    North Korea’s ever-growing belligerence, illustrated by its vow to retaliate against the South for artillery drills and the recent attacks on Yeonpyeong Island, highlights the need to further strengthen the U.S.-South Korea alliance.  South Korea must also play a greater role in regional stability and prosperity, according to a report released today by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).

  • ‘Natural Security’ Comes Into Focus for Global Security Community

    This past weekend brought a range of news regarding natural resources and security: the culmination of the Cancun climate change talks; reports that Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai signed an important natural gas pipeline deal; and a New York Times feature article on how the U.S. security community is concerned that the effects of climate change, competition for strategic minerals, and other resource challenges may increase potential for conflict. Indeed, the importance of natural security has come into focus for the global security community.

  • Bob Woodward

    Bob Woodward (born March 26, 1943) is regarded as one of America’s preeminent investigative reporters and non-fiction authors. He has worked for The Washington Post since 1971 as a reporter, and is currently an associate editor of the Post.  While a young reporter for The Washington Post in 1972, Woodward was teamed up with Carl Bernstein;  the two did much, but not all, of the original news reporting on the Watergate scandal that led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. Gene Roberts, former managing editor of The New York Times has called the work of Woodward and Bernstein “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.”

    On December 14, 2010, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) will launch its latest Afghanistan report, Responsible Transition, in an event at the Newseum featuring a discussion with the report's authors, moderated by Bob Woodward. Woodward, a renowned investigative journalist and author of Obama's Wars, will interview report coauthors David Barno and Andrew Exum on their recommended strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Exum, having just returned from Afghanistan, will also provide an on-the-ground update.

Expert Highlight

  • General Barno, a highly decorated military officer with over 30 years of service, has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States and around the world, to include command at every level. He served many of his early years in special operations forces with Army Ranger battalions, to include combat in both the Grenada and Panama invasions.  In 2003, he was selected to establish a new three-star operational headquarters in Afghanistan and take command of the 20,000 U.S. and Coalition Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom.  For 19 months in this position, he was responsible for the overall military leadership of this complex political-military mission, devising a highly innovative counterinsurgency strategy in close partnership with the U.S. embassy and coalition allies.
