liner notes of the album as a 'Spirit Song'. While it differed from Key of David, the album was well received.

In 2002, he released two independent CDs that were his first to have been recorded in the studio, at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Jacob's Dream contained songs that were more introspective and meditative in nature than his previous works. Dying Star was a larger project and concentrated more on destruction of personal pride and complete submission to what Upton sees as God's plan and not what the mainstream church envisions. That same year, he collaborated with other Christian artists on a Keith Green tribute entitled Your Love Broke Through: The Worship Songs of Keith Green. He re-recorded "You Are The One" for this project, further exposing him to mainstream Christian audiences. He also led worship at The Call New York that year.

Stewart was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.^[1][2][3] Her father, John Stewart, is a stage manager and television producer who has worked for Fox.^[4] Her mother, Jules Mann-Stewart, is a script supervisor originally from Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia.^[3][5][6][7] She has an older brother, Cameron Stewart, and an adopted brother, Taylor.^[8][9] Stewart attended school until the seventh grade and then continued her education by correspondence.^[3] She has since completed high school.^[10]

Her whole family all worked behind the camera and Stewart thought she would become a writer/director, but never considered being an actor. "I never wanted to be the center of attention – I wasn't that 'I want to be famous, I want to be an actor' kid. I never sought out acting, but I always practiced my autograph because I love pens. I'd write my name on everything."^[11] Stewart's acting career began at the age of eight, after an agent saw her perform in her elementary school's Christmas play.^[12] After a year of auditioning, Stewart's first role was a small nonspeaking part in the Disney Channel original film The Thirteenth Year.^[4] Then, she had another part in the film The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas as the "ring toss girl".^[4] She subsequently appeared in the independent film The Safety of Objects, in which she played the tomboy daughter of a troubled single mother (Patricia Clarkson). Stewart also played a tomboy in the film Panic Room, playing the diabetic daughter of a divorced mother (Jodie Foster). She was nominated for a Young Artist Award for her performance.^[13]

After Panic Room's success, Stewart was cast in another thriller, Cold Creek Manor, playing the daughter of Dennis Quaid's and Sharon Stone's characters. She was again nominated for a Young Artist Award for her performance.^[13] It was revealed that at about this time in her career, she had to be homeschooled due to her irregular schedule, which was affecting her grades. She said, "I started homeschooling because my teachers were failing me. I think it was just resentment – I made more work for them. But homeschooling is great; you can study what you want, which allows you to get more excited about what you're doing".^[13]

2004–07[link]

Her first starring role followed, in the children's action-comedy Catch That Kid, opposite Max Thieriot and Corbin Bleu. Stewart also played the role of Lila in the thriller Undertow. Stewart starred in the Lifetime/Showtime television film Speak (2004), based on the novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. Stewart, 13 at the time of filming, played high school freshman Melinda Sordino, who stops almost all verbal contact after being raped.

In 2005, Stewart appeared in the fantasy-adventure film Zathura, playing the role of Lisa, the irresponsible older sister of two little boys, who turn their house into a spacecraft hurtling uncontrollably in outer space by playing a board game. The film received praise by critics, but Stewart's performance did not garner much media attention, as it was noted that her character is immobilized during most of the film.^[14] The following year, she played the character Maya in Fierce People, directed by Griffin Dunne. After that film, she received the lead role of Jess Solomon in the supernatural thriller film The Messengers.

In 2007, Stewart appeared as teenager Lucy Hardwicke in In the Land of Women, a romantic drama starring Meg Ryan and Adam Brody. The film, as well as Stewart's performance, received mixed reviews. That same year, Stewart appeared in the Sean Penn-directed adaptation film Into the Wild. For her portrayal of Tracy – a teenage singer who has a crush on young adventurer Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch) – Stewart received mixed reviews. While Salon.com considered her work a "sturdy, sensitive performance",^[15] and the Chicago Tribune noted that she did "vividly well with a sketch of a role",^[16] Variety's critic Dennis Harvey said, "It's unclear whether Stewart means to be playing hippie-chick Tracy as vapid, or whether it just comes off that way."^[17] After Into the Wild, Stewart had a cameo appearance in Jumper and also appeared in What Just Happened, which was released in October 2008.^[18] She also co-starred in The Cake Eaters an independent film that has only been screened at film festivals.
