The Submarines - 1940 (With lyrics)
The Submarines song from the album Honeysuckle weeks. Lyrics to 1940 : Somethings wrong when you regret Things that haven't happened yet But it's a glorious day when morning comes Without the feeling of alarm So rise, and shine Nows the time to be alive To stay awake with me a while, and smile You couldn't sleep for the awful fright That kept you up in bed last But curious shape shift in the dark, They vanish with the sunrise spark So rise, and shine Nows the time to be alive To stay awake with me a while, and smile So rise, and shine Nows the time to be alive To stay awake with me a while So rise, and shine Nows the time to be alive To stay awake with me a while, and smile Somethings wrong. . . .

Coney Island of the 1940's
Coney Island of the 1940's
Coney Island, "the place where merriment is king!" Take a trip back in time 50 years before the Mermaid Parade. See masses of old school New Yorkers beat the heat by hitting the beach. See Side Shows! Carnies! Freaks! Thrill rides! Includes the original Coney Island Hot Dog, the Bathing Girl Review, and people getting sick on rides. Not to mention the Tiger Rag, if 1940's Coney Island existed today an insurance agent would have a field day. Still, 1940's Coney Island kicks the ass of most modern amusement parks any day. (This film is forever dedicated to artist and Coney Island mermaid Mary Karam. She is greatly loved and will be sorely missed. - Sept 19, 2009.) See more at: www.weirdovideo.com

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie"
Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie"
Watch the amazing "Gallopin' Gertie" November 7, 1940 film clip. 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940. The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers. A dramatic tale of failure and success The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

Progressive Education in the 1940s
Progressive Education in the 1940s
This video presents a positive view of progressive education although it begins with a parent complaining that children are not learning the fundamentals. Various educators are seen including famed John Dewey. One skeptic asserts that ideas similar to progressive education caused a collapse of the ancient Greek civilization. Current debates about educational techniques in many respects seem similar to what was occurring in the 1940s.

The 1940's House
The 1940's House
One modern family takes on the challenge of domestic life on Britain's home front in this gritty re-creation of a World War II household, 1940s HOUSE. This time-travel experiment covers the period from the outbreak of the war in 1939 to Victory Day in 1945, compressing six wartime years into nine weeks. The military threat is metaphorical, but the privations are real and the pressure creates surprising tensions nonexistent in modern society. www.shoppbs.org

A National Archives 3:13 minute video short provides a "behind-the-scenes" view of staff preparations for the April 2, 2012, 9 am EST launch of the 1940 census, and gives viewers a tutorial on how to use the data once it is launched. This video is in the public domain and not subject to any copyright restrictions. The National Archives encourages the free distribution of it. The National Archives has launched its new website 1940census.archives.gov in preparation for its first-ever online US census release, which will take place on April 2, 2012, at 9 am (EST). The public is encouraged to bookmark the website now in order to more quickly access the 1940 census data when it goes live. No other website will host the 1940 census data on its April 2, release date. Background on the 1940 Census While the original intent of the census was to determine how many representatives each state was entitled to send to the US Congress, it has become a vital tool for Federal agencies in determining allocation of Federal funds and resources. The census is also a key research tool for sociologists, demographers, historians, political scientists and genealogists. Many of the questions on the 1940 census are the standard ones: name, age, gender, and race, education, and place of birth. But the 1940 census also asks many new questions, some reflecting concerns of the Great Depression. The instructions ask the enumerator to enter a circled x after the name of the person furnishing the <b>...</b>

The Trip, 1940's chevrolet car commercial vivid Technicolour
The Trip, 1940's chevrolet car commercial vivid Technicolour
www.myxboxhacks.com In this 1939 short, a suburban California family gets all dressed up to drive their new 1940 Chevrolet to see grandma and grandpa, who still live on the family farm. Dad's in a suit and tie, and Mom has on a dressy dress and chic hat. Are they dressed up to go see the grandparents or are they dressed up to ride in their new Chevrolet? They pack their expensive looking luggage in the trunk This family has money to spend. When we think of the 1930's and families on the road, we're more likely to think of the old Model T in "The Grapes of Wrath" than of this affluent nuclear family. Is this image pure fantasy, or was America truly coming out of the Depression in 1939? The announcer mentions the car's"utmost economy" but that's not the real message of the ad. The Chevrolet symbolizes comfort (the kids asleep in the back seat), glamour, conspicuous consumption and personal mobility. The farm is another affluent place from what we see of it. Grandma and Grandpa sure don't resemble WPA photographs of dustbowl farmers, although who knows? Americans wanted to put the poverty and deprivation of the 30s behind them and this ad with its conspicuous display of wealth reflects that longing. i will upload videos soon to my upcoming site www.alchemygaming.com

Fantasia 1940 - The Rite of Spring - Part 1: Genesis
The Rite of Spring from Disney's Fantasia. Stravinsky's omonimous score was supposed to be about primitive human rituals, but Disney's animators took a completely different inspiration from it and decided to tell the history of Earth up to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The combination of music and animation is perfect. This first part shows the evolution of Earth before the appearance of life. Please comment and rate. Thanks. Update: No creationism vs evolutionism discussions here. You can say what you think in the "IMVHO" form. In any case, this page is about Fantasia, Disney, Animation, Art and how awesome dinosaurs are.

Katyń 1940 (Ostatni List)
sł.muz. Lech Makowiecki zespół Zayazd Katyn1940(The last letter) -english translation. I'm jotting a few words for You today, Although, I know, You won't receive them again, I'm writing from here to You for the last time, Goodbye My Love- my time has come. I still dream the same dreams at nights, You are the pretty, young lady then, Son must have grown up- hug him from me, Now it's even harder to leave, Now it's even harder to leave. In the moments like this-you really want to live, Everything is meaningless, only to be alive, But the good God gave no choice, Today I'm standing at the end of my road. They ordered us to get off the car- it's here, This birchen forest is my tomb, I'll just sigh for the last time, I'll just think for the last time- I love You...
