Lea Katherine Thompson (born May 31, 1961) is an American actress and director. She is best known for her 1990s NBC situation comedy ''Caroline in the City'' and her portrayal of Lorraine Baines McFly, Marty McFly's mother, in the ''Back to the Future'' trilogy. As a staple in big budget/high profile blockbusters of the 1980s and '90s, other roles include ''Red Dawn'', ''Howard the Duck'', ''Jaws 3-D'', ''Some Kind of Wonderful'', ''The Beverly Hillbillies'' and ''All the Right Moves''.

Early life

Thompson was born in Rochester, Minnesota, the daughter of Barbara, a singer and musician, and Cliff Thompson. She studied ballet as a girl and would practice three to four hours every day. She was dancing professionally by the age of 14. She won scholarships to several ballet schools, including the American Ballet Theatre, the San Francisco Ballet and the Pennsylvania Ballet. Thompson danced in more than 45 ballets with the American Ballet Theatre. She also danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Minnesota Dance Theatre and the Ballet Repertory. Her brother Andrew also took ballet classes and went on to become a professional.

Thompson was told by ballet legend and then ABT artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov that she was "a beautiful dancer, but too stocky." Due to this (as well as some small nagging past injuries), she decided to give up dancing in favor of an acting career. She moved to New York at age 20 and performed in a number of Burger King advertisements in the 1980s along with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elisabeth Shue, her eventual co-star in ''Back to the Future Part II'' and ''Back to the Future Part III''.

Career

Thompson's first significant film roles came in 1983, with ''Jaws 3-D'' and ''All the Right Moves'' (the latter opposite Tom Cruise). These were followed by ''Red Dawn'' (1984) and ''The Wild Life'' (1984). Her most famous role was that of Lorraine Baines McFly in the ''Back to the Future'' trilogy, the first released in 1985. Thompson's character is the mother of Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox.

In 1986, Thompson starred in ''SpaceCamp'' and ''Howard the Duck''. For the latter film, she sang several songs on the soundtrack, in character, as musician Beverly Switzler, who was the lead vocalist for a band called "Cherry Bomb". The recordings appeared on both the soundtrack album and on singles. Rounding out film appearances in the late 1980s, Thompson starred in ''Some Kind of Wonderful'', ''Casual Sex?'', ''Going Undercover'' and ''The Wizard of Loneliness''. She also had a prominent role in the 1989 TV movie ''Nightbreaker'', for which she was nominated for a CableACE Award. In the early 1990s, Thompson starred in ''Dennis the Menace'' (1993), ''The Beverly Hillbillies'' (1993) and ''The Little Rascals'' (1994). She also appeared in several TV movies throughout the 90s, including ''The Substitute Wife'' (1994), ''The Unspoken Truth'' (1995) and ''The Right To Remain Silent'' (1996).

Thompson found moderate critical and popular success as the star of the NBC sitcom ''Caroline in the City'', from 1995-1999. In 1996, Thompson received a People's Choice Award for "Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Series."

After a break from acting, Thompson went on to star in several Broadway plays. She later appeared in a TV series called ''For The People'', which only lasted one season. Then came a TV movie, ''Stealing Christmas'' (2003), starring Tony Danza and Betty White. Thompson also appeared in several episodes of the dramedy series ''Ed'' and in a guest role for one episode in 2004 on NBC's ''Law & Order: Special Victims Unit''; she played a woman whose embryos were stolen.

In 2005, Thompson began a series of made-for-TV movies for the Hallmark Channel, in which she plays "Jane Doe," an ex-secret agent turned housewife, who helps the government solve mysteries. Thompson directed two films from the ''Jane Doe'' series - ''Jane Doe: The Harder They Fall'' and ''Jane Doe: Eye of the Beholder''.

Thompson was a featured singer on ''Celebrity Duets'' and the second contestant eliminated in 2006.

In April 2007, another TV movie, ''A Life Interrupted'', premiered on Lifetime Television. A rape survivor overcomes her debilitating fear by finding funding to process the enormous backlog of rape kits, so that other women will not have to suffer for years as she did.

Thompson guest-starred on the show ''Head Case'' in January 2008. She appeared in the TV movie ''Final Approach'', which debuted in the U.S. on May 24, 2008. Her recent film credits include ''Exit Speed'' and ''Spy School''. She recently starred in the television movie ''The Christmas Clause'', which received good reviews and ratings. She stars in the new films ''Splinterheads'' and ''Prettyface'', and recently filmed the movie ''Adventures of a Teenage Dragonslayer''.

Personal life

Thompson has been married to film director Howard Deutch since 1989. They first met on the set of ''Some Kind of Wonderful''. Thompson had previously been engaged to Dennis Quaid, her ''Jaws 3-D'' co-star.

Thompson and Deutch have two daughters, Madeline (born 1991) and Zoey (born 1994), with whom she sang on stage in the ''Bye Bye Birdie'' production for the 16th annual Alzheimer's Association "A Night at Sardi's" in March 2008. Thompson has stated that her career break to raise her children has helped with her subsequent portrayal of soccer mom Cathy Davis/Jane Doe.

Thompson has four siblings, brothers Andrew (who did go on to be a professional ballet dancer) and Barry, and sisters Colleen, a writer, and Shannon Katona.

Belinda Jo Carlisle (born August 17, 1958) is an American singer and best-selling author who gained worldwide fame as the lead vocalist of the Go-Go's, considered by some to be the most successful all-female band of all time and the first such group since Fanny whose members wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. Topping the ''Billboard'' charts with the Go-Go's, she sold more than seven million albums in just three years and later went on to a successful solo career with hits "Mad About You", "Summer Rain", "I Get Weak", "Leave a Light On" and "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and others, which were major successes in the United States and United Kingdom as well as internationally. Her autobiography, ''Lips Unsealed'', published in June 2010, reached No. 27 on the ''The New York Times'' Best Seller list and received favorable reviews. On August 11, 2011, she received, as a member of the Go-Go's, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Early life

Belinda Carlisle was born in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles to Harold, a travelling salesman (he sold vacuum cleaners) and his wife Joanne, who raised the children at home. The first of seven siblings, with three brothers and three sisters, she was five years old when her father abandoned the family and upon her mother's second marriage, did not have a close relationship with her stepfather, Duke Kurczeski. Growing up in Ventura County's Thousand Oaks, a part of the Greater Los Angeles Area, she was a cheerleader at Newbury Park High School and, at the age of 19, left home.

