I voted too, though I was tempted to cast my vote for either Colin Farrell or Liam Neeson---I did not.

Meself, KK and Mick O'Brien came up with the list after the Sin é Annual Christmas night out, thats held 3 times a year in different locations for various reasons..Mick fought very hard to get Roundy Mooney from Kildare on the list, plus he wanted his barber to get a look in too..., and it got fierce altogether when KK demanded Lugs Brannigan got put on the list as well, and also the key holder to the vault to KK's mega collection to be put on show soon....I went looking for clearance for Granny Smith to see if she was Irish, becauce if it wasnt for that bright Dame, an apple tart may never had been set down on a cake cooler in Ma Flynns kitchen, and that started a long time devotion that carries to this day...and me arguement the O'Bama was an Offaly laddy got guffawed outta the room...ah lads....So we picked the dudes on the list above here, to let us all make up our minds..I now who I picked..wasnt easy mind..Happy Voting.."Ya wont forget me now, will ya"

I don't have much liking for such contests, but will say that I was very
pleased when a nationwide poll in Canada here selected Tommy Douglas
as the greatest Canadian. Tommy was a socialist rebel of the finest order,
founder of the CCF (later NDP). He spent a New Year's Eve at our house
when I was seven or eight years old. He's the one who brought electricity
to all the farms of Saskatchewan, as he promised he would. Later, in
federal politics, he managed to bring universal medicare to all of us,
regardless of financial status, even though his party was third in the polls.
As for the small number of women, it's more a commentary on how we've
buried the nurturing goddess realm beneath the conquering gods, is it
not? I think of Tillie Olson's book, "Silences," which tells of so many
talented women whose gifts were given no outlet in arts or other public
endeavours because their gifts were muted by long hours of labour and
devotion to family, whose generosity and wisdom were not honoured
or respected. That Christy sings of the stitching up of the drunken
husband and the burning times, and includes songs by Natalie Merchant
and Joni Mitchell in his repertoire, is evidence of a kind of consciousness
that will, in time, encourage those silenced to speak... though I have
noticed that the Rose of Tralee passed that barrier long ago. With her,
it's less a question of overcoming obstacles and more one of speaking
slowly enough so that even simple troubadours can understand...
