Robert Charles Krueger (born September 19, 1935), American politician, is a former U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Texas, a former U.S. Ambassador, and a member of the Democratic Party. As of 2011, he is the last Democrat to serve as a Senator from Texas.

Early life

Born in New Braunfels, Texas, Krueger earned a B.A. from Southern Methodist University in 1957 and an M.A. from Duke University in 1958. He went to Merton College, Oxford, earning a D.Phil. in English literature in 1964. He taught English literature as a professor and was later vice provost and Dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. His edition of the poems of Sir John Davies was published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford, in 1975.

Politician

Krueger held business positions as chairman of the board of Comal Hosiery Mills and managing partner of the Krueger Brangus Ranch before entering elective office. Krueger was elected to the 94th and 95th United States Congresses, serving from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1979. Krueger was initially elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent , then the largest congressional district in Texas, stretching from northern San Antonio to Big Bend National Park in far west Texas. Krueger was part of the large "Watergate Class" of 1974, many of whom were Democrats who owed their election to the scandal that brought the resignation of President Richard Nixon three months before the election. Of 92 freshmen elected that year, Krueger was voted "most effective" by his colleagues for his articulate advocacy of causes, particularly a sound national energy policy based upon his knowledge of the oil and gas industry in Texas. Krueger was reelected for a second House term in 1976 along with the election of Jimmy Carter as president, whose term was also marked by the development of an energy policy that included the creation of the Department of Energy as a Cabinet office.

Krueger's success as a congressman representing a large district in an important state led him to challenge incumbent Republican John Tower in 1978 for a U.S. Senate seat from Texas, but Krueger narrowly lost the contest by .3%. On October 23, 1979, the Spanish-fluent Krueger was appointed by President Carter as Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Mexican Affairs at the Department of State and served the remainder of the Carter presidency until February 1, 1981.

Krueger served in several academic lectureship positions at the University of North Texas (then known as North Texas State University), the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, Southern Methodist University and most recently, Texas State University, following his service in federal government. From 1985 to 1989, he also wrote a regular column on a broad range of public affairs issues, which was carried in newspapers in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and Corpus Christi, Texas.

In 1990, Krueger returned to elective office in Texas, serving on the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulated oil and gas as well as the rail system in the state. In his candidacy, Krueger received the most votes of any contested candidate on the primary ballot of either major party and defeated his general election opponent by a 16 percent margin. A forceful advocate for alternative energy and trucking deregulation, Krueger was selected by Governor Ann Richards in 1993 to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lloyd Bentsen, who became Secretary of the Treasury in President Clinton's cabinet. He served from January 21, 1993 until June 14, 1993. Owing to low overall voter turnout (only 8 percent among Democrats) and the relative unpopularity of Clinton in Texas, Krueger lost the June 1993 special election runoff for the remainder of the term ending January 4, 1995 by a 2-to-1 margin to the popular Texas State Treasurer, Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Ambassador

Capitalizing on Krueger's reputation and experience in diplomacy, President Clinton offered Krueger an ambassadorship following his short Senate career. Krueger let it be known he was not interested in "white gloves and chandeliers" but instead wanted to advance democratic interests in a developing country. Clinton thus named Krueger as Ambassador to Burundi, which had been beset with violence in recent preceding years and whose ethnic make-up was the same as that of adjoining Rwanda, whose Hutu and Tutsi tribes had experienced a bloody civil war only months before Krueger began his service in May 1994. His family was initially not allowed to join him in Burundi due to the threat of violence.

As the American emissary in a small country without much strategic voice, Krueger was constantly sought out by Burundi natives to draw attention to human rights abuses in the country, and Krueger did not shy away from expressing concern about those matters to either the Burundi government or the American public back in the United States, including during a ''Nightline'' interview with Ted Koppel. The outspoken Krueger served in Burundi until 1995, when his convoy was ambushed in Cibitoke province. He was traveling on a bare highway in Cibitoke, when gunmen with AK-47s attacked the motorcade, before being diverted by Diplomatic Security Service agents Chris Reilly and Larry Salmon.

In 1996, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Botswana and concurrently Special Representative of the Secretary of State to the Southern African Development Community. He held those posts until 2000, when he became a Visiting Fellow at Merton College, Oxford, and began to write a memoir of his time in central Africa. It was published as ''From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi: Our Embassy Years during Genocide'' by the University of Texas Press in September 2007.