Early career and The Go-Go's

Carlisle's first venture into music was a brief stint as drummer for the punk band The Germs, under the name Dottie Danger. Around this time Carlisle did some back-up singing for the Black Randy and the Metrosquad. Soon after leaving The Germs, she co-founded The Go-Go's (originally named The Misfits), with friends and fellow musicians Margot Olaverria, Elissa Bello, and Jane Wiedlin. Olaverria and Bello were soon out of the group and the new line-up included bassist-turned-guitarist Charlotte Caffey, guitarist-turned-bassist Kathy Valentine, and drummer Gina Schock. The Go-Go's became one of the most successful American bands of the 1980s, helping usher New Wave music into popular American radio, and becoming the first all-female band, who wrote their own music and played their own instruments, to ever achieve a #1 album. The Go-Go's recorded two more studio albums on I.R.S. Records, including 1982 ''Vacation'', which went gold. "Head over Heels", from their 1984 album ''Talk Show'', made it to #11, but they never repeated the success of their 1981 multi-platinum debut, ''Beauty and the Beat'', which featured the hits "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed".

In 1984, Carlisle made a foray into acting in the movie ''Swing Shift'' starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and performed backing vocals for the Don Henley recording of "She's on the Zoom" from the ''Vision Quest'' soundtrack.

Solo career

The Go-Go's broke up in 1985 and Carlisle embarked on a solo career, although she continued to work with fellow Go-Go Charlotte Caffey.

1986–1987: ''Belinda''

Carlisle's first solo album ''Belinda'' was released in 1986, also on I.R.S. Records. This album was successful in North America and was certified Gold in the U.S. and Platinum in Canada. Her summer hit "Mad About You" peaked at No. 3 in the U.S., topped the Canadian Singles Chart, and charted in the top 10 in Australia. "Mad About You" was followed by the Motown-influenced single "I Feel the Magic", and by a cover version of the Freda Payne song "Band of Gold". All three songs were included on her debut album. The single "Since You've Gone", co-written by Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, was used only for promotion. Susanna Hoffs co-wrote the single "I Need a Disguise". Duran Duran's Andy Taylor played guitar on some album tracks and appeared in her "Mad About You" video clip.

During this time, Carlisle also had songs featured on movie soundtracks, notably "In My Wildest Dreams" from the movie ''Mannequin'' "Shot in the Dark" from the Anthony Michael Hall thriller, ''Out of Bounds'', as well as "Dancing in the City" from the Whoopi Goldberg movie ''Burglar''.

1987–1989: ''Heaven on Earth''

Carlisle changed again her hairstyle significantly for her second solo album, giving up her California Girl blonde bob for a long auburn style for 1987's ''Heaven on Earth''. The musical style eschewed the 1960s-influenced pop of Carlisle's first album in favor of slickly produced 1980s power-pop, and was released in the United States through MCA, and in the United Kingdom through Virgin. The album became a Top 5 bestseller in the UK and Australia, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album's producer, Rick Nowels, previously worked with Stevie Nicks, and would later collaborate with Kim Wilde, Jennifer Rush and Madonna. Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas, Chynna Phillips and Carnie Wilson sang backup for the album. Thomas Dolby played the keyboards on some album tracks.

The first release from ''Heaven on Earth'' was "Heaven Is a Place on Earth", which topped the single charts, not only in the U.S., but also in the UK and in several other countries (the dance mix of the song also topped the dance chart). The radio-ready song was further propelled by a video, directed by Academy Award-winning American actress Diane Keaton. The second single from the album was "I Get Weak", which shot to #2 in the U.S. and #10 in the U.K. The song was written by Diane Warren. The third single from the album was "Circle in the Sand", another Top 10 hit in the U.S., the UK, and Germany. "World Without You" was another British hit, followed by 1988 low-charting ballad "Love Never Dies", making this her fifth single from the album in the UK. In the U.S., the fourth and last single, "I Feel Free", a cover of the Cream classic, failed to reach the Top 40.

After the release of the ''Heaven on Earth'' album, Carlisle embarked on the 'Good Heavens' world tour during which she sold out Wembley Arena in London.

In 2009, a remastered edition of the album was released with extra tracks, remixes, and a bonus DVD containing a complete live concert from 1988 (available for the first time on DVD).

1989–1991: ''Runaway Horses''

Carlisle's follow-up to the success of ''Heaven on Earth'' was ''Runaway Horses'', released on October 23, 1989. The album hit the Top 5 in both Australia and the UK, certified double platinum in Australia and platinum in the UK and in Canada, but failed to reach similar success in the U.S. The first release, "Leave a Light On", peaked at #11 in the U.S., and became another Top 5 smash in the UK, Australia and Canada. The song features a slide guitar solo by George Harrison; he also played on the song ''Deep Deep Ocean''. The second U.S. single, "Summer Rain", reached #30 in early 1990. The song, which Carlisle noted was the most difficult song she had ever sung up to that point, peaked successfully at #6 in Australia, where it has maintained popularity, and the tune saw a cover version, in 2004, by the Australian group Slinkee Minx. It was the final release from ''Runaway Horses'' in the UK where it was released as the album's sixth single in December 1990, peaking at #23 in January 1991. Whereas in the U.S. Carlisle's success was decreasing, her popularity remained big in Europe and Australia. In 1990, further singles from the ''Runaway Horses'' album were successful as well: the title track, the summer mood influenced "La Luna", a Top 10 in Switzerland and top 20 hit in Germany and Australia, and "(We Want) The Same Thing", remixed from a country-styled release into a massive Pop hit, reaching #6 in the UK. Bryan Adams contributed backup vocals for the track "Whatever It Takes".

