Barclays Chief Executive Bob Diamond has announced his resignation this morning with immediate effect, over an interest rate-rigging scandal. He is the highest-profile victim so far in a probe that spans a dozen major banks across the world. This follows the resignation on Monday of the Chairman, Marcus Agius. After the chairman's resignation, politicians and shareholders continued to call for the chief executive's resignation. Agius will however temporarily take over the running of Barclays until a replacement is found. In a statement released by Mr Diamond he said 'I am stepping down because the external pressure on the bank risked "damaging the franchise' The move comes less than a week after the bank was fined a record amount by regulators in the UK and US for trying to manipulate inter-bank lending rates. Which underpin trillions of pounds worth of financial transactions. Prime Minister David Cameron has launched an inquiry into banking standards, describing the rigging of Libor rates as "a scandal". Mr Diamond will however still appear before MPs on the Treasury Committee to answer questions about the Libor affair on Wednesday. Written and Presented by Ann Salter Related article

They had been working in an Afghan Police Advisory Team. Their next-of-kin have been informed. The incident happened at Checkpoint Kamparack Pul in Nahr-e-Saraj, where the soldiers were attending a shura, or meeting of elders. They were shot at as they were leaving the checkpoint. Major Ian Lawrence, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "It is with deep regret that I must inform you that three soldiers, two serving with 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and one serving with the Royal Corps of Signals, have been killed in an incident at Check Point Kamparack Pul in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand Province. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely difficult time." The deaths bring the total number of members of UK forces to have died since operations in Afghanistan began in October 2001 to 422. Related article

UK pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline will plead guilty and pay a record breaking $3bn, to settle the largest case of healthcare fraud in US history. The settlement comes after a probe by the US Justice Department that investigated the company's marketing practices for nine of its products. GlaxoSmithKline pleaded guilty to misbranding the drugs Paxil, Wellbutrin and Avandia. Prosecutors claimed the company had encouraged the use of anti-depressant drug Paxil for children, even though it was not approved by anyone under the age of 18. Wellbutrin was also pushed for uses it was not approved for, including weight loss and sexual dysfunction. GSK failed to report safety data about diabetes drug Avandia to the Food and Drug Administration. James Cole, Deputy Attorney General, spoke out in support of the criminal charges. "We are determined to stop practices that jeopardize patient's health, harm taxpayers and violate the public trust." The settlement amounts to $1bn in criminal fess and a further $2bn in civil fees after the company went to great lengths to promote the drugs, such as providing meals and spa treatments to doctors that prosecutors' stated amounted to illegal kickbacks. GlaxoSmithKline have agreed to be monitored by US government officials for the next five years. Written and Presented by Alfred Joyner Related article
