This is the motion proposed by Cllr. Michael Colreavy, seconded by Cllr Martin Kenny and passed unanimously by Leitrim County Council
at meeting on Monday
last 1 st Nov
2010. The motion will be sent by Council executive to Dept of an Taoiseach.
Motion:
Leitrim County Council urges the Irish
Government to request the
United States authorities withdraw
their extradition warrant against Seán
Garland, former President of the Workers Party of Ireland. The warrant
against
Mr Garland was issued by Condolezza Rice in the last days of the
Bush administration, indicting him for alleged conspiracy
with North Korea
to counterfeit hundred dollar bills.
No evidence has been presented to
support the extradition warrant and independent analysts have conclusively
demonstrated
the notes in question could only be manufactured in the United
States, not in Korea
as alleged. Mr Garland is a 76 year man in poor health
suffering from angina and diabetes and has been diagnosed with
cancer. The
campaign against his extradition has already received widespread cross-party
support throughout Ireland,
Europe and further afield, as well as trade
unions and significant figures in culture, arts, and
academia. This is the
only way we can ensure Seán Garland’s constitutional rights as an Irish
citizen are protected.