Senator Krueger was also Ambassador at Large and Coordinator for Mexican Affairs, October 23, 1979, to February 1, 1981

Family

Krueger is married to the former Kathleen Tobin of Bandera, Texas, and has 2 daughters, Mariana and Sarah, and a son named Christian. Several years ago, Krueger and his family were the victims of a former employee who stalked them. Their plight led to the passage of anti-stalking legislation in Texas.

Wesley Earl "Wes" Craven (born August 2, 1939) is an American actor, film director, writer, producer, perhaps best known as the director of many horror films, including the famed ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'' and ''Wes Craven's New Nightmare'', featuring the iconic Freddy Krueger character, the ''Scream'' films, alongside ''The Last House on the Left'', ''The Hills Have Eyes'', ''The Serpent and the Rainbow'', ''The People Under the Stairs'', ''Vampire in Brooklyn'', ''Red Eye'', and ''My Soul to Take''.

Early life

Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Caroline (née Miller) and Paul Craven. He had a strict Baptist upbringing. Craven earned an undergraduate degree in English and Psychology from Wheaton College in Illinois, and a masters degree in Philosophy and Writing from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to landing his first job in the film industry as a sound editor for a post-production company in New York, Craven briefly taught English at Westminster College and was a humanities professor at Clarkson College of Technology (now Clarkson University) in Potsdam, New York. He left the academic world for the more lucrative role of pornographic film director. In the documentary Inside Deep Throat, Craven says on camera he made "many X-rated films" under pseudonyms, learning his directing craft. Craven refused to say which films he worked on; this may be due to modesty or because many pornographic films in the 1970s were secretly financed and distributed by the mafia). While his role in Deep Throat is undisclosed, most of his early known work was in writing, film editing or both. In 1972 Wes Craven directed his first feature film The Last House on the Left.

Directing and writing career

Craven's works tend to share a common exploration of the nature of reality. ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'', for example, dealt with the consequences of dreams in real life. ''New Nightmare'' "brushes against" (but does not quite break) the fourth wall by having actress Heather Langenkamp play herself as she is haunted by the villain of the film in which she once starred. At one point in the film, we see on Wes Craven's word processor a script he has written, which includes the exact conversation he just had with Heather — as if the script was being written as the action unfolded. ''The Serpent and the Rainbow'' portrays a man who cannot distinguish between nightmarish visions and reality. In ''Scream'', the characters frequently reference horror films similar to their situations, and at one point Billy Loomis tells his girlfriend that life is just a big movie. This concept was emphasized in the sequels, as copycat stalkers reenact the events of a new film about the Woodsboro killings occurring in ''Scream''. ''Scream'' included a scene mentioning the well-known Richard Gere urban legend. Craven stated in interviews that he received calls from agents telling him that if he left that scene in, he would never work again. He directed ''Scream 4''. Craven was also set to direct ''Beetlejuice'' but dropped out to co-write and executive produce the third outing for Freddy Krueger. The "Elm Street" is located in Potsdam, NY (a small town just south of the Canadian border).

Craven also frequently collaborates with Sean S. Cunningham in his filmography. In Craven's debut feature, ''The Last House on the Left'', Cunningham served as producer. Later, in Craven's most famous film, ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'', Cunningham directed one of the chase scenes, although uncredited. Their infamous characters, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, appeared together in the 2003 slasher film ''Freddy vs. Jason'' with Cunningham acting as producer, while screenwriter Victor Miller is credited as "Character Creator". Later, in ''The Last House on the Left'' remake, both Cunningham and Craven share production credits.

Although known for directing horror/thriller films, he has worked on two that were outside this genre: the 1999 film ''Music of the Heart'', and as one of the 22 directors in the 2006 collaboration ''Paris, je t'aime''.

Craven is currently slated to helm the 3rd film in the Ring series, currently titled The Ring 3D. Recently Craven has signed on to adapt the vampire novel ''Fangland'' taking over from John Carpenter who has recently backed away from the project.

Awards and nominations

During his career, Wes Craven won nine cinematic awards and received three nominations.

In 1977, he won the 'Prize of the International Critics' Jury' in the "Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival" for his film ''The Hills Have Eyes''.

