Hamlet, 1996 Cannes Film Festival Reel
Hamlet, 1996 Cannes Film Festival Reel
In the long, lonnnnnng line of William Shakespeare adaptations, this is one of the most interesting. Kenneth Branagh (who adapted the play to script, directs, and stars) has a pretty good track record with these. Shot in Super Panavison 70 (as of 2012, the last feature shot in 70mm) at the Blenheim Palace and Shepperton Studios, this unabridged telling features a huge and recognizable cast including Richard Attenborough, Julie Christie, Billy Crystal, Judi Dench, Gerard Depardu, John Gielgud, Charlton Heston, Derek Jacobi, Jack Lemmon, Rufus Sewell, Robin Williams, Kate Winslet. It also features a great score by Patrick Doyle. This 12-minute reel was shown at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival basically as a really long trailer. Even though the final title card says 'Coming 1997', the movie actually came out Christmas of 1996 in limited release (at least in the US).
