Robert Barton Englund (born June 6, 1947) is an American actor, voice-actor, singer, and director, best known for playing the fictional serial killer Freddy Krueger, in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors in 1987 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988. Englund is a classically trained actor.^[1]

Early life[link]

Englund was born in Glendale, California on June 6, 1947, the son of Janis (née MacDonald) and John Kent Englund, an aeronautics engineer who helped develop the Lockheed U-2 aircraft.^[2][3][4] He is of part Swedish ancestry, and can speak Swedish fairly well.^[5] Englund began studying acting at the age of twelve in a children's theater program at California State University, Northridge.^[6] While he was in high school, he attended the Cranbrook Theatre School (organized by the Cranbrook Educational Community) in Bloomfield Hills. He then attended California State University for three years before transferring to Michigan's Oakland University, where he trained at the Meadow Brook Theatre,^[2] at the time a branch of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.^[1]

Wanting a feature film debut, Englund auditioned for the part of Luke Skywalker in the 1977 film Star Wars. After failing to get the part, Englund suggested that a friend, Mark Hamill, try out instead, for which in turn Hamill became famous. Englund's first film wound up being Eaten Alive, ironically in that same year. Since then, Englund has made over 100 appearances on film and television. His early film roles usually typed him as a nerd or a redneck, and he first gained attention in the role of Willie, the lovably innocent alien in the 1983 miniseries V, as well as the 1984 sequel V: The Final Battle, and V: The Series.

Englund played the psychotic burn victim and child murderer Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven's 1984 hugely successful A Nightmare on Elm Street. This role rose him to nationally syndicated fame, and Englund became the first new horror movie star since Sir Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in the 1960s. His association with the genre led him to top-billed roles in The Phantom of the Opera (1989), The Mangler (1995), and 2001 Maniacs (2005).^[7]

Englund is one of only two actors to play a horror character eight consecutive times, the other being Doug Bradley, who portrayed the Pinhead character eight times in the Hellraiser film series. Englund has said that he enjoys the role of Freddy as it gives him a break from always playing the nice guy; indeed, many people who have worked with Englund attest to his congeniality. Makeup artists responsible for the Krueger makeup have commented that Englund was so friendly and talkative that it made the lengthy makeup application slightly more challenging.

Englund's TV appearances include starring in the short-lived series Nightmare Cafe (1992), in which he played Blackie, the mysterious proprietor of the title cafe, and reprising his role of "Freddy Krueger" in the series Freddy's Nightmares. His guest spots include the science fiction series Babylon 5, one episode of the show MacGyver as Tim Wexler, Masters of Horror, MadTV, Sliders, and Knight Rider, where he played a phantom haunting a film studio and Walking Tall: The Series as well as a guest star spot on the hit TV show Walker Texas Ranger. His work in voice-over animation includes magician Felix Faust in Justice League, The Riddler on The Batman and The Vulture on The Spectacular Spider-Man, and as Dormammu on The Super Hero Squad Show. On the TV witch drama Charmed (Episode: "Size Matters"), he played a demon who used the services of a lackey to lure people into a decrepit household (where he lived in the walls) and shrank them down to action figure size. He also appeared on an episode of Married... with Children as The Devil. He appeared most recently in one episode of the 2010 season of the television spy spoof Chuck, as a scientist who created a fear-inducing nerve toxin.

Englund performed as host of the Horror Hall of Fame awards show three times from 1989-1991.

Englund made his directorial début with the 1988 horror film 976-EVIL. His second feature, Killer Pad, was released direct-to-DVD in 2008. He is currently in pre-production to direct The Vij, about a young priest who is led by an evil genie to commit murder, and who falls in love with an old witch who is not what she seems.

His memoir, Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams with coauthor Alan Goldsher, was published by Pocket Books on October 13, 2009.