In the late autumn of 1990, the Go-Go's reunited for a tour to support their first best-of album, ''Greatest'', including a new recording of the cover song "Cool Jerk" (Go-Go's original cover was featured on their 1980 European EP, with a second version being released in 1982). A notable feature of the tour was an anti-fur campaign, where the band members supported People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA, an animal rights organization. That same year, Carlisle joined with The Smithereens lead singer Pat Dinizio on his group's ballad "Blue Period" and also performed backing vocals on Then Jerico's album ''The Big Area'' on the track "What Does It Take?".

1991–1992: ''Live Your Life Be Free''

In 1991, Carlisle released her fourth solo album, ''Live Your Life Be Free''. The album marked somewhat of a return to 1960s-influenced music for Carlisle and included songs mainly written and produced by Rick Nowels but also two songs co-written by Carlisle. The single "Do You Feel Like I Feel?" was accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek video, inspired by the B-movie ''Attack of the 50 Foot Woman''. The title track, "Live Your Life Be Free", released as first single outside the U.S., was a Top 20 hit single in many countries reaching number 12 in the U.K. and #13 in Australia. Subsequent releases "Half the World" and "Little Black Book" (co-written by Marcella Detroit of the Shakespears Sister under her real name Marcy Levy) were also hits outside the U.S., and although ''Live Your Life Be Free'' as an album flopped in the U.S., it was a success in Europe (Top 10 in the UK and Gold certification). To date, "Do You Feel Like I Feel?" is Carlisle's final single to enter in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #73.

1992: ''The Best of Belinda, Volume 1''

Still active in Europe and Australia with a record contract at Virgin Records, her 1992 greatest hits album ''The Best of Belinda, Volume 1'' reached #1, and was certified double platinum in the UK and platinum in Australia. This first greatest hits album included all the hits taken from the ''Heaven on Earth'', ''Runaway Horses'', and ''Live Your Life Be Free'' albums. It neglected the ballad "Love Never Dies", and the three I.R.S. singles from her first album ''Belinda'', as this only received a limited UK release and produced no hit singles there. Also, no movie-soundtrack songs appear on the collection. The U.S. version of the album was named ''Her Greatest Hits'' and also included songs from the first album ''Belinda''.

1993–1994: ''Real''

Carlisle's fifth solo album, ''Real'', was released in 1993 on the Virgin label in the U.S. and in Europe. Produced without Nowels, the disc was a departure from Carlisle's polished pop music formula. Even the album's cover photograph featured her with little or no make-up. Carlisle co-produced and co-wrote much of the disc, collaborating heavily with friend and ex-Go-Go Charlotte Caffey. The album was Carlisle's fifth consecutive to reach the U.K. Top 10 peaking at number #9. Real peaked also at number #23 in Sweden. Its first single, "Big Scary Animal", peaked at #12 in the UK. The second single from ''Real'' was "Lay Down Your Arms", which made the Top 30 in the UK. Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals co-wrote the single "Here Comes My Baby".

At this time, Carlisle also recorded "One by One", on the soundtrack for the 1993 movie ''The Harvest'' and sang on The Lemonheads' ''Come On Feel The Lemonheads'' album on the track "I'll Do It Anyway".

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Carlisle and her family moved to Europe. The Go-Go's reunited again later that year to support the retrospective double-CD ''Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's'', their second collection, which featured three new songs, including the single "The Whole World Lost Its Head". However, the band broke up again, soon after the promotional tour. Carlisle has since lived in France and England.

1996–1997: ''A Woman and a Man''

Carlisle returned to the recording studio, and resumed working again with Rick Nowels. In 1996 she released in the UK and Australia her sixth solo album, ''A Woman and a Man'', on the Chrysalis Records label. This album, consisting of mostly relaxed adult pop, revitalized her solo career in Europe, and included several hits. The leadoff single, "In Too Deep", returned Carlisle to the UK Top 10, for the first time in six years, reaching #6. "Always Breaking My Heart", written and produced by Roxette's Per Gessle, also made the UK Top 10, peaking at #8. The album spawned two more smaller hits in UK: "Love in the Key of C", and "California", which featured arrangement and back-up vocals by Brian Wilson. The album reached #12 in the UK, and was certified gold. As a result of ''A Woman and A Man''s UK success, the album was released in the U.S. during the summer of 1997 on the small Ark21 label. Despite the recent successful comeback in Europe, and the promotional appearances Carlisle made on American television and radio, the album did not enjoy similar success in North America selling only 17,000 copies.

In 1996, Carlisle recorded "I Wouldn't Be Here (If I Didn't Love You)" for the ''Two If by Sea'' official movie soundtrack. In 1997, she recorded "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" from Walt Disney Animation Studios's ''Hercules'' as part of that movie's standard distribution in Europe, and was released as a single exclusively in France and Germany. Neither of these tracks has been released on compilation albums.

1999–2000: ''A Place on Earth: The Greatest Hits''

In 1999, Carlisle released a greatest hits album in the UK, a double-disc on the Virgin label, collectively entitled ''A Place on Earth: The Greatest Hits''. Carlisle recorded three new tracks for the album's first disc, properly called ''The Greatest Hits'', including the single "All God's Children", and the songs "A Prayer for Everyone" and "Feels Like I've Known You Forever". The second disc of the album entitled ''A Place on Earth'', contained previously released remixes of some of her hits, plus a couple of B-sides which were previously unreleased. Some of the remixes were by William Orbit, who also worked with Madonna on her 1998 ''Ray of Light'' album. ''A Place on Earth: The Greatest Hits'' was certified Gold in the UK and went on to sell an excess of one million copies worldwide.