In 1985, his horror film ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'' won the 'Critic's Award' at the "Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival".

In 1992, the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film presented him the Pegasus Audience Award for the thriller ''The People Under the Stairs''. His ''Fantasporto'' won the International Fantasy Film Award for Best Screenplay while the Best Film award went to his film ''Wes Craven's New Nightmare'', the final ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'' film he directed. His ''Shocker'' was also nominated for Best Film in 1990.

The Gérardmer Film Festival granted him the Grand Prize in '97 for ''Scream''.

He was nominated for Best Director for ''Scream'' at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA, in 1997.

In 2006, he was honored at Spike TV's Scream with the Mastermind Award (the tribute was presented to him by Neve Campbell).

Other work

Craven designed the ''Halloween'' 2008 logo for ''Google'', and was the second celebrity personality to take over the YouTube homepage on Halloween.

Craven had a letter published in the July 19, 1968 edition of Life magazine, praising that periodical's coverage of contemporary rock music, in particular Frank Zappa.

Personal life

Craven's first marriage to Bonnie Broecker produced two children, Jonathan Craven (born 1965) and Jessica Craven (born 1968). Jonathan is a writer and director with a few credits to his name. Jessica was a singer/songwriter in the group the Chapin Sisters. The marriage ended in 1970. In 1982, Craven married Millicent Eleanor Meyer. However, the two divorced, according to Joe Eszterhas's book ''American Rhapsody'', after she began an affair with actress Sharon Stone. Also according to the book, on the day the divorce was finalized, Stone sent Craven a dozen black roses. Although Craven has never publicly commented on Meyer's lesbian affair, he has stated in interviews that the marriage dissolved after he discovered it "was no longer anything but a sham." As of 2010, he was married to Iya Lubunka.

Craven is a birder and in 2010 became a member of Audubon California's Board of Directors.

Robert Kenneth Shaye (born March 3, 1939), often referred to as Bob Shaye, is an American businessman, film producer, director and actor.

Biography

Early life

Shaye was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Dorothy and Max Mendel Shaye, a supermarket owner and artist. Robert Shaye is the brother of actress Lin Shaye.

He is a graduate of Detroit's Mumford High School, the University of Michigan and Columbia Law School.

Movie career

Robert Shaye founded New Line Cinema in 1967 and guided the company's growth from a privately held distributor of art films into the entertainment industry’s top independent motion picture production and distribution company.

It was while working at the Museum of Modern Art that Shaye first began to explore the world of distribution. In 1967, he formed New Line Cinema in his Greenwich Village apartment. Starting with a package of feature films and shorts rented to colleges and building on early re-releases such as Reefer Madness and first-run domestic distribution of foreign films, New Line broke out commercially with such popular franchises as the Street Fighter series, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and A Nightmare on Elm Street series. Those successful franchises set the stage for a string of New Line hits including Rush Hour, Austin Powers, Mask, Dumb & Dumber, The Wedding Singer, Seven, Boogie Nights, and Blade.

In 1998, when writer/director Peter Jackson brought his 25-minute pitch reel for a big screen epic of J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings to New Line, hoping to turn the three volumes into two films. Shaye suggested Jackson make three films and greenlit an unprecedented simultaneous production for all three installments. Combined, The Lord of the Rings trilogy was nominated for 30 Oscars, winning 17, including a clean sweep of 11 awards for The Return of the King, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. At the box office, all three films are among the top 10 grossing films of all time, earning a combined total of nearly $3 billion worldwide. This capped a very long list of films over many years including, Elf, Freddy vs. Jason, Final Destination series, Wedding Crashers, Monster-in-Law, The Notebook, Hairspray; Oscar-nominated A History of Violence. In total, Shaye to date, has overseen the production or distribution of more than 500 feature films.

Shaye has produced and directed two feature films: 1991’s Book of Love based on the novel “Jack in the Box” by William Kotzwinkle, and the sci-fi adventure The Last Mimzy, in 2007, based on Lewis Padgett’s short story “Mimzy Were the Borogroves”.

