Damon and Pythias
1960 directed by Curtis Bernhardt starring Guy Williams, Don Burnett and Ilaria Occhini. Pythias, a liberal Athenian who believes all men are brothers, is condemned to death by Dionysus, the tyrant of Syracuse, who finds this view dangerous. However, Dionysus allows Pythias to return to Athens to visit his ailing wife with the understanding he will then come back to face his punishment. Damon, a friend of Pythias, volunteers to be a hostage to guarantee Pythias's return. Dionysius doesn't expect Pythias to keep his end of the bargain, thus exposing the falsity of his beliefs, but Pythias proves to be a man of his word.

SYRACUSE Siracusa Sicily, Italy
The sea has always been of great importance to the city of Syracuse. Greek colonialists first arrived here by boat and settled in Sicily and thus laid the foundations of the region's future prosperity. The attractive historic centre of the old town is located on the island of Ortygia whose buildings contain almost 2700 years of history. When under the dictatorship of the tyrant Dionysius The First, the town had a population of half a million that even surpassed that of Athens. Following a two year siege in 212 BC, the Romans succeeded in conquering the metropolis. The Teatro Greco is one of the most beautiful amphitheatres of Ancient Greece and at the beginning of the fifth century, dramas and comedies were frequently performed there. It once accommodated up to 50000 spectators. Numerous colorful legends abound of the nearby Ear of Dionysius. The grotto is a wonder of acoustics in which even the most gentle whisper can be heard. Legend has it that, the tyrant Dionysios used the phenomenon to eavesdrop on his prisoners. Siracuse is a fascinating and atmospheric place, steeped in history, myth and legend.

Archaeological Park, Syracuse, Sicily
This Archaeological Park contains a Roman mphitheater and Sicily's largest Greek theater. Also within the park is The Ear of Dionysius (cave) and the Altar of Hieron II. It is a wonderfully laid out park and one should allow a few hours to wander through it. It is a treasure trove of of Roman and Greek structures spanning ten centuries.

Croatia
he area known as Croatia today was inhabited throughout the prehistoric period. Fossils of Neanderthals dating to the middle Paleolithic have been unearthed in the area of Krapina and Vindija. More recent (late Mousterian) Neanderthal remains have been discovered in Mujina pećina near the coast. In the early Neolithic period, the Starčevo, Vučedol and Hvar cultures were scattered around the region. The Iron Age left traces of the Hallstatt culture (early Illyrians) and the La Tène culture (Celts). Much later the region was settled by Liburnians and Illyrians, and Greek colonies were established on the islands of Vis (by Dionysius I of Syracuse) and Hvar.[8] In 9 AD the territory of today's Croatia became part of the Roman Empire. Emperor Diocletian built a massive palace in Split where he retired from politics in AD 305.[9] During the 5th century the last Roman Emperor Julius Nepos[10] ruled his small empire from Diocletian's Palace before he was killed in AD 480. The early history of Croatia ends with the Avar invasion in the first half of the 7th century and the destruction of almost all Roman towns. Roman survivors retreated to strategically better defended points on the coast, islands and mountains. The modern city of Dubrovnik was founded by those survivors.

Damon, Pythias, & the Test of Friendship
Outside of ancient Syracuse on the island of Sicily, there lived a cruel ruler named Dionysius. He trusted no one. Nearby lived two best friends, Damon and Pythias. One day Pythias spoke out against Dionysius, who quickly ordered his execution, to take place in one month. Pythias wanted to return to his elderly parents to say goodbye and arrange for their care. Dionysius laughed, not trusting that Pythias would return. Damon stood up and offered to take Pythias' place until he returned. The ruler agreed only after stipulating that if Pythias did not come back, Damon would die instead. When the execution day arrived, Pythias had not returned, but Damon still believed that his friend would be there if he could. Just in time, Pythias ran in, offering up his own life for his friend's.

Peter Marshall's Italy 4 Part 1 Syracuse
Load up at Gatwick and sit there for a couple of hours because the airport at Catania is undergoing some repair work. Then take a train to Syracuse. See the famous facade of the Cathedral - totally encased in scaffolding. See the spring of Arethusa, from which Nelson took on water on his way to the Nile. See the castle (remains and then walk up to the Greek Theatre where Aeschylus probably saw some of his plays produced. See the 'ear of Dionysius'.

Messina
Soundtrack by Luciano Occhino Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, Italy, and the capital of the province of Messina. It has a population of c. 240000 inhabitants in the city proper and about 500000 in the metropolitan area.It is located near the North-East corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, just opposite Villa San Giovanni which is itself north of Reggio Calabria across the straits, on the mainland. The main economical resource of the city is the port, both commercial and military, with several shipyards. Agriculture includes cultivation of lemons, oranges, mandarin oranges and other fruit, vegetables and wine. The city has been a Roman Catholic Archdiocese and Archimandrite seat since 1548 and is home to a locally important International Fair.Founded by Greek Colonists in the 8th century BC, Messina was originally called Zancle from the Greek: ζάγκλον meaning "scythe" (though a legend exists that attributes the name to King Zanclus), because of the shape of its natural harbour. A comune of its province, located at the southern entrance of the Strait of Messina, is to this day called 'Scaletta Zanclea'. In the early 5th century BC, Anaxilas of Rhegium renamed it Messene in honor of the Greek city Messene (Greek: Μεσσήνη). See also List of traditional Greek place names. The city was sacked in 397 BC by the Carthaginians, then reconquered by Dionysius I of Syracuse. Messina è una città siciliana detta anche "porta della Sicilia" e anticamente ...

Catapult
How a catapult is working, Warwick Castle A catapult is any one of a number of non-handheld mechanical devices used to throw a projectile a great distance without the aid of an explosive substance—particularly various types of ancient and medieval siege engines. The name is the Latinized form of the Ancient Greek καταπέλτης - katapeltes, from κατά - kata (downwards, into, against) and πάλλω - pallo (to poise or sway a missile before it is thrown). The catapult appears to have been invented in 399 BC in the city of Syracuse during the reign of the tyrant Dionysius I. Originally, "catapult" referred to a dart-thrower, while "ballista" referred to a stone-thrower, but the two terms swapped meaning sometime in the fourth century AD (en.wikipedia.org