2001: ''Go-Go's Reunion''

In 2001, the Go-Go's reunited again and released an album of new material, ''God Bless The Go-Go's''. Green Day's lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong co-wrote the only released single "Unforgiven". God Bless The Go-Go's received mixed reviews from critics. Rolling Stone wrote "Every bit as Go-Go's, that is, as their non-hits and less remarkable material. While the Go-Go's sound is intact, there is not a "We Got the Beat" or a "Head Over Heels" to be found. It is feasible that in this age of pop rebirth, the Go-Go's decided it was now or never". Allmusic wrote "The album doesn't attempt to update the band's sound with hip-hop moves or electronic frippery, for which God should bless 'em, indeed. The girls' hold on the current pop world remains so strong that Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong co-writes a song ("Unforgiven") in impeccable Go-Go's drag".

The album sold fewer copies than the previous Go-Go's studio albums but still managed to chart in the U.S. Billboard 200, peaking at number #57.

Around the time of the Go-Go's definitive reunion tour, Carlisle appeared nude for the cover feature and a full pictorial of the August 2001 edition of ''Playboy''.

2007: ''Voila''

In 2007, the singer released her seventh album ''Voila'', which was her first full-length, solo studio album in more than ten years. The album was produced by John Reynolds and included Brian Eno on the keyboard. Consisting of a mix of French pop tunes and chanson standards, including covers of Françoise Hardy and Édith Piaf classics. ''Voila'' was released via Rykodisc in the UK on February 5, and in the U.S. the following day, February 6, 2007. Carlisle was originally approached to make another pop rock album, but she declined immediately, in favor of recording this collection of songs, the style of which, she'd "absolutely fallen in love with", since moving to France in the early 1990s.

2008–2010

She recently toured as part of the Regeneration tour in the U.S., and the Here and Now tour in the UK and Ireland in 2008 and summer of 2009. The line up included Carlisle, as well as other acts such as The Human League, Bananarama, Boy George, Howard Jones, Paul Young, Naked Eyes, ABC, T'Pau, and Cutting Crew.

She took over the role of Velma Von Tussle in London's West End production of ''Hairspray'' on October 28, 2009 at the Shaftesbury Theatre. She remained with the show till late January and was replaced by Siobhan McCarthy.

Carlisle announced a Go-Go's farewell tour planned for July 2010,which was then cancelled due to a leg injury suffered by guitarist Jane Wiedlin.

According to her website, Belinda Carlisle is recording new material due for release in 2010, though this has yet to materialise.

Belinda Carlisle performed at Manchester Pride on August 27, 2010. This being her second appearance at this event, with the first being in 2007.

In October 2010, tickets went on sale for a concert tour of Germany in January 2011.

2011

Belinda Carlisle played dates around Australia, commencing on February 4 in Melbourne. She appeared as part of the "Here and Now, 10th Anniversary Tour" at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the 7th of April 2011. Belinda is also touring the US with The Go-Go's. On October 10, 2011, she will be performing at the Araneta Center in Manila, together with The Human League and Howard Jones.

Television appearances

Outside of appearances on tour with The Go-Go's, Carlisle continued her string of TV appearances.

In 2004, Carlisle was the first star to be voted off the UK reality TV show ''Hell's Kitchen''.

In 2006, she appeared on the Simon Cowell-produced ''Celebrity Duets'', a Fox network reality competition, pairing celebrities not famous for singing (like Lucy Lawless and Cheech Marin) with actual singers like Carlisle, Michael Bolton, Jon Secada, Taylor Dayne and Macy Gray. Carlisle sang "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and "I Get Weak" with Lea Thompson on the September 7 episode.

In 2008 she appeared as a judge on the MTV reality show ''Rock the Cradle'', a competition reality show featuring aspiring musicians who were also the children of famous musicians.

In 2009 Carlisle was on the 8th season of ''Dancing with the Stars'', paired with Jonathan Roberts. She was the first star to be eliminated from the competition, on March 17.

In 2011 Carlisle performed on "Good Morning America", Friday June 3 in an appearance for the shows "Summer Concert Series", in New York City's Central Park.

Personal life

In the early 1980s, Carlisle dated Mike Marshall, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In 1986, Carlisle married Morgan Mason, former Special Assistant to the President of the United States and son of British actor James Mason. Mason made appearances in Carlisle's videos "Mad About You" and "Heaven Is a Place on Earth". They have a son, James Duke Mason, born on April 27, 1992.

She has been reported as being "deeply into Buddhism" and chants Nam Myoho Renge Kyo daily. In an interview, printed on March 7, 2007, the singer stated that: "I was wondering about happiness and started reading a lot of books by the Dalai Lama, and slowly embraced Buddhism" (published by Newindpress, India). She told the ''Sydney Morning Herald'': "I don't smoke any more, I don't drink any more and I don't do drugs any more. I am very much into my Buddhism. I found turning 40 a real passage in time for me."

In January 2009, it was announced that Carlisle was appointed the new spokesperson for NutriSystem.

Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov (, ) (born 27 January 1948) is a Soviet-born Russian American dancer, choreographer, and actor, often cited alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. After a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he defected to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in western dance. After freelancing with many companies, he joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer to learn George Balanchine's style of movement. He then danced with the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director.

Baryshnikov has spearheaded many of his own artistic projects and has been associated in particular with promoting modern dance, premiering dozens of new works, including many of his own. His success as a dramatic actor on stage, cinema and television has helped him become probably the most widely recognized contemporary ballet dancer. In 1977, he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his work as "Yuri Kopeikine" in the film ''The Turning Point''.

Biography

Born to Russian parents in Riga, now in independent Latvia, Baryshnikov began his ballet studies there in 1960. In 1964, he entered the Vaganova School, in what was then Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Baryshnikov soon won the top prize in the junior division of the International Varna Competition. He joined the Kirov Ballet and Mariinsky Theater in 1967, dancing the “Peasant” pas de deux in ''Giselle''. Recognizing Baryshnikov's talent, in particular the strength of his stage presence and purity of his classical technique, several Soviet choreographers, including Oleg Vinogradov, Konstantin Sergeyev, Igor Tchernichov, and Leonid Jakobson, choreographed ballets for him. Baryshnikov made signature roles of Jakobson's 1969 virtuosic ''Vestris'' along with an intensely emotional Albrecht in ''Giselle''. While still in the Soviet Union, he was called by ''New York Times'' critic Clive Barnes "the most perfect dancer I have ever seen."

