THE DREAM IN THE NEXT BODY

The poems in The Dream in the Next Body trace the details that bring the speaker to the moments of witness or loss that break open the ordinary surface of the world. Here are poems about love, about war, about 'the subtle map of the bed'. In them, momentary intimacies rear up from stillness.

Watching a film about Muslim boys, the speaker reveals 'I want to slow them down learn/what voluminous anguish they have pitted their certainties against.' In 'Witness' a woman observes what men offer each other through the things they do not say, 'silence to lean their bodies against'.

Or what they lose. On an international telephone call with her mother I 'The Call', the speaker confesses 'I make her leave me/so I can be still'. The poems probe the unsaid and its ripples between words, between people, between bodies.

The poems also deal with the visible and its shadows. Retracing her steps to find something lost, the speaker realizes she has been given the chance to see again. In 'Nothing Else' we view the gift of a perfect bowl from three perspectives.

A HUNDRED SILENCES

A hundred silences, Gabeba's third collection, explores the intimate terrain of love and loss, of beginnings and 'the beginning of leaving'. A speaker sees in 'the piles of things to give away' the sign of her father's death. A meditation on the house the speaker's grandfather built, one poem shows that 'the landscape is passing into language'. A hundred silences can be found at all good bookshops in South Africa, and is part of Homebru at Exclusive Books. A hundred silences is also available online at www.kalahari.net and www.exclusivebooks.com.
