New York Times Photojournalist Tyler Hicks in Afghanistan 2008
www.billgentile.com In the spring of 2008 I was embedded with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) in Afghanistan's Helmand River Valley near the border with Pakistan. I was on assignment as a backpack video journalist for NOW on PBS, one of the last and best long-form news magazine programs on American television. New York Times photojournalist Tyler Hicks also accompanied the 24th MEU's Alpha Company as the Marines conducted a major operation in the area. I believe this video shows Tyler's professionalism, tenacity, and dedication to craft that have made him one of the top photojournalists in the world. Tyler is one of four New York Times employees captured recently by Libyan forces. The government of Libya has promised to release all four. I hope that happens very soon. - Bill Gentile Washington, DC 19 March 2011

Photojournalism and Photography Techniques: Tips From Ed Kashi
Award-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi joins us today on the Marc Silber Show to share tips on advancing your photography. His photojournalism work has covered a wide range of global issues and been featured in magazines such as The National Geographic, TIME, and Newsweek. Ed sees himself as a long-form visual storyteller and dedicates himself to telling stories of social or political significance. He often refers to the phrase "candid intimacy" for his work - people often look at his work and ask "How do you get so close to the people, but make it look like they don't know you're there?" When a photo achieves "candid intimacy," the observer is able to see into the soul of the subject. It is tough to achieve candid intimacy, especially when people are adverse to having their photos taken. More and more of his work is being shot from his hip or his shoulder, to avoid provoking people who are not favorable to the lens. Sometimes the best magic appears in images that are shot without staring into the viewfinder. Ed emphasizes that it is crucial to maintain an open heart and open mind, instead of settling for what one sees on the surface. Cameras are a passport into another world that you would never experience otherwise.

Capt. Willard (Martin Sheen), already on the edge, is assigned to find and deal with AWOL Col. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), rumored to have set himself up in the Cambodian jungle as a local, lethal godhead. Along the way Willard encounters napalm and Wagner fan Col. Kilgore (Robert Duvall), draftees who prefer to surf and do drugs, a USO Playboy Bunny show turned into a riot by the raucous soldiers, and a jumpy photographer (Dennis Hopper) telling wild, reverent tales about Kurtz. Photojournalist Tyson Zoltan Heder beaten and detained by LAPD at Occupy Los Angeles
Photojournalist Tyson Zoltan Heder, who was photographing the events of Occupy Los Angeles and the LAPD evicting the protesters, was beaten by the police and had his camera taken, and then he was detained and charged with "assault", and at the time of uploading this video he remains in police custody. Watch the video and see if you can see anyone doing any "assault" to anyone else. I'll give you a hint: Tyson isn't the perpetrator of any assault, he's the one who GETS assaulted. twitter.com www.facebook.com @FreeTysonHeder #FreeTysonHeder Tyson's website: sexwithdonuts.com Video courtesy of KCAL, CBS affiliate in Los Angeles (videos of this incident keep getting taken off YouTube and off their website so hopefully this won't get taken down, but this video is needed as evidence of police brutality and Tyson Zoltan Heder's innocence so I certainly have no plans of taking it down, this is fair use under copyright law and it is also legal evidence so anyone who tries to get me to take this video down is trying to destroy evidence).

This is the video from the breaking up of the party. After the first tear gas grenade went past me I started to lose my vision. I made the mistake of holding my breath. After that, I took a huge breath in of tear gas. Bad choice. Lost my vision when the person kicked the tear gas into Coty Giannelli. © Copyright 2012 Philip M. Botta, All rights reserved. André Kertész - Photojournalist 1894- 1985
"André Kertész 1894 -- 1985, born Kertész Andor, was a Hungarian-born photographer known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and the photo essay. In the early years of his career, his then-unorthodox camera angles and style prevented his work from gaining wider recognition. Kertész never felt that he had gained the worldwide recognition he deserved. Today he is considered one of the seminal figures of photojournalism. Expected by his family to work as a stock broker, Kertész pursued photography independently as an autodidact, and his early work was published primarily in magazines, a major market in those years. This continued until much later in his life, when Kertész stopped accepting commissions. He served briefly in World War I and moved to Paris in 1925, then the artistic capital of the world, against the wishes of his family. In Paris he worked for France's first illustrated magazine called VU. Involved with many young immigrant artists and the Dada movement, he achieved critical and commercial success. Due to German persecution of the Jews and the threat of World War II, Kertész decided to emigrate to the United States in 1936, where he had to rebuild his reputation through commissioned work. In the 1940s and 1950s, he stopped working for magazines and began to achieve greater international success. His career is generally divided into four periods, based on where he was working and his work was most prominently known. They are called ...