On June 29, 1974, while on tour in Canada with the Bolshoi Ballet, Baryshnikov defected, requesting political asylum in Toronto, and joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He also announced to the dance world he would not go back to the U.S.S.R. He later stated that Christina Berlin, an American friend of his, helped engineer his defection during his 1970 tour of London. His first televised performance after coming out of temporary seclusion in Canada was with the National Ballet of Canada in ''La Sylphide''. He then went on to the United States.

From 1974 to 1978, he was principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), where he partnered with Gelsey Kirkland. He also worked with the New York City Ballet, with George Balanchine and as a regular guest artist with the Royal Ballet. He also toured with ballet and modern dance companies around the world for fifteen months. Several roles were created for him, including roles ''Opus 19: The Dreamer'' (1979), by Jerome Robbins, ''Rhapsody'' (1980), by Frederick Ashton, and ''Other Dances'' with Natalia Makarova by Jerome Robbins. He returned to ABT in 1980 as dancer and artistic director, a position he held for a decade. On July 3, 1986, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. From 1990 to 2002, Baryshnikov was artistic director of the White Oak Dance Project, a touring company he co-founded with Mark Morris. In 2005 he launched the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York.

Artistic career

Dance

Baryshnikov's talent was obvious from his youth, but the Soviet system in which he grew up was ill-suited for developing it. Shorter than most dancers, he could not tower over a ballerina ''en pointe'' and was therefore relegated to secondary parts. More frustrating to him, the Soviet dance world hewed closely to 19th-century traditions and deliberately shunned the creative choreographers of the West, whose work Baryshnikov glimpsed in occasional tours and films. His main goal in leaving the Soviet Union was to work with these innovators; in the first two years after his defection, he danced for no fewer than 13 different choreographers, including Jerome Robbins, Glen Tetley, Alvin Ailey, and Twyla Tharp. "It doesn't matter if every ballet is a success or not," he told ''New York Times'' dance critic Anna Kisselgoff in 1976, "The new experience gives me a lot." He cited his fascination with the ways Ailey mixed classical and modern technique and his initial discomfort when Tharp insisted he incorporate eccentric personal gestures in the dance.

In 1978, he abandoned his freelance career to spend 18 months as a principal of the New York City Ballet, run by the legendary George Balanchine. "Mr. B," as he was known, rarely welcomed guest artists and had refused to work with both Nureyev and Makarova; Baryshnikov's decision to devote his full attentions to the New York company stunned the dance world. Balanchine never created a new work for Baryshnikov, though he did coach the young dancer in his distinctive style, and Baryshnikov triumphed in such signature roles as Apollo, Prodigal Son, and Rubies. Robbins did, however, create ''Opus 19: The Dreamer'' for Baryshnikov and NYCB favorite Patricia McBride. In 1980, he became Artistic Director of American Ballet Theatre and his role changed from performer to director.

Nevertheless, his fascination with the new has stood him in good stead. While his technique has lost its flash, his mastery of gesture and stagecraft remains compelling. As he observed, "It doesn't matter how high you lift your leg. The technique is about transparency, simplicity and making an earnest attempt.” The White Oak Project was formed to create original work for older dancers. In a run ending just short of his 60th birthday in 2007, he appeared in a production of four short plays by Samuel Beckett staged by avant-garde director JoAnne Akalaitis. Joining discipline and charisma, he has fashioned an exceptionally long career and cast a long shadow over the contemporary dance world.

He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999. In 2000, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. He has received three Honorary Degrees: on May 11, 2006, from New York University; on September 28, 2007, from Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University; and on May 23, 2008, from Montclair State University.

For the duration of the 2006 Summer, he went on tour with Hell's Kitchen Dance, which was sponsored by the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Featuring works by Baryshnikov Arts Center residents Azsure Barton and Benjamin Millepied, the company toured the United States and Spain.

In late August 2007 Baryshnikov performed Mats Ek's ''Place'' (original Swedish title, ''Ställe'') with Ana Laguna at Dansens Hus in Stockholm. He has been quoted as saying "dancing is living".

Film and television

Baryshnikov made his American television dancing debut in 1976, on the PBS program ''In Performance Live from Wolf Trap''. During the Christmas season of 1977, CBS brought his highly acclaimed American Ballet Theatre production of Tchaikovsky's classic ballet ''The Nutcracker'' to television, and it has remained to this day the most popular and most often shown television production of the work, at least in the U.S. In addition to Baryshnikov in the title role, Gelsey Kirkland, Alexander Minz, and many members of the American Ballet Theatre also starred. The production was videotaped in Canada. After being shown twice by CBS, it moved to PBS, where it was shown annually every Christmas season for many years, and still is by some PBS stations. It was first released on DVD by MGM/UA. The remastered DVD of the performance, issued by Kultur Video in 2004, is a bestseller during the Christmas season. The DVD has now been released in the UK by Digital Classics.

Although Tchaikovsky's ballet has been presented on TV many times in many different versions, the Baryshnikov version is one of only two to be nominated for an Emmy Award. The other one was Mark Morris' "The Hard Nut," Morris's intentionally exaggerated and satirical version of the ballet.

Baryshnikov also performed in two Emmy-winning television specials, one on ABC and one on CBS, in which he danced to music from Broadway and Hollywood, respectively. During the 1970s and 80s, he appeared many times with American Ballet Theatre on ''Live from Lincoln Center'' and ''Great Performances''. Over the years, he has also appeared on several telecasts of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Baryshnikov performed in his first film role soon after arriving in New York. He portrayed the character Yuri Kopeikine, a famous Russian womanizing ballet dancer, in the 1977 film, ''The Turning Point'', for which he received an Oscar nomination. He co-starred with Gregory Hines and Isabella Rossellini in the 1985 film, ''White Nights'', choreographed by Twyla Tharp; and he was featured in the 1987 film, ''Dancers.'' On television, in the last season of ''Sex and the City'', he played a Russian artist, Aleksandr Petrovsky, who woos Carrie Bradshaw relentlessly and takes her to Paris. He co-starred in ''Company Business'' (1991) with Gene Hackman.

