What is syphilis?
Syphilis (pronounced: siff-ill-iss) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a type of bacteria known as a spirochete (through a microscope, it looks like a corkscrew or spiral). It is extremely small and can live almost anywhere in the body. The spirochetes that cause syphilis can be passed from one person to another through direct contact with a syphilis sore during sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral sex). The infection can also be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. You cannot catch syphilis from a towel, doorknob, or toilet seat. In the 1990s there was a decrease in the number of people infected with syphilis. However, more recently there has been a steady increase in reported cases of syphilis, especially in young adults and in men who have male sexual partners. In its early stages, syphilis is easily treatable. However, if left untreated, it can cause serious problems — even death. So it's important to understand as much as you can about this disease. What Are the Symptoms? Syphilis occurs in several different stages: Primary Syphilis In the first stage of syphilis, red, firm, and sometimes wet sores that don't hurt appear on the vagina, rectum, penis, or mouth. There is often just one sore, but there may be several. This type of sore is called a chancre (pronounced: shang-ker). Chancres appear on the part of the body where the spirochetes moved from one person to another. Someone with syphilis may also have swollen glands during this ...

Learn About Syphilis
Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. it's an unpleasant looking bacterial infection that is obtained by sexual intercourse. Syphilis is widespread in the USA and usually occurs in sexually active adults ages 20 to 29. Symptoms are different in each stage of syphilis. Pregnant women can infect their fetus with syphilis. The primary stage of this disease starts with painless sores on the body. Usually around the areas of the genitals, rectum, and mouth. You start to see these 2-3 weeks after first infection. The sores disappear in about 4-6 weeks even without a treatment. The bacteria from syphilis in your body now becomes inactive during this part of the primary stage. The secondary stage of syphilis occurs in about 33% of people who have not had treatment for the first stage of syphilis 2-8 weeks after the first sores disappear. This stage will start with a rash somewhere on your body. The rash often appears on the palms of your hands. These symptoms will also go away without treatment and again, the bacteria becomes inactive in your system. If all these stages go without treatment, you develop tertiary syphilis which is the final stage of syphilis. The infection spreads to the brain, nervous system, heart, skin, and bones. The dormant bacteria may be detectable either by visually seeing the side effects which isnt that hard to see, or through a blood test for syphilis. This stage can happen years after all the other stages ...

Syphilis is a bacterial disease that affects both men and women. In the primary stage, the symptoms of Syphilis include a genital ulcer that is painless that may or may not be seen and in the secondary stage of Syphilis, that may include a generalized body rash that also includes the palms and the soles. Syphilis can reoccur if it is not treated. The symptoms can leave and then come back if it is not treated; however, if it is treated, the symptoms can reoccur if there is re-infection. Untreated Syphilis after many years can affect the brain and it usually manifests as dementia.

Syphilis Laboratory - Guatemala
Legacy of US syphilis experiments still plagues Guatemala To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Obama may have apologised last year for the 1940s US medical experiments that intentionally infected Guatemalans with syphilis, but as this startling report shows, its legacy continues to destroy lives. Soldiers, prostitutes, the mentally ill and even orphaned children; no one was safe from the American government's decision to deliberately infect them with syphilis. The costs are still being felt today in Guatemala as the infected and their descendants, who have inherited the disease, all bear the painful scars of those experiments. Dr Cutler moved his base when he was banned from practising in the States, after watching the effects of syphilis on African-American men who had no idea they were infected. Treating the disease "would interfere with the study", Cutler said. All are victims of a "serious crime" says the lawyer pressing a lawsuit against the US government on behalf of the Guatemalans. Obama's apology for this atrocity is a start but it isn't enough to mend the ruined lives of the surviving human guinea pigs. A Film By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures July 2011

Do I Have Syphilis? Signs and Symptoms of Syphilis
Learn the signs and symptoms of syphilis. See a doctor, get tested, and follow their instructions if you have symptoms of any sexually transmitted infection or think you may have been exposed to one. Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause serious illness. Having an active syphilis infection increases the risk you will get HIV or give HIV to someone else. HIV is incurable and can be fatal. If you are a pregnant woman, syphilis increases the risk that the pregnancy will end in miscarriage, death of the baby at birth or in infancy, or permanent disabilities for your baby. Fortunately, syphilis can be diagnosed with a blood test and cured with antibiotics. You can have syphilis without knowing it. The symptoms are not always noticeable. If you think you may have been exposed to or infected with any sexually transmitted infection, see a doctor and get tested whether or not you have any symptoms. All pregnant women should be checked for syphilis, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections. Syphilis is usually transmitted by vaginal, oral, or anal sexual contact. The second most common way syphilis is transmitted is from mother to child during the pregnancy, or during delivery. You can also get syphilis by kissing on or near a syphilis sore or by touching an infected area on the person. Soon after infection, a sore develops that is usually round, hard, raised, and painless. Usually the sore is on the genitals, hands, or mouth. Usually, there is ...

12. Syphilis: From the "Great Pox" to the Modern Version
Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) There is a longstanding debate over the origins of syphilis, in which arguments over how the disease arrived in Europe have historically been linked to racist and xenophobic ideologies as well as to scientific and historical research. Whatever its provenance, the major syphilis epidemic of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries spread in the train of war, alongside Charles VIII of France's armies. Syphilis was distinguished both by its catholicity, targeting kings as well as paupers, and its mode of transmission. The disease's evident contagiousness served both as grist for a religious interpretation, emphasizing asceticism and divine punishment, and as a major challenge to the humoral theory of disease. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
