Syrian president agrees to Russian-led peace talks

After several months of violence between anti-government rebels and Bashar al-Assad's government, the first step to peace has been taken. This weekend Syria made headlines when China and Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to replace the current government. Many criticized the two countries for the veto but now Russia has influenced al-Assad to meet with the anti-government leaders in Moscow. According to some reports, the head of the Syrian National Council has rejected the Moscow invitation and will only talk until al-Assad steps down. Marina Portnaya, RT correspondent, gives us the latest on the Syrian peace talks. Like us and/or follow us: twitter.com www.facebook.com Related article
Japan starts up two nuclear reactors
Japan starts up two nuclear reactors

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced that he had approved the restarting of two nuclear reactors to avoid an imminent energy crisis. All fifty of the country's reactors were shut down following the meltdown at Fukushima. Before that, atomic energy produced nearly thirty percent of Japan's electricity. Despit recent surveys showing most people in Japan want to abandon atomic energy, the prime minister said he had no choice -- parts of the country are facing a severe power shortage. After the prime minister's announcement, thousands of angry protesters gathered outside Noda's official residence to show their discontent. Ministers say the alternative to nuclear energy, fossil fuels, would drive up electricity bills, harm small businesses and still leave a severe power deficit. Noda is hoping that the promise of tougher safety measures will help avoid another Fukushima -- but many do not agree with his decision. Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane reports. Merkel: Growth and employment pact is first on agenda, then fiscal pact
1:04
On arriving at the June 28 EU Summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she hopes to see an agreement on the growth and employment pact in the first meeting of the council. "During the first day of the European Summit we are going to discuss the growth and employment pact. We have worked on a good programme, especially concerning future investments but also for employment increase for young people. I hope we can agree today on this pact and to send a signal in complementing the fiscal pact, so that we show that we want fiscal stability on the one hand, but also growth on the other. 20% of young people in Europe have no job and if we want to convince the people of Europe, we have to do everything possible to increase employment." Teddy Roosevelt charging up the San Juan Heights, the Rough Riders and the sinking of the battleship, the USS Maine---these are what people commonly know about the United States' war with Spain in 1898. What they may not remember is that this was the war that steered the United States to center stage as a world power. Victorious over Spain in Cuba and the Philippines, the United States, a nation founded in opposition to imperialism, grappled with its new role as an imperial power. More recent events in Vietnam, Somalia, and Yugoslavia bear striking parallels to those of 1898. Even in its own time, the war with Spain was understood as a turning point in American history. Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit
Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit

EU leaders are gathering in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss how to kick-start growth in Europe while keeping deficits down. New French President Francois Hollande has increasingly been putting pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to reconsider her negative views on Euro bonds, bonds jointly underwritten by all eurozone member states. Hollande warned on Saturday during a G8 Summit in Camp David that he is not alone in supporting the proposal. Italy's Monti, Spain's Rajoy and the EC are expected to back the idea. As the biggest economy in Europe, mutualizing common European debt would mean Germany having to finance sovereign debt from other countries. Merkel has already said she does not rule out euro bonds as a long-term prospect, but under one condition: a more integrated political and fiscal European Union. Cube Spin Greece and the unofficial talk of a Greek euro exit are also set to be discussed. After the elections earlier this month, the Greek political parties failed to form a government, so new elections have been called for the 17th of June, less than two weeks before the next EU summit. Radical left-wing group Syriza is set to become the biggest political party and they completely oppose the severe austerity measures imposed by Brussels and the IMF. The European commission wants Greece to stay inside the euro area. Because of the political disagreements, talk of a Greek euro exit is no longer taboo. It's a prospect that certainly will be discussed again in ... Related article

Obama Health Care Law Heads to Supreme Court Today

A question at the heart of the American experiment--the reach of federal power--returns to the Supreme Court Monday, when the justices open three days of argument over President Barack Obama's health-care overhaul. At issue, the administration's allies say, is Congress' constitutional power to address national problems with comprehensive solutions. In jeopardy, critics counter, is a concept of liberty that disables the national government from entire categories of regulation, reserving essential decisions over health and safety to the states. ERIC HOLDER HELD IN CONTEMPT BY HOUSE PANEL - JUNE 20, 2012

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress despite a last-minute intervention by President Obama. By a vote of 23 to 17 after nearly six hours of tense discussion, the bipartisan committee voted for contempt over the Justice Department's decision to withhold documents related to Operation Fast and Furious that were subpoenaed by the committee in their investigation of the failed gunwalking operation. The votes were sharply divided along partisan lines with all Republicans voting for and all Democrats voting against contempt. The measure now moves to the full House for a vote. Moments before the hearing, Holder, who was not present at the hearing, delivered a letter to committee chair Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) informing the committee that Obama exerted executive privilege to withhold the documents in question. "Although we are deeply disappointed that the Committee appears intent on proceeding with a contempt vote, the Department remains willing to work with the Committee to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues," Deputy Attorney General James Cole wrote in a letter to Issa. But the president's intervention did not stop Issa from proceeding with Wednesday's vote. "This untimely assertion by the Justice Department falls short of any reason to delay today's proceedings," Issa said prior to the vote. Many committee members Wednesday invoked the name of Brian ... Related article