On November 2, 2006, Baryshnikov and chef Alice Waters were featured on an episode of the Sundance Channel's original series ''Iconoclasts''. The two have a long friendship. They discussed their lifestyles, sources of inspiration, and social projects that make them unique. During the program, Alice Waters visited Baryshnikov's Arts Center in New York City. The Hell's Kitchen Dance tour brought him to Berkeley to visit Alice Waters' restaurant ''Chez Panisse.''

On July 17, 2007, the PBS ''News Hour with Jim Lehrer'' featured a profile of Baryshnikov and his Arts Center.

Family

Baryshnikov has a daughter, Aleksandra Baryshnikov (born 1981), from his relationship with actress Jessica Lange. When Baryshnikov and Lange met, he spoke very little English. They communicated in French instead.

Baryshnikov is in a long-term relationship with former ballerina Lisa Rinehart. They have had three children together: Peter (born July 7, 1989), Anna (born May 22, 1992), and Sofia (born May 24, 1994). In an interview with Larry King, Baryshnikov said that he didn't believe in marriage because the commitment that people make to each other didn't have anything to do with a legal marriage. He stated that he wasn't religious, so standing in front of an altar would not mean anything to him.

Baryshnikov currently owns a home at the Punta Cana Resort and Club in the Dominican Republic.

Patrick Wayne Swayze (; August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009) was an American actor, dancer and singer-songwriter. He was best-known for his tough-guy roles, as romantic leading men in the hit films ''Dirty Dancing'' and ''Ghost'' and as Orry Main in the ''North and South'' television miniseries. He was named by ''People'' magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991. His film and TV career spanned 30 years.

Diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in January 2008, Swayze told Barbara Walters a year later that he was "kicking it". However, he died from the disease on September 14, 2009. His last role was the lead in an ill-fated A&E; TV series, ''The Beast'', which premiered on January 15, 2009. Due to a prolonged decline in health, Swayze was unable to promote the series. On June 15, 2009, ''Entertainment Tonight'' announced the show's cancellation.

Early life

Patrick Swayze was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas, the second child of Patsy Yvonne Helen (née Karnes; born 1927), a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze (1925–1982), an engineering draftsman. Swayze was raised Roman Catholic. He had two younger brothers, actor Don Swayze (born 1958) and Sean Kyle (born 1962), and two sisters, Vickie Lynn (1949–1994) and Bambi. He was a sixth cousin once removed of news commentator John Cameron Swayze, and a relative of noted Texas Revolution soldier Henry Karnes.

Until the age of twenty, Swayze lived in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston, where he attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, Oak Forest Elementary School, Black Middle School, and Waltrip High School. During this time, he also pursued multiple artistic and athletic skills, such as ice skating, classical ballet, and acting in school plays. He played football for his high school and was hoping to receive a football scholarship for college until a knee injury ended his career. He studied gymnastics at nearby San Jacinto College for two years.

In 1972, he moved to New York City to complete his formal dance training at the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey ballet schools.

Career

Swayze's first professional appearance was as a dancer for Disney on Parade. He then starred as a replacement playing the role of Danny Zuko in the long-running Broadway production of ''Grease'' before his debut film role as "Ace" in ''Skatetown, U.S.A.''. He appeared as Pvt. Sturgis in the ''M*A*S*H'' episode "Blood Brothers" and had a brief stint in 1982 on a short lived TV series ''The Renegades'' playing a gang leader named Bandit. Swayze became known to the film industry after appearing in ''The Outsiders'' as the older brother of C. Thomas Howell and Rob Lowe. Swayze, Howell, and Howell's friend Darren Dalton reunited in ''Red Dawn'' the next year, and Lowe and Swayze reunited in ''Youngblood''. He was considered a member of the Brat Pack. His first major success was in the 1985 television miniseries ''North and South'', which was set during the American Civil War.

Swayze's breakthrough role came with his performance as dance instructor Johnny Castle in the 1987 film ''Dirty Dancing'', alongside his ''Red Dawn'' co-star, Jennifer Grey. ''Dirty Dancing'', a coming of age story, was a low-budget film that was intended to be shown in theaters for one weekend only and then go straight to video, but it became a surprise hit and achieved massive international success. It was the first film to sell one million copies on video, and as of 2009, it earned over $214 million worldwide and spawned several alternate versions, ranging from a television series to stage productions to a computer game. Swayze received a Golden Globe Award nomination for the role and also sang one of the songs on the soundtrack, "She's Like the Wind", which he had originally co-written with Stacy Widelitz for the film ''Grandview, U.S.A.'' The song became a top ten hit and has been covered by other artists.

After ''Dirty Dancing'', Swayze found himself typecast and appeared in several flops, of which ''Road House'' was the most successful. His biggest hit came in 1990, when he starred in ''Ghost'', with Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. In 1991, he starred alongside ''Youngblood'' cast mate Keanu Reeves in another major action hit, ''Point Break'', and was also chosen by ''People'' magazine as that year's "Sexiest Man Alive".

Swayze was seriously injured in 1998 while filming HBO's ''Letters from a Killer'' near Ione, California when he fell from a horse and hit a tree. Both of his legs were broken and he suffered four detached tendons in his shoulder. Filming was suspended for two months, but the film aired in 1999. Swayze recovered from his injuries, but he had trouble resuming his career until 2000, when he co-starred in ''Waking Up in Reno'', with Billy Bob Thornton and Charlize Theron, and in ''Forever Lulu'', with Melanie Griffith.

