A C&NW; GP7??? Leading a stack train?? HOLY COW!!! Nelson, IL. 6/15/1993
I have NO idea what the story is on this! My wife and I where trackside at Woodland Shores IL, when I spotted this coming east, and wonder what the heck is this. A C&NW GP7 4107 running long hood forward of two UP SD's 6348-6233 pulling a stack train at track speed. That's a first for me! Seeing an old Geep leading a stack! The second clip is a UP 6320 and is also east bound at the coaling tower seen in the distance of the first clip, and is at Nelson, IL. Doing some research on the GP7! It was a former Rock Island unit #1202 and renumbered 4432. It was classed as a GP7R after its rebuild by the CRI&P. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5

Metra UP-W Line Cab-Car Ride: C&NW; Power at West Chicago & More!
Metra UP-W Line Cab-Car Ride: C&NW; Power at West Chicago & More!
Riding inbound (eastbound) Metra / Union Pacific- West Line train #510, from West Chicago to Ogilvie Transportation Center (Northwestern Station) in downtown Chicago, as seen from the front vestibule window of the cab-car. Not the whole ride is shown; just these tidbits: First, a surprise just past the West Chicago depot: unpatched, ex-Chicago & North Western Dash-9 #8710 leads a Union Pacific SD70M with an autorack train and some manifest freight tacked on the rear. It's quite rare that a freight these days could be called "CNW 8710 West"! Once this passes, the new signals that replaced the C&NW-style signal bridge between West Chicago and Winfield, along with the now-signalless bridge, can be seen as we hit Metra's track speed before coming to a station stop at Winfield. Next, past Winfield, is a road overpass under construction, just before the old Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (CA&E) electric interurban bridge over what is now UP's triple-track main into Chicago. The bridge carried the CA&E's line to Elgin, which had a branch to Geneva. Just south of this bridge were the CA&E's Wheaton Shops, and its Aurora line, with a branch to Batavia. The CA&E was owned by the same interests that controlled the North Shore Line to Milwaukee, the South Shore Line to South Bend, and many other electric interurban railroads-- unfortunately, the CA&E was the first to go of these, and the South Shore is the only one still in operation today. Thankfully though, the entire CA&E system (except ...

The trip begins in Belle Fourche, operating over 10 mile per hour tracks before reaching 40 miles per hour on ribbon rail south of St. Onge. We see local work being done and experience the ride into Rapid City. Copytright 1994, C. Vision Productions Color/45 Minutes No narration

We are in Monongahela Railway country on the Manor branch in SW Pennsylvania as we watch a Wisconsin Power and Electric train head to the Bailey mine. The exhaust rolls out as the engineer notches the units out, and the GE is sounding especially good, as it gets under way. WEPX trains where handled by CSX, and always had a variety of power that usually always had C&NW in the lash-up somewhere. Video was taken 5/09/1991. Thanks for watching. Final Years of the Union Pacific (CNW) Weber-Mayfair Sub I
Final Years of the Union Pacific (CNW) Weber-Mayfair Sub I
This is probably the only known footage of activity on the Union Pacific's (former Chicago & Northwestern) railroad's "Weber" or "Mayfair Cutoff." The subdivision covered the far north-side of Chicago, Lincolnwood, Skokie and Evanston (Illinois). Footage is from March, 2004. I spent over 15 years getting photos of this line as the customers it served dropped off to the one you see being served in this movie. I wish I had a video camera in the 1990's, 80's and 70's. But this is the best I could do. To learn more about this line and the wonderful people who have helped preserve its history, please visit our group website at finance.groups.yahoo.com There are also two excellent books covering this line--and its sister line known as the Skokie Subdivision--at www.cnwhs.org If you or someone you know has memories, photos or video, about this line or the Skokie Sub, please contact us through the website or enter your comments below.

UP #4026 & CNW #8701 West Line Power Move
Its always a good day to see the Chicago NorthWestern Railroad! Old # 8701 in original colors moving Westward behind UP #4026. As this was originally the very first rail line in the Chicago area, built by the CNWs predecessor, its good to see that there are still a few left. However I wonder if the 8701 was a working locomotive or if the UP was sending her down the line for eventual scrapping. If you know please post. Its also interesting to see the locomotives by themselves without any rolling stock. 7/17/08 Aprox 2:30 PM

C&NW; C425 Slug set.wmv
This model railroad video was made on my 1976-era HO scale model railroad with dubbed in prototype sound. I recorded the sound in Winona, Minnesota in 1977 of an actual C&NW Alco C425 slug set with an RS3 trailing, so the prime mover sounds are correct for the models. Dubbing in the sound was done by playing a sound file and duct taping a head set over the camcorder microphones. This was originally recorded on Digtal-8 tape.