In June 2008, Shaye and his longtime partner at New Line, Michael Lynne, formed a new independent film company, Unique Features. He currently has in development with Lynne 15 feature film projects. Among them: PlayStation 3 game Heavy Rain; “The Mortal Instruments," trilogy based on the supernatural New York Times bestselling young-adult fantasy series by Cassandra Clare; film adaption of the Maggie Stiefvater novel “Shiver”; as well as Paul McCartney’s “High in the Clouds,” with original music by McCartney; an untitled feature film about the inspirational story of famed NFL linebacker Bart Scott; a thriller script Cradle Will Fall by Jack Olsen at Screen Gems and the action-adventure Arabian Knights at Warners Bros.

Shaye earned his degree in business administration from the University of Michigan and his J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a member of the New York State Bar, and he has served on the Board of Trustees for the Neuroscience Institute, Motion Picture Pioneers, the American Film Institute and the Legal Aid Society.

Douglas William "Doug" Bradley (born 7 September 1954) is an English actor best known for his roles in the ''Hellraiser'' film series.

Early life

Bradley was born in Liverpool, England. He attended Quarry Bank High School.

Career

He is well known for playing the role of the Cenobite Pinhead in eight ''Hellraiser'' films (the only exception being the barely produced and unavailable Hellraiser: Revelations), as well as the character of Captain Elliot Spencer in two of the films ''Hellbound: Hellraiser II'' (1988) and ''Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth'' (1992). He is one of only five actors to play the same horror character at least six consecutive times, the others being Sir Christopher Lee who portrayed Count Dracula at least seven consecutive times, Robert Englund who portrayed Freddy Krueger eight consecutive times, Warwick Davis who portrayed the Leprechaun (Leprechaun series) six consecutive times and Tobin Bell who portrayed Jigsaw in all seven ''Saw'' films.

Bradley has appeared in an advertisement for direct line insurance in the UK (as a gym teacher) appearing on everything from T.V, the backs of buses, in tube stations and internet advertisement. He has performed narrations on several songs by Cradle of Filth, an English extreme metal band. The first was 2000s "Her Ghost in the Fog" (as well as "Death Magick For Adepts" and "Tortured Soul Asylum"), however he could not appear in the music video and was replaced by actor David McEwen who would play the character of Kemper in ''Cradle of Fear''. Bradley also appeared on its sequel - "Swansong For A Raven" (as well as the album intro "Satyriasis"). In 2006, he lent his narrations to "Rise of the Pentagram" and "Tonight In Flames". Continuing in this vein, Bradley has contributed guest vocals to Cradle of Filth's 2008 album, ''Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder'', on most songs excluding "Tragic Kingdom". He seems to be playing the role of Gilles de Rais, the person on which the album's concept is based.

Bradley has appeared in a lot of horror shorts including "Red Lines" and "On Edge". He is also a member of UK animation company Renga Media, makers of the independent British CGI ''Dominator'' movies and shorts, dividing job roles between producer and voice actor. He also voiced the Loc-Nar in the short animated crossover ''Heavy Metal vs. Dominator'', in which characters from the Dominator universe meet and fight with characters from the film Heavy Metal 2000.

Due to his eventual skill at application and removal of the Pinhead appliances, he has been credited in some of the Hellraiser films as an assistant make-up artist named Bill Bradley, using his middle name. 2008 brought his welcome return to the Clive Barker cinematic universe by way of a featured appearance in ''Book of Blood''. He also did a small guest star appearance in the 2008 black comic horror "the Cottage". In 2010 he stars also in the British/Spanish horror film ''Exorcismus'' and in March 2010 joined Shaun Robert Smith's Nazi Zombie horror ''The 4th Reich''. 2011 sees him starring as "The Doctor" in British film noir ''Jack Falls''.

On June 14, 2011 it was announced that Doug would be doing a voiceover for the film ''Lucifer's Unholy Desire'', an independent film written and directed by Cody Knotts. Doug said he was "intrigued in this concept of appearing in a film but not appearing in the film."

Personal life

Bradley lives in London with his wife, Lynne, a son and a daughter, and a cat. He is a longtime close friend of horror/fantasy novelist Clive Barker, the two having met when they attended secondary school, and has worked with Barker in various capacities (from a theatre group to the ''Hellraiser'' films) since the early 1970s. He is also a die hard Everton FC supporter.

Bradley is also the author of an autobiography, as well as a volume Sacred Masks: Behind the Mask of the Horror Actor which explores the history of masks in society, and their applications in Horror Movies.