In 2001, he appeared in ''Donnie Darko'', where he played a motivational speaker and closet pedophile, and in 2004, he played Allan Quartermain in ''King Solomon's Mines''. He also had a cameo appearance in the ''Dirty Dancing'' sequel, ''Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights'' as an unnamed dance instructor.

Swayze made his West End theatre début in the musical ''Guys and Dolls'' as Nathan Detroit on July 27, 2006, alongside Neil Jerzak, and remained in the role until November 25, 2006. His previous appearances on the Broadway stage had included productions of ''Goodtime Charley'' (1975) and ''Chicago''

Swayze also provided the voice for Cash the country music band dog in ''The Fox and the Hound 2'' and in 2007 starred in the film ''Christmas in Wonderland''. Swayze played an aging rock star in ''Powder Blue'', co-starring his younger brother Don in their first film together. Swayze starred in the A&E; FBI drama ''The Beast'', filmed in Chicago, as FBI Agent Charles Barker.

Personal life

Swayze was married to Lisa Niemi from June 12, 1975, until his death. The couple first met in 1970 when Swayze was 18 years old. Niemi, 14 years old at the time, was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother. Swayze and Niemi had no children. In a 2008 interview, Swayze stated that Niemi was the inspiration for his 1987 hit song, "She's Like the Wind".

As a reaction to his father's death at age 57 from a heart attack in 1982, Swayze began to drink heavily. In 1989, Swayze said, "I've always felt there was something different in there (my personality), but I was scared to look for fear I wouldn't find anything. That's the reason I got into Buddhism, took est training, was into therapy, into Scientology, into Transcendental Meditation. I was trying to support that side of myself. But, you know, in Texas there isn't much support for that part of you." His sister Vicky committed suicide by drug overdose in 1994, leading him to seek treatment for alcoholism. After initial recovery, he temporarily withdrew from show business, retreating to his ranches in California and Las Vegas, New Mexico, to breed Arabian horses. His best-known horse was Tammen, a chestnut Arabian stallion.

Swayze, who was a certified pilot with an instrument rating, made the news on June 1, 2000, while flying with his dogs in his twin-engine Cessna from Van Nuys, California to Las Vegas. His plane developed a pressurization problem, causing Swayze to make a precautionary landing on a dirt road in a housing complex in Prescott Valley. The plane's right wing struck a light pole, but Swayze was unharmed. He locked the cockpit, left the aircraft in the subdivision, and obtained a ride—with his dogs—from a passing vehicle, allegedly in order to telephone the authorities. According to the police report, witnesses said that Swayze appeared to be extremely intoxicated and asked for help to remove evidence—an open bottle of wine and a 30-pack of beer—from the crash site. He made himself unavailable to police for several hours. It was later determined that the alcohol in question was not in the cabin, but stored in external storage compartments inaccessible in flight and that the probable cause of the accident was Swayze's physical impairment due to the cumulative effects of carbon monoxide from engine exhaust by-products, carbon monoxide from heavy tobacco use, and the loss of an undetermined amount of cabin pressurization.

Illness and death

Swayze was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in late January 2008, and underwent chemotherapy and treatment with an experimental drug Vatalanib to cut off the blood supply to the tumor at the Stanford University Medical Center. On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that Swayze "has a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far." Swayze's doctor confirmed that the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but insisted he was not as close to death as reports suggest. Despite repeated tabloid claims that his death was imminent, Swayze continued to actively pursue his career. Specifically, Swayze was diagnosed with a type of pancreatic tumor called intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm.

In early May 2008, it was widely reported in a number of tabloids that Swayze had undergone surgery to remove part of his stomach after the spread of the cancer and that he had rewritten his will, transferring his property to his wife. In a statement made on May 28, Swayze said that he continued to respond well to treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. In late May 2008, he was seen at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, his first public appearance since his diagnosis. In 2008 Swayze was treated with Cyberknife radiotherapy cancer treatment.

In late July 2008, six months after reportedly being given just weeks to live by medical experts, a healthy-appearing Swayze was asked by reporter in Los Angeles airport about this health. He replied, "I'm cooking. I'm a miracle dude. I don't know why".

Swayze appeared on the ABC, NBC, and CBS simulcast of ''Stand Up to Cancer'' in September 2008, to appeal to the general public for donations for the initiative. Swayze said to a standing ovation "I dream that the word 'cure' will no longer be followed by the words 'it's impossible'. Together, we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse". After the show ended, Swayze remained on-stage and talked to other cancer patients; executive producer Laura Ziskin said, "He said a beautiful thing: 'I'm just an individual living with cancer'. That's how he wants to be thought of. He's in a fight, but he's a fighter". In late 2008, Swayze denied claims made by tabloids that the cancer had spread to his liver. Swayze told Barbara Walters in January 2009 that he wanted the media to report that he was "kicking it".

When Barbara Walters asked him if he was using any holistic or alternative methods of treatment besides the chemotherapy, Swayze admitted to using some Chinese herbs, but not much. He then voiced his opposition to the unsupported claims made by proponents of alternative therapies, as noted by ABC News journalist Joseph Brownstein:

: ''Because of the grim prognosis, many patients turn to alternative therapies without scientific evidence behind them. Swayze did not.''

:: "That's one thing I'm not gonna do, is chase, is chase staying alive. I'm not, you know, you'll spend so much time chasing staying alive you won't live, you know? I wanna live. If anybody had that cure out there like so many people swear to me they do, you'd be two things: you'd be very rich, and you'd be very famous. Otherwise, shut up," ''he told Barbara Walters in an interview that aired in January of [2009].''

His last role was the lead in an A&E; TV series, ''The Beast'', which premiered on January 15, 2009. Owing to a prolonged decline in health, Swayze was unable to promote the series, and on June 15, 2009, ''Entertainment Tonight'' reported that the show had been cancelled. In an interview with Barbara Walters which aired in January 2009, Swayze admitted that he had a "tiny little mass" in his liver. On January 9, 2009, Swayze was hospitalized with pneumonia. The pneumonia was said to be a complication of chemotherapy treatments for Swayze's cancer. On January 16, he was released from the hospital to rest at home with his wife. On April 19, 2009, doctors informed Swayze that the cancer had again metastasized to his liver. Swayze stated that his chain smoking probably "had something to do with" the development of his disease. Photos taken of a gaunt Swayze in the months before his death showed him continuing to smoke.