Recently he had starred in the web series "Fear Clinic",^[8] where he played in five episodes as Dr. Andover.^[9]

Englund recently noted he would welcome a guest appearance in the ABC revival of V in an interview with Todd Sokolove from Forces of Geek.^[10]

In January 2010, it was announced that he will return as Jackson Roth for the sequel to Dee Snider's Strangeland, Strangeland II: Disciple.^[11] However as of December 2010 no specefic dates or plans have been made regarding the project.

Englund had a guest appearance in the Slasher episode of Bones,^[12] portraying a quirky janitor at protagonist Dr. Temperance Brennan’s old high school.^[13] His character, a friend of Brennan's, and situation were introduced as "very creepy... it's like Freddy creepy." Englund was a special guest at the 2010 Streamy Awards.^[14] He is a special guest of the CA Weekend of Horrors on 8 October 2010.^[15] Englund appeared on the Creation Entertainment Weekend of Horrors in May 2010.^[16] In May 2010 he was cast for the American indie thriller Inkubus.^[17] Englund appeared as himself in the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies map, "Call of the Dead" as one of the playable characters. He will also play the part of a Halloween themed serial killer in Hawaii Five-0.

In December 2011 Englund stated in an interview that he no longer wished to work on Freddy Krueger and currently has no desire to portray the character in any capacity, however he also stated that he's a strong believer in the phrase "Never Say Never" and that we have not seen the last of Freddy Krueger.^{[citation needed]}

Marriages and family[link]

Englund has been married three times, but has had no children in any of the marriages. The first of these was during his college years, the second was to actress Roxanne Rogers, whom he gave a small part in his first directoral film, 976-EVIL. His third and current marriage is to prop designer and make-up artist Nancy Booth Englund. Englund has stated that Nancy is the love of his life and they have been married since 1988. Englund is the ex-brother-in-law of Sam Shepard and Sandy Rogers.^[18]

Englund is 5' 9" (175 cm). Englund is a fan of the animated television series King of the Hill, enjoys surfing, and continuously watches horror films. He has written an autobiography, Hollywood Monster, and has stated in the book that A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child is his least favorite Nightmare movie. Englund ad-libbed the famous line "Welcome to prime time, bitch!" in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Despite the villainous roles he plays, Englund is thought of as a very nice man who loves his fans. He continuously does interviews and attends horror conventions. Englund loves to do photos and autographs for his fans. He lives in Laguna Beach, California with his wife Nancy and a house full of pets.^[18]

David Winning (born May 8, 1961) is a Canadian and American dual Citizen film and television director, screenwriter, producer, editor, and occasional actor. Although Winning has worked in numerous film and TV genres, his name is most commonly associated with science fiction, thrillers and drama.

Biography[link]

Winning was born in Calgary, Alberta. He became a dual citizen of the US and Canada in 2003 and lives in Los Angeles. He was making films at age ten with a Super 8 camera. In 1979, he received a Canada Council grant to make the sixteen millimeter drama Sequence,^[1] and expanded the plotline into his first feature film Storm, filmed in the summer of 1983 in Bragg Creek, Alberta. It took four years to finish and was released by Golan-Globus' Cannon Films International and Warner Home Video in 1988. A December 11, 1989 LA Times review called the film “taut, ambitious and darkly comic”.^[2]

At 27, he directed episodes of Friday the 13th: The Series for Paramount and received three Gemini Award nominations.^[3] His second feature Killer Image followed in 1992; the mystery-thriller starred Michael Ironside and M. Emmet Walsh. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s he directed 14 movies and episodes of twenty-three series, including Stargate: Atlantis,^[4] ABC's Dinotopia filmed in Budapest, Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and four seasons on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.^[5] He directed Kim Cattrall, Sean Young, and Eric McCormack in the award-winning thriller Exception to the Rule. His biggest budget studio movie to date is the $29-million kids sci-fi action sequel Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie for 20th Century Fox.^[6] He directed seven episodes of the Cannell police series Street Justice with Carl Weathers.^[7] Winning said “Episodic TV gets no respect” in a March 2000 Toronto Star interview.^[8] He directed a 16-year-old Ryan Gosling in the Pilot and seven episodes of the Paramount UPN kid series Breaker High.