Swayze died "with family at his side" on September 14, 2009, at age 57 (coinicidentally, the same age as his father), 20 months after being diagnosed. Swayze's publicist, Annett Wolf, confirmed to CNN that he had died of pancreatic cancer. He was cremated and his ashes scattered over his New Mexico ranch. He is survived by Lisa Niemi, his wife of 34 years.

Cultural impact

Swayze's name has become a commonly-used term in hip hop songs. Lyrics will use the phrase "...and I'm Swayze," meaning that the speaker has become "like a ghost", meaning he disappeared or is otherwise gone. This is a reference to the title character of Swayze's 1990 film ''Ghost''. It is known to have begun in the early 1990s, by prominent rappers such as EPMD, Black Sheep, CL Smooth, and more recently by such rappers as The Notorious B.I.G. in 2Pac's song ''Runnin' (Dying to Live)'', Method Man, Aesop Rock, and in Mistah F.A.B.'s ''Ghost Ride It''. The expression has become such a hip hop staple that it was even used in the Saturday Night Live hip hop parody, ''Lazy Sunday''.

Jennifer Elise Grey (born March 26, 1960) is an American actress. She first came to prominence in successful films such as the 1984 war film ''Red Dawn'' and the 1986 comedy ''Ferris Bueller's Day Off''. In 1987 she starred as Frances "Baby" Houseman in the hit film ''Dirty Dancing'' for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. In the early 1990s, Grey underwent a much-publicised rhinoplasty procedure.

She became the winner of season 11 of the American version of ''Dancing with the Stars'' in 2010. Grey is the daughter of the Academy Award-winning actor Joel Grey and former actress/singer Jo Wilder.

Early life

Jennifer Grey was born in New York City, the daughter of stage and Academy Award-winning screen actor Joel Grey and former actress/singer Jo Wilder. Grey is the granddaughter of comedian and musician Mickey Katz. She is an alumna of the Dalton School, a private school in Manhattan, and studied both dance and acting.

Career

Grey's commercial debut was at the age of 19, in an ad for Dr Pepper before making her film debut in ''Reckless'' (1984), in a small role. She appeared in a small role in Francis Ford Coppola's ''The Cotton Club'' (1984). That year she starred in the war film ''Red Dawn''. She then appeared in the John Badham project ''American Flyers'' (1985). By this time she had been linked in with the 'so-called' Brat Pack group of actors.

In 1986 she played the role of jealous sister Jeanie Bueller in the John Hughes comedy film ''Ferris Bueller's Day Off'' opposite Matthew Broderick. The film was very financially successful and received a positive critical reception.

The following year, she reunited with Patrick Swayze, whom she had played opposite in Red Dawn, to play Frances "Baby" Houseman in ''Dirty Dancing''. The story is a coming of age drama that documents a teenage girl's rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during the family's summer vacation. It was a low-budget film that was intended to be shown in theaters for one weekend only and then go straight-to-video, but it became a surprise hit and achieved massive worldwide success and is now widely considered a classic. It was the first film to sell one million copies on video. Grey's performance was acclaimed and she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

In the early 1990s, Grey underwent a rhinoplasty procedure that resulted in a nose that caused even close friends to fail to recognize her, and the major change in her appearance negatively affected her career. Of the experience she said, "I went in the operating room a celebrity – and came out anonymous. It was like being in a witness protection program or being invisible." She briefly considered starting over with a new name to go with the new face, but stuck with her original name. In 1999, she reappeared in the short-lived ABC sitcom ''It's Like, You Know...'' portraying herself. In an episode of the series, she poked fun at herself with a storyline about her much-publicized nose job.

Grey also appeared with Shirley MacLaine, Liza Minnelli and Kathy Bates in the CBS television movie ''The West Side Waltz'', adapted by Ernest Thompson from his play, an episode of ''Friends'' as Mindy, and she had a small role in the 2000 film ''Bounce'' with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck. Her sole Broadway theatre credit is ''The Twilight of the Golds'' (1993). On the HBO series ''John from Cincinnati'', Grey portrayed Daphne, Meyer's fiancee. In October she played Abbey, the mother of a sick child in a Season 7 episode of ''House'', ''Unplanned Parenthood''.

Grey was one of the twelve contestants in the eleventh season of ''Dancing With the Stars''. She was partnered with professional dancer Derek Hough. She came out very strong at first, topping the leaderboard very often. However, injuries, stress, and exhaustion took their toll on Grey, and for a couple of weeks she fell behind. In Week 7, however, she improved, tying with previous frontrunner Brandy Norwood. On November 23, 2010, Grey and her partner Hough won the competition.

Personal life

Grey has been romantically involved with Matthew Broderick, Johnny Depp, and George Stephanopoulos. She married actor/director Clark Gregg (''The New Adventures of Old Christine'') on July 21, 2001. They have a daughter Stella, born December 3, 2001. The couple co-starred in the Lifetime movie ''Road to Christmas'' in 2006.

Grey lives in Venice, California, with her family.

In August 1987, Grey suffered severe whiplash in a car accident in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, while vacationing with Matthew Broderick. Two people died in the accident and Broderick was convicted of careless driving and fined $175.

Prior to her 2010 stint on ''Dancing with the Stars'', Grey had a physical examination to ensure that she was fit enough to compete and saw a doctor to address chronic neck problems caused by the car accident years before. Her spinal cord was compressed and her surgeon placed a titanium plate in her neck to stabilize it. He also found a suspicious white spot on her thyroid via MRI. The nodule was cancerous and was removed. Grey has stated she believes the cancer was caught before it metastasized and that she is now cancer-free.