According to the February 2010 Avatar issue of Sci Fi Magazine, he was slated to direct the movie Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage with Patrick Stewart.^[9] He is directing episodes of Space Channel's hit comedy/horror series Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and Lost Girl^[10] for SYFY Channel and Showcase -- and supervised and directed the far north webisode series YUKONIC online in 2011.

Winning has won twenty-two first place Golds/Platinums since 1994 at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.^[11] He won the 1995 Gold Hugo Award and two Silver Plaques from the Chicago International Film Festival, and four national Gemini Award nominations for Best Director/Dramatic Series.^[12] In 2002 he accepted the first national team award from the Directors Guild of Canada Best TV series Drama for Twice in a Lifetime and was nominated again in 2006.^[13] His episode of Stargate: Atlantis “Childhood’s End” won three awards for Directing; New York, Houston and Chicago in 2005. In April 2008, Winning won 2 Directing awards at the Houston Film Festival/WorldFest in Texas and a Special Jury Award for his work on the Lifetime Television vampire series Blood Ties.

2008 Hawaii Career Award & Festival screenings[link]

Winning was honored at the 2008 Big Island Film Festival in Hawaii.^[14] He received a Special Career award on May 17, 2008 with a reception in his honor in Waikōloa Village. Swamp Devil also won the Golden Honu for Best Foreign feature film. A doublebill of his two monster movies was presented at the outdoor festival; Swamp Devil starring Bruce Dern and Black Swarm starring Robert Englund. The first in his trilogy was Something Beneath with Kevin Sorbo in 2007. Black Swarm also screened at the Boston Film Festival on Friday the 13th of June, 2008. Both films were produced in Montréal by Muse Entertainment for the SYFY Channel, New York.

Ken Kirzinger (born November 4, 1959) is a Canadian stuntman and actor best known for his portrayal of Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and of Pa in Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007). He also played "Mason" Jason Voorhees character spoof in the horror film parody, Stan Helsing.

Role as Jason Voorhees[link]

At 6 ft 5 ¹⁄₂ in (1.97 m) he is one of the tallest men to have played Jason Voorhees. Freddy vs. Jason director Ronny Yu tried to limit Kirzinger's stunts on the film as much as possible. Stuntman Glenn Ennis was called in to perform a series of stunts, including a stunt showing Jason walking through a field killing teenagers while on fire.

Early career[link]

Long before Kirzinger took over the role of Jason Voorhees from Kane Hodder, he had ties to Friday the 13th. He appeared in 1989's Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan as a New York cook who gets in Jason's way while pursuing Rennie Wickham (Jensen Daggett) and Sean Robertson (Scott Reeves). Jason, played by Kane Hodder, threw Kirzinger over the counter. In addition to his role as the cook, Kirzinger also served as a stunt coordinator for the film. Kirzinger is the only second person besides Hodder to play Jason more than once as he doubled for the latter in the same movie in a few short scences.

According to Kirzinger, the hardest thing he went through for performing as Jason in Freddy vs. Jason (2003), was sinking into the lake. They shot the scene in a tank which was highly chlorinated and had debris to make it look like lake water. Director Ronny Yu wanted the close-up of Ken's eye and wanted him to sink into the water keeping his eye open. Then also he cannot breathe because it would be visible on film. He was lying on top of the water and had to let himself sink down to the bottom of the tank without breathing keeping his eye open. Kirzinger really held his breath, and the chlorine in the water burned his eyes.

His brother Dave Kirzinger played for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League from 1978 to 1986. His known friends are Robert Englund, who co-starred with him in Freddy vs Jason as Freddy Krueger, and Kane Hodder, the actor who played Jason Voorhees before him. Even though Hodder will sometimes state his disappointment at not being chosen to play Jason for the fifth time in Freddy vs. Jason, he and Kirzinger are very good friends and Kirzinger stated they enjoy seeing each other at conventions.
